Uh , I wanna get thoughts on some controversy, some minor, some major controversies.

Uh, the latest on the Kittel Marte.

Situation taking Robert and Nick's temperature.

Again, the Dodgers investigation, Jeff Passan finally comes out with what everyone was waiting for, and then he got yelled at for not doing journalism fast enough, but I wanna talk to you guys and see how you're distilling that and finally, the deeper dive.

Uh, new Padres ownership, we are here, plus the AL Central, getting a little shifty.

I wanna get everyone's, uh, thoughts on that as well, plus the notebook, plus anything Nick's working on.

Uh, the comments already asking any update on Marte, of course, we will dive into that in a little bit.

I wanna start with new Padres ownership cause Robert, this is, uh, a team that you're backing significantly this year.

Every time we've talked about it.

He said, hey, greatest threat to the Dodgers in the NL, I gotta go with the Padres.

Uh, this is more of a long-term forecast, but they, you know, had their introductory press conference this week.

I took the temperature of some people in the office to see, hey, do you find this cringe or do you find this, you know, incredibly enthusiastic?

I thought it was fun, uh, but your thoughts on, uh, how this, you know, what this might mean moving forward, does this change the equation for you at all when it comes to baseball in San Diego and the investment that might come into baseball in San Diego?

No, I, I initially left that thinking, OK, they got people who now own the Padres who genuinely care and who want to compete.

And I thought their, their enthusiasm was super cool.

I also thought it was super unique that they ended up taking a picture of the media while they're doing their introductory press conference, which I don't know if that's happened in, in ownership history of them taking a picture during a press conference like that, but Absolutely love it.

And my feeling ever since the sale was reported, and now that it's official, is that um the Padres, I would not be surprised if there's more meaningful money that's going back into this roster.

We've seen them spend under Peter Sidler, especially when he was still alive, they were spending a lot of money.

They were acting like a big market team that slowed significantly, and I, I bet that if, if The ownership situation was fixed in recent years.

I think their free agency might have looked a little bit different, but alas, um, they now have the new ownership, and I think it's going to be a very good thing.

And if I was that ownership, I would keep AJ Preller, I would have him be the guy that's running that.

ization leading that front office because if Preller, I, I don't know, I don't know what is, what's gonna end up happening from the situation here.

Um, I don't know if it's gonna lead to any uncertainty with his job, but what I do know is that he's extremely good at it and that they should keep him.

And I know he's got that new extension in place, but, yeah, they, they need, they need to keep him in place there.

But I, so far, super encouraged by what I heard and what I saw from them for sure.

Now , Nick, Roberts has been a believer, not just in the long term, but this year, in, in previous shows we've mentioned, uh, we're we're doing, like, 3 weeks now of, hey, the Dodgers seem pretty gettable, meanwhile, they go on another, like, 7-game plus winning streak and they've made that take look a little bit like a dinosaur take, but, uh, your thoughts on the potential of the Padres to make things interesting for the Dodgers, not in the long-term future, but this year.

Do, do they have a real shot if they match up in October?

Yeah, absolutely.

I think uh potential definitely for the Padres to, to give the Dodgers some problems in the, in the playoffs.

I still view the Brewers as the Dodgers' biggest.

adversary in October.

We just saw them play in Dodger Stadium.

The Brewers looked great, won 3 out of 4, but the Padres, I mean, their biggest issue this season in the first half was the offense was terrible and the guys that they're really counting on to carry the load just were not there, and they flipped the switch at the perfect time.

They've been one of the best offenses in baseball in the last month or two.

Um, Fernando Tatis, of course, has been, you know, the headline there.

Infamously did not hit a home run until May 30th.

Since that, since he hit that home run, he is second among all hitters in the war behind.

Mr. Pico Armstrong, which, you know, he's lapping the field, but, you know, Tatis and Merrill coming on is really what's, what's fueled this turnaround for the Padres.

But I think where they fall short in, is in the running for Dodgers' biggest challenge in October is that pitching staff.

You know, they, they added to the deadline, Casey M and Robbie Ray.

They haven't looked great.

I, I don't see a ton of Impact starters, and I know it's October.

Shortened playoff series, it's a little different.

They have an excellent bullpen, but having a starting pitching staff that can at least keep you in the game for the 1st 4 innings, that's a, that's, you're really rolling the dice each time out from my view.

Obviously, things could change between now and then, but I still think the Brewers are the, the number 1 adversary for, for the Dodgers in the playoffs.

Yeah, I, I am struggling to find pitching on the vast majority of these playoff teams, and, and that goes for the American League, you know, certainly, every time I try to forecast an offense, um, it seems like they're all mismatched, like, the Yankees' pitching staff, incredible, the offense middling essentially every single day, they can't lose a step on the pitching staff, but you're gonna, cause, of course, you are, cause you're gonna lose a step from perfection, but if you lose a step from perfection, they can't hit, um.

Um, you know, the, the Red Sox have been playing above anyone's heads for months now.

Will it continue into October?

I mean, they have the pitching staff to match, right now, they have the offense to match.

Uh, in the AL Central, uh, and, you know, I got a question here, asking if I'm going to Yankee Stadium this weekend for Sox, Yanks.

I would rather drink a glass of, you know, metallic balls than go watch the Yankees play the Red Sox in person.

I would never do that, uh, but I appreciate the question.

Uh, I don't think I've been.

That'd be the first metallic balls drop in the podcast history, I think.

I would pop on on Monday morning with a big coffee mug full of, like, uh, yeah, I don't know what they're silver, little silver balls, and I would chug solids and I would, yeah, that's what would happen.

Um, I, I don't think I've gone to a Yankee Sox game since, like, 2002, but, um, yeah, more if that's something you like.

Uh, yeah, no, the crowd's nasty and I end up angry and stressed out the whole time.

Um.

Sounds fun.

But we are still on, but, yeah, I gotta pivot away from that, it's literally impossible.

Um, we are still in a situation where the comments are saying, nice, nice, yeah, great.

Good job.

Um, very cool.

I, at my, uh, tangent, just I guess we'll have it, yeah, I'm in Dog Days of Baseball Insiders.

I gave my groomsman at my wedding a bunch of baseball cards and um we were opening them in the hotel suite before getting photographed and the, the person, you know, the person who was.

Organizing a whole event, came in and saw our wedding planner and saw us and, and someone else just said, we're all opening baseball cards, and she went, very cool, and that will stick with me for the rest of my life and that's what that reminds me of.

Um, anyway, uh, the Yankees and Red Sox and Rays, probably on one side of that AL bracket are just gonna beat up each other.

Um, it'll be, you know, a short wild card series, somebody advances to the DS there, the CS is gonna end up with an AL East behemoth, probably, and One of the White Sox, Guardians 3rd wild card.

Um, and right now, I've been waiting for weeks for someone to take that 3rd wild card with a hot streak, like the Red Sox did to get into where they are from obscurity to wildcard 2, to potentially wildcard 1, to potentially AL East winners.

Um.

But no one's done it yet, and now , you know, the, the White Sox feel like the team on that side of the bracket that has the clearest ALCS shot, but the Guardians are 2.5 out on a 6-game winning streak, the run differential, finally close to netting out to 0, which, weird as it sounds in the AL that's actually an accomplishment.

Um, so, Nick, when you look at that, who, who do you think comes out of this cluster with all these playoff spots up for grabs?

Do, do the White Sox win the Central?

Do teams slot in behind them, or how much shuffling do you think gets done on that side of the bracket?

Yeah, you mentioned the, the Guardians are coming on strong, and I really felt all season that, you know, this White Sox, uh, this White Sox performance this year has really come kind of out of nowhere.

I don't think anyone really expected them to be in first place this late in the year, so.

They've sort of been playing with house money and I think kind of playing a little bit over their skis, especially from the pitching standpoint.

You know, they try to add uh to that area in the, at the trade deadline.

They added Luis Castillo.

He has not been good.

He has an ERA north of 5 in 4 starts, and that includes uh a random great outing which he went 7 scoreless.

The other 3 starts, he's not made it out of the out of the 5th inning.

Um, you know, other guys who have been good in the first half.

You know, Davis Martin has really come back to earth in a big way.

And so I just not forget about talking about who's going to start a playoff game.

I don't know if they have the pitching to get there.

I think they're they're running out of steam now and the lineup has been a real strength to them, a strength of theirs this season.

Also kind of come back to Earth while the The Guardians lineup has really gotten healthy at the perfect time.

Stephen Kwan is back.

You know, Joe Adele has provided a lot of thumbs.

He came over at the deadline.

Uh, Chase Delatter has come on strong, and obviously, you know, Jose Jose Ramirez being healthy is the straster is the drink.

So they just seem like top to bottom, a much healthier roster.

Um, and I just, I expect there's plenty of time for them to overtake the White Sox and eventually win that division.

I love the.

I have it on record here that we love the Guardian's deadline, and it was strange to watch all the work they did, sort of not ignite a fire of any kind, and, and now here we are, they're finally riding that winning streak and they look a little more whole and complete.

Uh, Robert, are you taking Mike Vassal's magic wand in the AL Central, or are you taking the field?

Are you taking the Guardians or I guess even the Twins?

No, I'm taking the Guardians, I think with exactly what he ended up saying there, and with that trade deadline that they ultimately ended up having there, I think that's gonna be a team.

That ends up making it extremely interesting in that division.

I think that they're going to overtake the White Sox.

That being said though , uh, I still am not going to discount the White Sox.

I know that's kind of like treading the waters there, uh, but I do think that the the Guardians are gonna end up coming out on top.

I think the White Sox are going to make it interesting.

I think the lack of pitching there is going to end up being what ends up getting the Guardians above the White Sox.

And , uh, I don't know if this is reported or not.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but At the deadline, one of the guys that the White Sox also had conversations about was Freddie Peralta, uh, with the New York Mets.

So that is something that they did discuss internally, but I do know that the White Sox cast a very large net.

Um, at the, on the pitching side, but they obviously end up getting Castillo.

The other team that we should not be ignoring, by the way, is the Seattle Mariners.

We've been saying on the, on the recent shows here, is Cal Riley back?

Like, where, where are we at?

Is he, is he officially back?

He's hitting homers like crazy, he's doing his thing, and his presence, if he is indeed back, that ends up making that team infinitely more dangerous, where he's not gonna be hitting the amount of home runs he hit last year, like, let's get that out of the way.

But that being said, He's an MVP caliber player, and if he's healthy finally, that's gonna be the guy who can end up getting them over the edge in that early mid-division.

Um, I think that's even putting it nicely there.

So Seattle Mariners, I, I'm calling it right now the Seattle Mariners are winning the AL West.

I'm calling it as we speak.

Winning the AL West, not just winning that third wild.

Is anyone winning the 3rd wild card spot, or can we just abolish that?

Do we need it if these teams are gonna win the?

Division, I mean, are, are you on the Mariners train in the same way that, that Robert is at this point?

All aboard.

Yeah, let's go, baby.

I can't say I'm all aboard, but when I see George Kirby, uh, turn the clock back and dominate like he did last night, that, that has my attention, you know.

I mean for years that's the strength of this organ of this roster is that starting pitching staff, and as a group they're still very, very good, but maybe not performing like they have.

You know, in the last 2 or 3 years.

And I think Kirby is kind of the, I mean, any of them could elevate and be a dominant ace suck pitcher, and I think Kirby is the one we've been waiting on for, at least from my perspective all season long.

So if he's figured something out, it tweaking a pitch mix, maybe, maybe he's just feeling healthier.

Whatever it may be, that's, that gets me excited.

So if we see more starts like that, then I'll come along and I'll, I'll ride shotgun with Robert on the manager train.

That's my guy right there, and I'll, I'll tell you, like, you look at that division, you have the Astros who are leading it, and they just fired their GM like, which is totally bonkers and And now we have, like, varying reports about Joe Espada, although I think that the stuff that was reported was, was actually, like, very inaccurate, but it seems very likely, though, that this is going to be his last season in Houston, and with that hanging over his head and the players being aware of that too, I I don't, you, you have to wonder what effect that can end up having there in Houston, so, I feel confident about the Mariners' pick, I know they're 2.5 games out right now.

Maybe I'm too confident, but yeah, I'm, I'm riding the train right now.

I'm, it's good to be driving, uh, where, where are you at, Adam?

Am, am I alone here or where are we at?

No, I, I mean, I'll, I'll approach the train, maybe I'll use my leg as a break, which, again, the train's probably moving too fast for that to work, but, um, I watched the Astros come to Yankee Stadium yesterday and have probably their most resilient win of the year, where they erased 3-2, 5-3, 6-5 deficits, like , There was not enough there there in the bullpen for me, like, it's one of those, you know, the Yankees historically do own Brian Abreu, uh, but he comes in with a two-run advantage and you're like, well, OK, what wins out here, like, the historical record or, you know, the current You know, inertia, you know, whatever the momentum that the Astros have, and then within two batters, it's 8-7, and you're like, oh, I guess maybe they just kind of do own him, and Josh Hater closed it out, got the job done.

But the Astros' offense certainly did not, you know, I have not seen the lackadaisical last couple of weeks from the Astros' offense as up close and personal as I did yesterday.

With the understanding that Yander Diaz is not gonna homer twice per game for the next 5 weeks, it didn't seem like they were quite as affected by the chaos as I expected them to be.

My thing.

I always feel like the September, something mystical happens, the schedule makers before the season know exactly what we need in September.

There are always these weird pockets of, like, I don't know why those two teams are playing now, but somehow it makes perfect sense.

After the Red Sox go to Yankee Stadium this weekend, they go home for just 3 games and it's the Mariners.

And I feel like Like, if the Mariners look revitalized and, you know, J-Rod is hitting and Big Dumper is hitting the way that he has been the past week or so, and the pitching holds up and they take 2 out of 3 or sweep the Red Sox, then I'm on the train, but if Boston keeps punching as they have at home for the last 2 months, then they could fall off course and then I'm gonna have to veer back to the Astros.

No, I'm, uh, either way, what I do know is this is gonna just being pure madness.

The AL as a whole has been absolutely crazy, but the fact that we're still this bunched up and everything, it's gonna be an absolute wild ride.

So, I, I don't, I could end up being, I could look like a total idiot here, but I don't know.

I, I'm, I'm feeling good about the Mariners, but the Astros' resilience.

We've talked about that in previous years though.

Um, their resiliency is, it's how they've been able to stay competitive and stay in this position for so long.

So, I don't know.

It's, betting against them is tough, but I'm, I'm also a believer in the Mariners and, and we'll, we'll, we'll see where we're at toward the end of the year here.

I'm, uh, I am with you on The notion, I just don't know if I can 100% get there.

Again, just give me a prove it, give me a week and a half.

Uh, meanwhile, In the West, in the wild card race in the National League.

Uh, there's a team that's a game out that doesn't have its best player and offensive engine right now and probably getting him back next week and Catel Marte, but the situation still is extremely confusing for me, from a restricted list to injured list, and now back again, casino trip, everywhere in between, um, Robert.

Last time we talked, there was even less clarity than this, somehow, there's still none, but, um, thoughts on that long-term marriage, I mean, when we last spoke , I thought, oh, we may never see him in a Diamondbacks uniform again.

Now it appears one game out of the wild card, he is gonna come back and give it a shot.

Who knows what that looks like or feels like for his teammates, uh, what's your Your thought on the really odd reunion in the desert?

Yeah, it's totally bizarre, and he's gonna have a lot of explaining to do, whether it's with ownership, whether it's with Mike Hazen, Tory Lavello, but he's also gotta look at the other players in the clubhouse and explain exactly what ended up just happening, because from their perspective, from everyone's perspective, uh, he just went up and left the team in the middle of a postseason race, and that is a terrible look all around, and then, Like he's supposed to be rehabbing and by all accounts, he did do his rehab, but immediately afterwards, instead of going by his family, uh, he goes to the casino, um, and is spotted there, and I remember, I, I think I woke up the next morning after that happened and I'm seeing Mr. AZ Sports, who's like a, a big figure out here , uh, tweeting about it and, and it's just like, holy crap, like, it's taking another turn here .

It's like, He, he had the right to do so.

Tory Lavello even said so, uh, but that was a really bad look for him.

And I think it's gonna be a tough time for him transitioning back.

Um , I really do.

And I would not be surprised if this was the beginning of the end or the continuing of the end considering what ended up happening last year too, um, of his time in Arizona.

And I've had a bunch of people be like, oh, but, like, who's gonna be interested in a guy who's having this, this many issues?

Um, he's a super talented guy.

I know he's not having the year that he's previously had, but he's among the best infielders in baseball, signed to a super affordable contract in a very weak hitter free agency class.

He's going to have a ton of interest, and I would not.

be surprised if he deemed this the time, deemed this the time to move on, if Arizona deemed it the time to move on, and they ultimately ended up allowing him to move on in the offseason.

So, this is gonna be a conversation we're gonna be having plenty of going forward, and it's just super unfortunate cause they wanted him to be there for the remainder of his career.

That's why they've redone his deal a couple of times, but this one feels different than last year's, and I would not be surprised if he was out of Arizona come next year.

You said you saw Mr. AZ tweet about it.

I was like, Jason Mraz, I, I think I missed that, but uh I'll check.

Uh, oh, yeah, well, there you go, Mr. A to Z himself.

Nick, we, we've been struggling with this one a little bit.

Um, obviously, it's really hard to make heads or tails of, like, bad free agent market, trade value rise, but crazy black mark on resume, trade value sink, like, do you see any path forward, uh, in Arizona for him and, and what the hell is that trade value like?

Yeah, I, I feel like this is the inflection point right now, um, because, you know, Tory Lovolo, to his credit, publicly has struck a very supportive tone.

It was very bizarre when he didn't show up to the game in Boston and, and Tory Lovolo was very emotional, um, speaking in very vague terms about wanting the best for him, so no one knew what was going on, obviously.

And since, you know, since he's been moved to the injured list and rehabbing and since the casino pictures came out, Lovolo has been very supportive.

He said, hey, we want him back.

We need him.

We will make sure that he has a, a, a path back to this team.

Um, so that is setting the stage for, hey, this guy's important to us and maybe it's just a short-term thing like we, we know we can't do anything about trading him now.

Well, we need him to make the playoffs this year for the next, you know, 5 weeks or so.

So maybe, maybe that's his motivation or maybe it is, this guy's been a really productive player for us.

He's really important to our success.

We have him on a team-friendly deal.

If there's a path forward for him to stay here, it starts with me welcoming him back and then Marte, the, the big inflection point will be when he does return, how does Addressed the clubhouse.

How does he, you know, explain himself?

How does he, you know, strike a public tone because he will have to answer questions from the media.

They're gonna be, you know, wanting to know what, what the deal is here from him.

So how he handles this is gonna really dictate the path forward for him.

And I think like Robert said, the trade value will still be there, you know, he's still a productive player even if his numbers taken a little dip this year and the contract is so team-friendly that if Arizona decided.

We, there's no, this, this is not a marriage that works anymore, then teams will line up to, uh, to one of services.

No, and also, I feel bad for for Toy Lovello here, because he's been put in an impossible situation here, where he's had his star player leave in back to back seasons, mid-season, just out of the blue.

Like, last year he kind of saw, he, he saw that one coming, this year, it even surprised him, and he's had to end up taking that stance publicly because he's the voice of the clubhouse, and if he ends up going out and bashing them, one, you're not gonna get Marte back, but let's say that he did return.

Uh, that would make it even more difficult for his teammates to accept him here as well.

So, I, I think an underrated storyline here is how Lavelllo's handled it or handled it, um, cause this is a, almost an impossible situation for him to have.

There's no playbook for how to handle it.

Um, so he's done very well and further proof here for me why he should, why he should be the manager in Arizona going forward cause we're still, we've even continued to hear some of the speculation about him possibly being let go of the missed the postseason, which is crazy.

I also wanna make sure for any potential aggregators, I have not been the one to hear, but it's been people that are like talking on Twitter among like fan bases or whatever.

Um, but yeah, I do not, I, I think he's done a great job, and I think he deserves more respect here for sure.

Uh, quick thoughts on the Dodgers piece, the new information out this week.

Uh, I don't wanna be accused of not talking about it on the show.

Obviously, I wasted too much time talking about opening baseball cards on my wedding day, but I do wanna make sure that we do get to it a little bit.

Robert, um, anything you learned from, from Passon's work and, and the piece and, and just thoughts on the holistic picture?

Yeah, I would say what stands out to me is still how much we don't know and just the questions that we certainly, at this point, don't have answered, um, cause there's a lot of it.

But that being said, let's say the Dodgers are indeed proven guilty of like what they're being accused of and, and they're funded illegally and whatever.

Um, That could end up really changing the entire Major League Baseball's argument for a salary cap, because their entire argument is currently being based on how the Dodgers are spending.

Um, and let's say that the Dodgers were, were funded or funded illegally, um, that would just blow the entire thing up.

And do they continue to seek a salary cap?

I, I would imagine so, but their argument would become different and a lot weaker.

So, um, let's see.

Um, OK, sorry, I, I had something, but that, that was my number one takeaway is I think this can end up having a a rather large CBA impact, perhaps larger than I think people realize.

Nick, how is your uh skeptical meter on this one?

Do you think, like, there are wide-ranging implications for the Dodgers and MLB at the end of this?

Uh, you know, if, even if Mark Walter does sell the stake, does the Dodgers' future really change all that much?

I guess that's sort of my key point here.

Yeah, you know, I, I won't be, I won't pretend to be, you know, an expert in white-collar crime, um, to, to go into detail of what Mark Walter has been accused of, but, you know, the Dodgers' financial advantages, um, are not just limited to Mark Walter.

You know, obviously, having an ownership group with money is a massive advantage that's stating, you know, the very obvious, but the Dodgers' local TV deal revenue and the fact that they, they used all that capital, that surplus to get the most marketable and profitable player that's ever existed.

is plays a huge role here.

And, and that's not gonna change based on however this Mark Walters situation ends up.

Um, at least I don't believe so.

Like Robert said, there's still a lot we don't know.

Um, so if the Dodgers did get sold, I would imagine that they would still be the behemoths and they would still be, you know, they'd still have Andrew Freeman.

They'd still have Uh, numerous advantages to be the, the sort of financial bullies in the sport.

But with new ownership, with an ownership change, especially one under duress like this, throws everything into a, a, a bit of uncertainty, um, as far as how the operations will go.

Um, I would imagine that Mark Walter is looking to offload assets to, to get capital to buy his way out of this mess he's in.

There's an everything must go sign in front of his front lawn, but the Dodgers are not on the front lawn.

He'll hold on to that as long as he possibly can is what I would imagine.

Um, so, obviously we're still at the beginning of this.

There's a lot of twists and turns to take, but that's how I kind of see it at this point.

No, I totally agree.

Yup, that's where I'm at.

But again, don't profess to know .
