PL Update: Wolves shock Liverpool at the Molineux
Cara Banks, Robbie Earle, and Robbie Mustoe recap an action-packed day that saw Wolves upset Liverpool, Everton defeat Burnley, Bournemouth's stalemate with Brentford, and Sunderland downing Leeds at Elland Road.

My goodness, that match picked up some pace at Molineux.
In case you missed any of it, let's get straight to highlights from Wolves hosting Liverpool.
Talk us through it, Robbie.
Well, all the action came in the second half.
Krychiau here is gonna block the cross coming in.
The question was, was it, his arm?
Catches his elbow, but he's, it's in an expected position.
It's not away from his body.
No penalty kick was given.
VAR confirmed that too, and then a chance for Liverpool, and you'll see here Curtis Jones goes in, and Kk doesn't read the bounce of the ball.
You'll see as it comes in, Gakpo actually gets his foot to the ball when it's flicked on.

Somehow Wolves are able to clear it away.
Quite sure maybe Curtis Jones doesn't want to put his head in there where the boots are flying, but Wolves get away with one there, and then they get the goal, and it's really well worked.
Tolu the defen- holds off the defenders, and Rodrigo Gomes, who scored against Villa last time out, it's a brilliant finish, and it's a really well-worked goal from Wolves' point of view.
Goes up to the front man.
He occupies the two center-backs.
Gomes is already on the run.
When he takes the ball there and plays it into the path of Goodley, now this touch is excellent because it draws the goalkeeper, stops the defender getting there, so a really smart finish to put Wolves one-nil up.
And then a couple of minutes later, it's a really good save from Jos S. It keeps Wolves the lead because when it comes in from Engomawa, I think he, he feels he's scored there, and that's fingertips from the goalkeeper and knocks it onto the post.
And then Wolves really let themselves down.
Balag came on as a sub and gave the ball away, and it was a one bright moment for Mo Salah, who just hits it with the outside of his left foot past the goalkeeper.
There's Balag, he's trying to keep it safe but gives the ball away, and in the turnover, Salah sharp enough to get his first Premier League goal since November the 1st to bring Liverpool level.
But that wasn't the end of the drama, and when Wolves got the ball, 90-plus-four minutes on the clock, Andr, who's a tireless worker in midfield, gets a bit of luck, and, and luck he might say he deserves because when he picks this ball up in this area, there's plenty of space.
Liverpool haven't got good structure, and the ball flicks off Gomes into the back of the net, and Wolves celebrate a famous victory.
And by the way, that was the first time ever a team in the relegation zone has scored a ninetieth-minute winner against the reigning Premier League champions.
It has been quite the last few weeks for Wolves.
They're not gonna go down lightly.
Just one loss in their last six matches in all competitions, taking points off the likes of Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Liverpool.
First back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
For Arne Slot, though, it's a ninth Premier League loss, so here's what the Liverpool boss had to say.
Arne, clearly a bad result.
How do you analyze that, if you can?
Of course you can.
like you said, bad result.
far from a good first half.
Second half, there was a bit more urgency.
We were, getting closer and closer to scoring a goal, but, then conceded probably the first moment they arrived, in and around our box.
we immediately struck back, first by hitting the post, afterwards Mo, and then, we were twice close of making the winner with Mo Salah once in a counterattack and with Virgil's header.
But in the end, conceded a deflected shot, which wasn't even a chance.
Yeah.
I guess the manner, though, of the way you maybe lose chances, if not goals, is that frustrating?
It must be.
Yeah, of course, because, even more because we know how hard we have to work to score a goal because, yeah, I said before the game, recently we're mainly scoring from, set pieces.
We create enough chances, but we, we, we find it quite hard to convert those chances into, into goals.
And, yeah.
Then conceding two is too much, to get a result.
And you mentioned you didn't really feel the team gave much in the first half.
That's unfortunately for you a recurring theme, isn't it?
No, I wouldn't say gave a lot, but I saw more urgency the second half than the first half.
So also in the first half, we had a lot of ball possession but weren't able to penetrate a lot of times in their eighteen-yard box, which we were able to do more in the second half than in the first half.
You don't feel you have a slow start to games.
Is that, is that just an impression we get from the outside?
No, last week we had a very fi- a good start, being three goal, scoring three goals.
But, but yeah, there are two teams on the pitch and, and, usually the team who you face is also fitter in the first half than the second half.
So sometimes you need to, put a, put something in it in the first half to let them keep on running because we have so much ball possession.
Then they are a bit more tired in the second half, and that's why it opened it up a little bit more the second half.
But, yeah, hardly conceded a chance, created not so much, but more than they did.
But, the result is again, a two-one loss.
And a frustration, I imagine, because it's not the first time this season you feel you've got a little momentum, and then you lose that momentum.
Is that again fair?
Yeah, that's fair.
Yeah.
Yeah.
we are losing far too many football games, and dropping points and, was it again in extra time today that we conceded?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So the three times we lost in the last twenty-two games was all three times in extra time.
And you've got to come back here and do it again Friday.
Yeah.
Which is a good thing and a nice thing because we have something, to prove on Friday.
Virg, how do you put that defeat and performance, I guess, into words?
listen, I think it's, down to ourselves.
I think we were slow, we were predictable, sloppy in possession, wrong decision-making.
And, obviously we didn't concede chances, but obviously, if you perform like that, then a result like this could beresult of, of that and, that's, that's, that's the fact and that's disappointing, from tonight.
You got the fastest start of the weekend, but often it feels like in games you, you're struggling to get a start, a fast start.
Yeah, but the thing is, there's not, not one reason why that's the case.
You know, obviously, the f- the game nowadays in general will be over-analyzed and analyzed and why it's, why things are happening, on the pitch and we, we as a team, we wanna start the game as well as we can, and last game we did.
Today we had majority of the possession, but we were still making wrong decision, I think, and, couldn't find the end product.
And, and yeah, in the end, it's just disappointing that we lost it today.
Yeah, disappointing indeed.
They had four wins in their last five Premier League games entering this, dropped points today from the position that they were in before stoppage time.
This is not what you expect from the champions- No against the team placed 20th in the league table right now.
No, I, I think I agree with, certainly what Virgil said there.
Virgil was kind of honest there about sloppy and making bad decisions, and we wanna start quickly, but, but they're not.
And, and you're right, this is Wolverhampton Wanderers, that's their third, I think their third win of the season.
Yeah.
So I mean, of all of Liverpool being slower and sloppier, you still expect them to go there and win, particularly what they're going for and how tight it is and how important, and you might assume you're gonna get three points, which you shouldn't.
But Liverpool play, start the game thinking it looked like they were gonna, they were gonna comfortably win the game.
Do you think that is part of it?
Do you think there was some presumption perhaps?
Possibly.
You know, and we expect a lot of this Liverpool team as reigning champions and, and, and it didn't really show up and, you know, the sloppiness, giving the ball away, sometimes is you're not mentally right in, in the right spot.
They've lost nine Premier League g- games now, Liverpool.
That's as many as Sunderland who've just got promoted.
Yeah, always fear the underdog as well they say, right?
Don't they?
What a result it was for Wolves, not so good for Liverpool.

This ball is pulled back for Tavernier, and it just goes agony- agonizingly wide here.
There was there a deflection, takes it away from the goal there right at the end.

We saw this with Jordan Henderson.
It looks like he's, it's scuffling with the, the coaches over there, the Bournemouth coaches.
It's not like him to lose his rag like that.

So meanwhile, over at Hill Dickinson Stadium, it was a good day for Everton.
Yeah, the captain, James Tarkowski, former Burnley player, gets his head to the ball in.
This is a set piece routine that's worked on the training ground.
Tarkowski goes offside to pull the defenders back.
Then before the ball's kicked, gets himself onside there.
It's clear now it's delivered.
Now he's gonna attack the ball, and there's the goal and that's work that's done on the dressing room and that's the set piece that David Moyes will, will like.
And then James Garner has a chance here with the header that comes in.
It's well saved by the goalkeeper, and there's enough bodies to make sure Dewsbury-Hall doesn't hit the target.
It's one of those that's flicked on at the near post, but saved in the end from Dubravka.
And then into the second half, good football from Everton.
Put this together nicely, McNeil to Ndiaye, Ndiaye to Dewsbury-Hall, and he's got a lovely left foot.
Look how he just lifts it over the goalkeeper.
It's a beautiful, clean finish that gives Everton the two-nil lead.

And then Burnley get themselves a chance later on.
Lyle Foster with his near effort was expelled by the goalkeeper, but he's in great form, Jordan Pickford, who came up with a super save at Newcastle.
That's a good reaction from the goalkeeper, and it's back-to-back wins for Everton and David Moyes, who are going very nicely.

Over to Elland Road now and Leeds hosted Sunderland, both newly promoted sides, Masty.

That was, was chalked off and again, this happened in, in like five or six minutes here, and all of a sudden there's a, a penalty to Sunderland.

And that looks like a deliberate action.
VAR spots it, tells the referee to go to the side.
He agrees, and the ball is a penalty.
Habib Diarra, not the most convincing, but it, it finds the back of the net for Sunderland to get that away victory and three points and cause for celebration.
It's 40 points now for, for Sunderland Football Club.
Yeah, and interesting you mention that number 40 because Sunderland have reached that target that Reggie Sleberry set several months ago.
He said that would be good for us this season if we could get to 40 points on the table, and they've already achieved it now with nine games still to play.
It is their highest Premier League points total since 2011-12 when they had 45.

What can you say about Mel Kerelberg comes in for his debut, hostile atmosphere, and to perform like that and keep his clean sheet?
Yeah, I know that, for some players like Luke, for example, it was not easy, but, we need everyone.
In football, you can't just have the 11 or 18 players.
You need all the squad, and he's a big example for this team because we speak a, a lot with each other and, he deserve all this respect what he have because he's a, he's a legend in this football club, and not only him, but all the players who was new today showed big character and big personality, and this is what you need.
can I ask you about the penalty?
When it was going in, were you worried at all?
It looked like Carl Dale got very close to it.
Yeah, I was slightly worried.
I was talking to their striker about it because I know, I know what sort of penalty he does, but I think, Habib had it under control, didn't he?
I think just about.
But look, as you mentioned, that gets you to 40 points now.
Mentally, does that feel like a big barrier that you can maybe kick on now and get yourself back up the table?
We need to stay humble.
We know where we, where we come from.
how I said before, our target was 40 points.
When you achieve, when you achieve the first one, you want more, and this team, we feel that we have the hungers here.
We, we want more and, we are taking it by game, and let's see where we get in end.

Sunderland have been winless in their last four Premier League matches.
That was a big three points for them tonight.
Now on 40 points, as you've heard mentioned, that's tied with Bournemouth and Fulham, but puts Sunderland 11th right now.
They will no doubt be eyeing a finish in the top half of the Premier League to end this season.
Who's captured your attention most today in these, these other games?
It was a, it was a good penalty conversion for Sunderland to get that win.
I'm, I'm going for Sunderland and Reyes Labris.
To do what he's done with this football club, a promoted team, they were 24 points behind Leeds last season in the championship.
To have stayed up, where they have the 40 points is incredible, and he won't win it, but he should be in the running for manager of the year.

Absolutely, 100%.
I mean, to basically buy and build a new team in the transfer windows and to finish or, or, or to be where they are right now is pretty astonishing, really, and I think the, the team and the club will be studied- with teams that get promoted, how did they do it?
Because that's kind of remarkable, and you know, where they are right now, they can maybe push on and finish in the top eight.
I mean, they're, they're, they're ahead of Newcastle United, and that's why the And by the way, that wasn't at their s- that was an away game at Leeds.
That's how good the Sunderland fans are.
Sunderland, as we know, that's a big club.
Big club, yeah.

Yeah, away at Elland Road is never an easy game.

And to your point about Leeds, they're down in 15th, with 31 points total, and you see them right there, so that is nine below Sunderland, newly promoted as well.
So Sunderland 11th, the highest of the promoted clubs.

And further down, Wolves suddenly look alive.

They are certainly not giving up, and even though they stay bottom of the table, Burnley now sit just three points above.
Meanwhile, take a look at the top half.
Arsenal and Manchester City are separated by five points, but City do have a game in hand and both clubs will play tomorrow.
Liverpool squander an opportunity today to go 11 on points level on points, excuse me, with Man United and Aston Villa, which means Chelsea have a chance to move into fifth place tomorrow when they face Aston Villa.
Brentford, Everton, Bournemouth, and Fulham round out the top 10.
