This is a fantastic field.
In lane four, Donovan Brazier.
The guy who had the American record before this guy, Bryce Hoppel, was Donovan Brazier, the world champion in 2019, but he's coming back from injury.
Had a great comeback last year, but so far this year it's been very up and down, as we look at, at the guy who has the American record, Sonia, in Bryce Hoppel.
Yeah, he's been on six of the last global outdoor championship teams, dating back to 2019.
Will his American record go down tonight?
There's Brandon Miller.
Brandon starts in lane three.
Had a win in LA recently.
He's in good form.
Yeah, he's having a good 2026, and he had a good 2025 as well, second in the 800 at the 2025 US Indoor Championships.
We saw him win in LA in both May and June.
He's gonna be tested today, though.
We've been waiting for this.
The men's 800 is away.
I was walking around the stadium before the races started, and I heard people, the young people talking about this young man.
A lot of people showed up tonight- Yep to see this race.
And he's on the left-hand side there, just tucking in behind the pacer, the youngster from Justin, Texas.
So remember, this is an American record attempt here by young Cooper Lutkenhaus, and that's what the pace lights are dialed into.
And the pacer is expected to go out in just over 49 seconds.
So far, a little bit of a gap between the pacer, Lee, and second place, Cooper Lutkenhaus.
And Yusuf Bizimana of Great Britain is tucked in there just ahead of Bryce Hoppel.
Well, the pacer's done his job.
Yep.
Kind of.
There's Donovan Brazier.
He's a few positions back on the rail.
Yeah, I think the record chances have kind of gone because nobody really wanted to follow the pacer.
They're closer to 50 seconds than 49, but we know Cooper can finish.
The question is, how fast is he gonna run here?
That's what I was gonna say.
You can never count this young man out.
When we think about how he has competed, especially on this track just two years ago, you can't put anything past him.
It was 49.9 on the split.
What does he have left in the tank?
The third 200 we know is where you gotta have guts and courage.
So far, he's looking really good.
Here comes Brandon Miller.
Wow.
Look at Miller around the outside of Lutkenhaus.
That's a very decisive move.
Wow.
But when you make that kind of move, you gotta be able to withstand the 17-year-old's kick, and here comes the kick.
Remember, Sonia said where he is strongest, but it's Brandon Miller who's gonna cause the upset.
Wow.
Oh, yes, indeed, he is.
Brandon Miller, when he put his foot down, he just took off and did not look back.
We told you before the gun went off he's been in good form.
How about that?
And that's a look of I know you guys are all excited about the youngster, but I'm here too.
What a great race by Brandon Miller.
Brandon Miller has been in the mix for a long time, one of America's best.
At 24 years old now, he said, "Look, 17-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus, you're gonna have to settle for second today."
What a move.
You said it, Ato.
When you make that move, you gotta know you have a lot left in the tank, and he knew he had it.
What a perfectly timed move to upset the youngster, which this is great experience for Luker- Yes for, for Cooper, for him to run races like this, to know it's not always gonna be great.
There goes- Donovan Brazier Donovan Brazier coming up here for third.
What a great finish for him as well.
Look at Brandon Miller's form coming home.
That's the key right there.
It's one See how those arms are coming up?
See how those knees are coming up?
It was a decisive move.
He timed it perfectly.
And Cooper Lutkenhaus looked over as if to say, "Oh, wait, you have another gear?
I gotta find my last gear."
It wasn't there, so Cooper Lutkenhaus will leave his first loss of 2026, comes here at the Prefontaine Classic.
And that's why Brandon Miller was so pumped.
He hears the noise.
He hears the talk all about this guy.
Well, he just said, "How about me?"
No better place.
And great finish-
