It Is Okay to Say That Josh Allen is a Better Quarterback Than Patrick Mahomes
Ross Johnston evaluates the Athletic's ranking of the Top 35 Quarterbacks in the NFL according to executives and coaches. He makes the case for Josh Allen to be ranked #1 over Patrick Mahomes.

Well, we've got another quarterback ranking list, so that means we've got to talk about it.
What's up, y'all?
It's Ross Johnston with A to Z Sports, and Mike Sando of The Athletic surveyed fifty NFL coaches and executives to poll the top thirty-five quarterbacks in the league currently.
Very smart group of people, people who are very close to football all the time, watching ball, coaching it, whatever.
Did they really get it right?
I do have one gripe in the top five, and I'm here to talk about it.
Now, if you want to see all the others below me, you certainly can, all the guys near the middle to bottom of the league.
But keeping an eye on the top five, I do think they got the top five right.
Number one, all by himself, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tied at two, Bills' Josh Allen, Rams' Matthew Stafford.
At four, Joe Burrow with the Bengals, and at five, Lamar Jackson with the Ravens.
Now, here's what gets me a little bit with this.
Patrick Mahomes is certainly a top five quarterback.
He is one of the best in the world at what he does.
I don't think he is still the best quarterback in the National Football League.
I think that belongs to Josh Allen.
You could obviously go at it from the Matthew Stafford angle as well if you want to be super recent, given that he just won the MVP.
But Josh Allen won the MVP in '24, and he has shown over the past couple seasons that he is the best in the league.
In the entire decade of the 2020s so far, Josh Allen has had over forty total touchdowns every single season.
Patrick Mahomes has not hit that mark since his 2022 MVP season.
People also love to get on Josh Allen for his turnovers.
Mahomes has had double-digit picks each of the past three seasons and has not been good in that mark as well, or at least up to his standard.
A lot of the talk about Josh Allen this offseason as well has been his quite frankly poor playoff performance against the Denver Broncos.
But I want you to consider Josh Allen's career playoff stats so far.
Josh Allen has a passer rating of one oh one point five.
He's thrown for thirty-nine hundred yards, twenty-nine touchdowns, and six picks in fifteen playoff games.
That is absurd, and that even includes the poor game last year at Denver.
Now, I'm not here to say Josh Allen does no wrong.
He has certainly made his mistakes.
But he has been better than Patrick Mahomes for the past two or three seasons, and that is okay to say, despite Mahomes being the NFL sweetheart.
Again, overall, it is not to disrespect Mahomes or any of the other quarterbacks in the top five or on this list.
I just think that it is pretty obvious at this point that Josh Allen is the best quarterback in the league.
Not by a wide margin.
Mahomes and Stafford, and maybe even Lamar, are right there.
But it's okay to say that Josh Allen is the best quarterback in the league.
Will that result in a Super Bowl this year for Buffalo?
I don't know.
But what I do know is that when you're going into the season with the top guy at the position, the most important position in all of sports, you got a pretty good chance, and maybe they can break through this year.
