How Much Power Do F1 Engines Have?

Formula 1 is the fastest motorsport series in the world, but their engines (officially known as power units) might not produce as much horsepower as you'd expect. Here's how much they make with the current regulation changes for the 2026 season.

Formula One cars are among the fastest racing machines on earth.

They can accelerate from zero to two hundred kilometers an hour in around five seconds, reach speeds of over three hundred and fifty kilometers an hour.

But how much horsepower actually powers these incredible machines?

The answer has changed dramatically in twenty twenty-six.

A modern twenty twenty-six Formula One car produces around a thousand horsepower, and that's equivalent to about seven hundred and fifty kilopo-- kilowatts of peak power.

Unlike previous generations, that power is now split almost evenly between a turbocharged V6 engine and an electric motor.

It's one of the biggest changes introduced under Formula One's new regulations.

The one-point-six-liter turbocharged V6 internal combustion engine now produces four hundred kilowatts or around five hundred and thirty-six horsepower, and that's significantly less than previous F1 engines.

But it's designed to run on a hundred percent sustainable fuel, making Formula One more environmentally sustainable without sacrificing performance.

The biggest change for twenty twenty-six, though, is the electric motor.

The upgraded MGU-K now delivers up to three hundred and fifty kilowatts or approximately four hundred and sixty-nine horsepower, and that's nearly three times more electric power than previously hybrid engines in the last generation of Formula One.

Together, the engine and electric motor combine to produce roughly a thousand horsepower.

But here's the catch: drivers can't use all one thousand horsepower continuously.

The battery has a limited amount of energy, and drivers must constantly manage energy deployment, as well as their battery recharge and lift and coast techniques to harvest that energy.

It's why modern Formula One is as much about energy management as outright speed.

The-- A typical family car produces around a hundred and fifty to two hundred and fifty horsepower, and a modern supercar might produce seven hundred to nine hundred horsepower.

Even many hypercars struggle to match an F1 car's combination of power, weight, and aero.

That's why Formula One remains the benchmark for circuit racing performance.

Though, while a hundred or-- a thousand horsepower is impressive, it's not what makes an F1 car so fast.

The real advantage comes from incredible aero, massive downforce, lightweight construction, and world-class tires.

Combined, they allow drivers to carry astonishing speed through corners that would be impossible for any road car.

So how much horsepower does a Formula One car have?

It's around a thousand.

Roughly si-- five hundred and thirty-six horsepower comes from the turbocharged V6, and another four hundred and sixty-nine is supplied by the electric motor.

It's one of the most advanced hybrid powertrains ever built, and in modern Formula One, it's not, just about having the most power, but it's knowing exactly when to use it, which they can't anyway continuously around a lap, so here comes all the energy management stuff as well.
