Spring practice, Dunit, Florida, still going on in Alabama.
Is there a leader for the quarterback jobs?
We talked as Zach Alvaverde from Gators Online.
We talked to Charlie Potter from Bama Online to break down the quarterback competitions at Florida and Alabama.

There's a fight in the outfield at the Ole Miss LSU baseball game.

We got quarterback competitions popping off after some spring games because we finally got to see these guys play a little bit.
Florida and Alabama.
We're going to talk about Tennessee later in the week.
But we got a little taste of the Tremel Jones universe's Aaron Filo at Florida, a taste of Kiel and Russell versus Austin Mac at Alabama.
And everybody's got their opinions now, Ari.
Andy, so this is an endangered species, right?
Yes.
They're quarterback competitions.
And it's funny because neither of them have feature two players that signed with the program out of high school, but still they're still pure, right?
Each one has one player who signed with the program out of high school.
But it's not just like a purely vintage one where just high school players who have been on the team for a few years.
We're going to talk about that tomorrow with Tennessee.
Yes.
But anyway, yes, it feels good to be actually talking about quarterback competitions were in mid-April.
These are two of the most important ones, obviously being in the SEC is a jet fuel to whatever quarterback competitions would be elsewhere.
And I'm just like, I'm excited to really like dive into it with people who are close to them.
Well, and it's amazing is these spring games.
The coach has always talked about it's 15 practices.
This is another practice.
It's really hard to tell a lot of the time if somebody just had a really good day and somebody had a really bad day or is this what it's looked like the whole time?
And because I think in both cases at Florida and Alabama, the folks came out of the game saying the guy who signed with our team out of high school before last season is the one who looked the best today.
And very different situations too, right?
Like, like, like, like, he and Russell was a five star all world.
Sine.
Tremel Jones was pretty highly ranked, but wasn't like that, right?
Right.
And it was considered he was coming in, he was going to back up DJ lagway and then the hope was he would eventually succeed DJ lagway when lagway went pro.
And it obviously did not work out that way.
But it's interesting because Tremel Jones, Jr. also in the circumstance that happened where the coach gets fired, new coach comes in.
A lot of times that person is just transferring.
But in this case, he wanted to stay at Florida.
John Summerall met him and was like, oh, I think you could be very valuable for us.
And they worked to keep him even though they were bringing in Aaron Filo, who was following Buster Faulkner, the O.C.
from Georgia Tech.
So it's a very intriguing competition in Gainesville.
So let's bring somebody who's been following it the whole way on a granular level.
Zach Avivarty from Gators Online joins us to break down Aaron Filo versus Tremel Jones, Jr.
Right now.
We're going to join now by Zach Avivarty from Gators Online and Zach, you had a very interesting Saturday because you were watching a quarterback competition unfold before your eyes.
Aaron Filo versus Tremel Jones, Jr.
It was very interesting to see the way it shook out with two guys that were completing a lot of passes, but it seemed like the Tremel Jones ones popped a little more.
They did.
I mean, there is no doubt Tremel had the better day, right?
I mean, he had the play of the game.
He showed off his arm.
He didn't have any interceptions, didn't have any sacks.
And at least showed that this is a true quarterback competition.
We've been saying it all offseason, but this is not a situation where Aaron has this clear leg up on the competition because of his experience in Buster Fockner system.
And Aaron did some great things on Saturday as well, particularly bouncing back from the turnovers that he had.
That last minute of the first half, he really put it together.
So it's going to continue into the offseason and into training camp, but Jones certainly made his case for the job on Saturday.
I know that we like to overreact to spring games.
It's one of the advantages of being in this.
We have an entire segment on this show every week during the spring, where we just take four second clips and completely blow them out of proportion.
But what's your actual feels, Zach, of the competition and how it's set up and how you think it's going to play out?
I think that there's advantages that both guys have.
Aaron obviously has time experience, chemistry with Buster Fockner, having played for him for two years.
He knows the offense.
He knows what Buster is trying to do, attacking defenses.
It gives him an advantage.
I mean, Tremel basically admitted that he was obsessed this offseason, trying to catch up with the playbook so that Aaron didn't have that much of an advantage on him.
You can see that when he operates the offense.
He's decisive.
He knows what he's doing.
He knows where he's trying to go with the football.
Whereas Tremel, some of early on in the spring game, you could see that he doesn't really have that down pat yet.
However, Tremel has the better arm.
He's the better athlete.
He probably has a higher ceiling.
I also think that if he is outperforming, following some ways, they're not going to be able to sell that to this locker room by just giving Aaron the job, not that they would.
I think that it's the way that the spring game played out in terms of who got the series.
They each got six series.
But it was clearly set up to me, Advantage Aaron.
It didn't play out that way in the spring game.
I think obviously coming out of it, a lot of fans feel like Tremel should be quarterback once.
He's not going to win the job just off of that performance alone.
It's really going to come down, I think, in training camp to which way do they want to go?
The guy that really knows this offense, that maybe they can count on a little bit more versus the guy that's got this ceiling, a big arm, might make some more mistakes in Aaron, but has more big play potential.
So one of the things that John Sumeral said is they were shuffling offensive line and they're trying to make that happen.
Here's Sumeral on the quarterbacks, but then the offense as a whole, which I found interesting and I want to get your thoughts on the timeline.
Oh, yeah.
No, look, I completely understand the interest.
I'm interested in it, but I'm interested in that in like a thousand other things.
So I think too often the storyline is always the quarterback, the quarterback, the quarterback, and I'm pretty *** worried about who the right tackle is and who the left tackle is and who, so those decisions are as important to be quite honest with you because they're protecting the quarterback.
So Zach, they did mix and match offensive lineman series by series in the spring game.
Do you think he wants to have that figured out before he makes a decision on the quarterback?
Yes, I do.
And I think to build chemistry offensively to settle on a starting five and allow that quarterback to kind of get some camaraderie with his unit because look, that's not helping those guys every time that they're in, there's a different combination out there blocking for them.
So that's something that I think, you know, a week or two into training camp, they're going to want to make a decision on and commit to five before they settle on a QB.
I want that Florida hat.
There's one thing that Florida jump man hat is like, I don't, I went and actually tried to fight.
Some all has a great hat game period.
He's a head into Lane and Troy too.
Yeah, I think that there is a correlation between like how a coach is like present themselves, like dressed and drip and all that.
I think he's got some Loki really good drip.
Somebody told him as well, don't wear black.
He's literally because his napier wore it.
Yes.
Oh, when games and you wear whatever you want.
Yeah, we're going to start that now.
Black is very slimming.
I'm told.
Black, I have a question for you though and I'm like, curious about this because you said it a few times and I've always wondered this.
That's the all wear.
We're all wearing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But how much does like experience and Faulkner system actually matter if you didn't play that much?
It matters because when he played, he delivered, right?
Like he, he beat number four Miami with him quarterbacking their team.
They beat NC State when he basically had the whole game.
So it matters in the sense that he's he's done more with his opportunities and what Chermel has been able to get through his true freshman year where he redshirt it.
But then it's also just practice after practice, scrimmage after scrimmage like the time that he has in the system.
It does show up.
I mean, even earlier this spring, like watching some of the team periods, hearing how some of the first two scrimmages went, that was the one thing that was said to me was Aaron's decisiveness.
Like that's what makes him play faster.
That's what makes him operate at a better level is he just knows what he's doing and he knows the offense.
So that's where it plays in.
I do think to your point though, if he had not had some of the game experience and success that he had with that, it wouldn't be as much of an advantage.
But it sounds to me like Chermel was like the freakier athlete fan favorite here.
Correct.
It is.
Well, but also the Chermel thing, and I think there's some history here that people need to understand.
He was the guy who took all the off-season practice reps when DJ Lagway couldn't and the locker room embraced him.
It feels like when some were all got there and was interviewing the players, Chermel got this massive vote of confidence from everybody.
Yep.
100%.
And that's why I go into my point earlier.
If he is clearly outperforming Aaron, they are not going to be able to name Aaron the starter.
They will lose the locker room, which is not what you want to do right out of the gate your first year with the new staff.
And I don't anticipate just knowing John and even Buster for the little bit that I've got to know them.
They are going to play the best guy.
I think that they also are aware of how that locker room feels about Chermel.
That's also something that plays into the quarterback competition.
The way that the guys play for you, and that's something that Aaron has had to do obviously this offseason, proving himself to these players and winning the team over.
So here's what John Summoner all said about what happens next, which I think it's interesting because obviously the situation has changed as there's no spring portal window this year.
We don't actually know what that means yet.
But here's what he said he's going to do starting today.
I think it quarterback going back like I said this before, when you get the whole whatever the picture of the offense is around them settled that makes it easier to play quarterbacks right now with the line being in such flux of moving a lot of guys around.
There's not as much continuity, but both guys have done some good things.
You know, I think that room's done good things as a whole.
I'll sit down with all those guys on Monday and have a really transparent conversation about hey, after 15 practices, this is where we are.
I'll talk to them about hey, if we had to play a game next week, this is probably what it would look like.
I won't make an announcement because we don't play a game next week, but I want them to know kind of after we wrap up, I think our players, they deserve and earned.
They've earned honest conversations.
So I'll meet it with all 111 this week and I'll talk through kind of where you are, where you are, where we need to go next to continue to grow and develop.
So nothing's decided yet.
But I do think sometimes we can almost make too much about the quarterback deal when it's like, hey, we got to figure out who our O'Line is and which tight ends can do what and which backs are certain types of runners.
But the quarterback's done some good things.
He knows why we're focusing on the quarterback, but Zach, how do you think that conversation goes?
When he sits down with Tremel Jones Jr., when he sits down there and file a, how do you think that conversation goes?
Yeah, that's the one beauty of this spring portal is now you can be honest and not worry about a guy bolting on you.
I think that they're probably going to tell Aaron that he is a little bit ahead of still in this competition, but that Tremel is making strides and right on his tail and that he needs to, they're going to tell him what he needs to do this off season to win the job.
And I think that the message will be for Tremel is, hey, you've done a good job this spring learning the offense, making your case, you need to continue to do that throughout the summer and fall.
And then once we get to training camp, you're going to have an opportunity to win this job.
So like I'm going to put out my project to Dept chart today, like as much as I want, I'm sure the fans want me to see put Tremel as KB1, I'm going to put it over there because I do still think that it is a little bit up in there and decided as to how this thing is going to play out, but it's clearly not a situation where Aaron's just got it and it's his job to lose.
I think that this could go either way still.
We like to put guns to heads at the show.
Who do you think is going to win the job?
Ah, man.
Look at you.
It's a podcast.
There's no, there's no penalty for me.
There are no repercussions for being wrong is what I was saying, but your message board what this agrees at.
Yeah, yeah.
No, just a prediction.
People like to know.
Yeah, I mean, if I had the lean one guy that I think is likely to get the first nod, I still think it's likely to be FILO.
I just I think that he's going to, he's going to basically have to really not progress this offseason and have Tremel just make this big leap in summer and fall.
Which could happen, but I still think that, you know, I also think that there's a likelihood that we might see both of them in the first game, even though they might roll out with one guy as the starter.
But yeah, if I had to project months ahead, I still could think that Aaron is more likely to win the job.
But man, I wouldn't be surprised if Tremel did.
And I also think that they're going to, it's going to be hard to keep Tremel just on the sideline the entire season.
There's probably going to be opportunities that he has to get in games.
Well, all right, one of the things that is interesting about this quarterback race is who they get to throw to and I have.
So Ari's really pumping the hope in right now, because he saw the Mike Amaze catch.
We all know about Eric Singleton Jr. Ari's because he's obsessed with five stars love Dallas loves Dallas Wilson.
That's Wilson's going to be awesome.
It's guaranteed.
Ari tells Zach what you what you texted me this morning.
Is it possible that Florida has the best receiver room in the country in 2026?
I mean, they're going to have one of the best one of the best in the country.
If everybody is better than Ohio States, because they have to be better than Ohio States.
Yeah, they have general.
I'm going to say that.
I'm going to be.
Yeah, it'll be one best definitely one of the best in the SEC.
If not the best like they've got options, man, like that they're starting unit is going to be very good at wide receiver with Fernail Brown, the third Eric Singleton and Dallas Wilson, like those three are legit.
But you also got Mike Amaze who stole the show on Saturday with his performance.
They really like Bailey Stockton who plays in the slot for them coming over from Georgia Tech.
He's a guy that they can count on.
TJ Abrams is one of the receivers that they retained that they liked.
You got Khalil Jackson as well.
That's part of that rotation.
Then they got some freshmen too that are that were really highly touted and day beyond gross and and just the William.
So there's no shortage of options.
But like at the top of the depth chart, their starters, man, is as good as it gets.
Like well, let's not forget.
Let's see.
Yeah, I think that's what gets that slot as it gets and Dallas Wilson is like your prototypical extra seer.
Let's not forget Luke Harper, who's dad was busy drilling threes in the in the league back in the day.
Well, and we got some we got a little bit of news from Buster Faulkner after the spring game.
He said that there's been some separation at tight end and a mere Jackson and Luke Harper and have separated themselves from the pack and been the two most productive players, which is a surprise to me.
Obviously, a mere Jackson looks like a million bucks.
He's just learning how to play tight end.
And then yeah, you mentioned the pedigree from harpring.
You think that guy can jump out of the gym and catch some catch some jump balls?
Well, I watch his dad play a lot of hoops.
I know he's an athlete, but I want to ask you about something that has no effect on this season.
But is one of the reasons because I had somebody text me about this the other day.
And they said, I thought, I thought the Florida fans were tepid on the summer all higher.
I'm like, they were initially, but they've really come around on him because of a bunch of different reasons.
But one of the reasons is so last week, Max Hiller, five star offensive guard from Pennsylvania commits to Florida.
The first five star offensive lineman to commit to Florida sends Martez IV in 2015.
Oh, wow.
I was at my 20th.
I was in my 20th.
Right.
And Max Hillers from Pennsylvania.
Got one.
They're new offensive line coach who came from Penn State clearly had been working on him for a long time.
But how different does that feel?
Because that's something it feels like the last couple of administrations, like they just did.
They were never in the mix for the really highly touted, really toolsy offensive lineman.
And by design, and by design, like there was an attitude from some of the previous offensive line coaches that were not going to pay that amount of money for a high school offensive lineman.
And that stands.
And sometimes like you can pick certain situations and examples where maybe that makes sense and that's a good evow.
But like at the end of the day, you cannot go a dozen years without signing a five star offensive lineman and be competitive in the SEC.
And if you're going to have the stance of, okay, we're not going to spend on these guys out of high school because we want to see, we're not ready.
It's a projected projectile position.
So we're not going to invest in the amount of high school.
So then what's the alternative to go get an elite high caliber lineman out of the portal?
Those are even, those are way more expensive, way more coveted, way more harder to get out of the portal than they are out of high school.
So that's one thing that I like about this commitment for Florida.
Not only does it end the drought of five star offensive lineman, but it shows that Phil Trot wine and John Summeral and the staff and the GM Dave Codwell, like they get it.
They understand that you have to invest in high school offensive lineman, elite high school offensive lineman as much as it might hurt to stomach, paying them that much when it's a developmental position.
You don't necessarily know how they're going to pan out.
If you trust your evows and you're good at recruiting, you can get those guys then versus trying to go get them in the portal.
Go ask how expensive Jordan Seedon was.
Like trying to go get those guys are very tough.
So you're better off to try and do it at high school, in my opinion.
Yeah, the premium of it in the portal is so hard because how many of you are like true tackles are there in the given cycle three or four?
Yeah, this guy is like three, four, five million dollars on those guys.
This guy is a five star plus interior offensive lineman recruits.
So it's possible he plug in and play.
He might be that good.
I mean, on the side of the, you still have to, you still have to do it because LSU is going to do it.
Alabama is going to do it.
Jordan is going to do it.
You got to do it.
And so that's the other thing.
I do feel like Florida has had the money.
Like I think that they're donors and even before there was NIL, right?
The back of the day and we were dropping bags.
Like I think Florida was.
That never happens.
That never happens.
And I just think, I mean, John, have a scene in Rob sale.
We're just like, no, I'm not spending two million dollars on a 17 year old.
And all right, there's a bunch of other programs that did and they benefited from it.
Mm hmm.
Well, Zach, it's going to be a fun offseason.
As Florida goes through the summer, tries to figure out what they're going to do.
But this quarterback thing is going to be the topic of conversation in Gainesville for the next three months.
It is.
What's ready to referee this?
I am, but I also love the brutal honesty from John Summeraw as he keeps beating the table saying, you guys keep talking about the quarterback.
And I'm worried about the offensive line.
And when I asked him about it straight up was like, if they don't have a great summer, we have no freaking chance.
No chance.
And I was like, okay, I love the, I love that.
Yeah.
And Ari's beloved receiving core has no chance if the quarterback's on his back every play.
So Summeraw's right about that.
He is.
And again, he's trying to take off some of the, you know, topic of that conversation.
At the end of the day, though, it's the most important position in off sports.
And we're going to talk in debate about it all offseason until that first game.
Zach, thank you so much.

Ari, we are probably not going to know an answer to that until the first couple games and two, Zach's point floor.
He's got a couple warmups before they play Auburn in week three.
So they could get a good look at both of them in the games before they really nailed out a decision.
Yeah.
Super fascinated by raw, exciting talent versus experience and familiarity.
You know, and I think that you pointed this out during the interview.
And I think it's true that he has gotten a lot of reps at Florida as the one because DJ Lugway was hurt for a large portion of last off season.
But the other thing that I think that, you know, needs to be taken into account, although very different systems and different coaches is that Tremel Jones was also *** into games during very uncomfortable and unpredictable situations during Tremor Tremoil.
And I think performed, if I remember correctly, pretty well given the circumstances, right?
Yeah.
So he didn't really have much of it.
Like you could have put in the Kentucky game when it was pretty much over.
I would say Filo has the far more game works while game experience.
And so that probably weighs pretty heavily because Buster Faulkner has called plays for Aaron Filo in games and understands how he operates.
So Tremel Jones has more to overcome, but you play like you did on Saturday and you might overcome it.
Yeah.
And I also think that the locker room loving you is a very underrated aspect to this.
Yeah.
It doesn't always work.
But it is important.
And the locker room is really going to steer you wrong in these things.
I always go back to the Clemson situation with Kelly Bryant and Trevor Lawrence.
And this is the midst of a national championship season where basically the Abu Suini decides to go with Trevor Lawrence for games in which gives Kelly Bryant a chance to transfer in red shirt.
And you don't do that unless you know that the best players on your team are cool with that.
And like the first thing that happened was Christian Wilkins publicly endorses the decision.
And like that, that matters a lot.
Yeah.
So how much credit or how much do you think players know?
Like they really know because they're experiencing it.
And like that's the thing that I've never really understood about this talking point.
It's like if the coach is dead set on starting the wrong person, why?
Right.
Why of that's always fascinating to me.
Yeah.
And I don't think some role is going to do that in year one.
I think he's probably he's probably got an idea of what he wants to do.
But it again, he has seemed fairly open minded about Tremel Jones Jr. the entire time, which given the circumstances, you think the job would just get handed air and violence clearly not being handed to him.
So this will be interesting to watch.
Now we're going to talk Alabama, which is not quite the same situation, but it is quarterback you signed at a high school against quarterback who came with the coach.
But Austin Mac has been on Alabama's roster for two seasons now since coming with Caleb and the board from Washington.
So we're going to talk to Charlie Potter from Bama online about that.

How many Keel and Russell questions have you gotten in your daily life since the end of the spring game?
Can you go to the grocery store?
Can you walk out of your house without someone just yelling the name Keel and Russell on the street?
I have avoided it so far.
Keel and Russell.
Keel and Russell.
Yeah, there you go.
It feels like that I guess.
But social media and the message board has been bumping with St. Keel and Russell and that's to be expected.
He had a good scrimmage on Saturday.
So what does that mean for the greater quarterback competition?
Because obviously Keel and Russell is not going to name a starter between Russell and Austin back right now.
But this is my struggle with any spring game performance.
Is that what it looked like in Alabama's case, the other 12 practices they've had or the two they're going to have this week or was that the anomaly?
Yeah, like I have in the past had to temper expectations based off of how players have performed in the A-Day game.
We've seen a guy like a Jay Hall have a huge A-Day game in just a minute.
And we all know how that ended up.
But the thing for Alabama is this time last year they didn't have a game.
They had a practice.
They scrimmaged a little, but it was more just like a regular practice for A-Day.
And then we heard from Ryan Grubb like the following Monday or Tuesday, I believe.
And that's when he said, if we play the game tomorrow or later this week, Tyson's would be the starter.
I don't think he would say that necessarily this week.
You never know with Ryan Grubb.
He likes to name starters just kind of on a whim.
I saw that with Jackson Void earlier this spring.
But I think if you had asked me before the spring, who would be that guy?
I would have been surprised if it had been anybody but Austin Mac.
But now after seeing him for two hours with my own eyeballs, I think this is very a competition between two guys.
It's one of those things where I think it's going to link your well into preseason camp.
But I think the red shirt freshman is firmly in the mix from the job.
Charlie, I live in Dallas and when he was a five star prospect in the area, Dallas was like obsessed with him.
And I don't know if my mindset's just obviously you can ask Andy, my mindset's always changed based on someone's recruiting ranking.
But I always had this thought of wherever he goes, he's going to be awesome.
How is he dealing with the fact that he's now going into a second year and hasn't been named the starter yet?
And what's his general temperament and viewpoint on his placement on Alabama's roster in future?
Yeah, I would love to tell you that we've heard from him this spring.
They haven't made this quarterback's available.
I did talk to Keelan though in LA before the Rose Bowl because I was feeling a bit of ability for that 14 media day.
And he seems like he just has the best head on his shoulders.
He's got a good temperament.
He knows he chose Alabama for a reason and he knows there's a lot of competition.
But I also think he knows the player that he is.
And I think his teammates know that too.
His playmaking ability is what everybody talks about.
It's what you see when he's out there on the field.
I think the biggest thing for Keelan is just minimizing the mistakes.
He's still a young player.
He takes some risks out there.
And so I think for him, it's just minimizing that.
I think he's got a really good grasp of the offense.
You can tell he's learned to play a book.
And it helps being a four year in the system.
But he's the guy that can make a ton of plays.
Make those when you need to make them.
You don't have to throw a home run ball every time.
And so I think we saw some of that from him in the VAA scrimmage.
He didn't make a mistake late with an interception.
And that's what I'm talking about.
I think if he can clean those up, it's a chance where we're talking a lot more about him, maybe being the front runner than firmly in the mix.
>> Andy, I know we're probably going to change the subject here.
But let me put a gun to his head.

It's a ZLVAM quarterback job.

>> Sure.
>> Gun to your head, who's starting game one?
>> I think it's Keeling.
If he keeps this up, I think Austin Mac too.
He's a guy that was limited in the scrimmage.
He did some good things, but it was clear just watching the two of them, how talented Keeling Russell is.
And he's a guy that his teammates have confidence in and I think he has a lot of confidence in himself.
And if he keeps this up, I think he's the guy.
If it's close, you go with the young guy that has a ton of talent.
And I think that's ultimately what will happen.
But we'll see, they got a lot of 7 on 7 to go in the summer.
They got several scrimmages in the fall.
But if he keeps up what he was able to do on Saturday, I like Keeling chances.
>> So Keeling of War got asked about this because they did a goal line section at the end.
And Keeling Russell basically took all the reps. And so he gets asked about it.
Here's what he said about Austin Mac on Saturday.
>> Yeah, we just had to limit Austin just with some stuff.
So just that was why.
So this week was a little bit where Austin, our Keeling got more reps just with some things Austin's going through.
So Austin was good for the most part, but I wasn't able to finish it out.
But it would be fun.
>> So Charlie did he look limited when you saw, because he was playing in, you know, full field scrimmage before that.
>> Yeah, I mean, I had to put on like my high school reporter hat and like keep live stats by hand.
Because we weren't in the press box.
They don't put out stats for any scrimmages.
So it was up to us.
And so what they did before they got to the red zone portion, which was the last like six drives of the game.
They had 10 drives.
And it was Austin Mac comes out first with the ones.
Here comes Keeling with the two.
So then they flip.
So they get two drives a piece.
Then they did like a drive with the three.
They did that again where Austin Mac comes out.
Place with the ones, Russell with the two, they flip it.
So they got four drives a piece, two each with the ones, two each with the two's.
And look, I know they're in black jerseys.
There's black, no contact jerseys means like, you know, don't touch the player.
No hitting the quarterback especially.
But he didn't look limited in those, you know, four possessions that he had.
Now granted, a lot of them weren't as long as Keeling Russell's because they either stalled out or they attempted to fill goal.
But he looked pretty good.
Look, he looked, I didn't notice anything.
And then he came out and he actually led the first red zone drive.
And so from that point on, he watched from the sideline.
He wasn't getting any kind of attention from Jeff Allen or the trainers.
So it was a little odd and I understand people think you might, oh, they're just giving a ton of reps to Keeling late.
But I do believe that, you know, they're being cautious.
It's the spring.
You don't want to ruin anything.
They saw a guy get carted off earlier in the scrimmage.
So I think it was a cautionary thing for the coaching staff.
But it was a little odd because just from where we were sitting, Austin Mac didn't look very limited.
I don't know what the injury is, but he's a guy that like that throw to Ryan Coleman Williams on the money.
Didn't look like he had any kind of limitations there.
It was just a little bit strange to hear that from Keeling.
You know, I think we did find out too, like last year at this time when the Tyson Simpson comment was made, they're like, oh, no, wow, we were kind of caught off guard and then Tyson Simpson turned out to be an awesome player.
It sounds like both of these guys would have them in a pretty good position, but it also was a really important year for Bama and obviously, Caitlin to bore.
How much do you think placement, expectations, all these things play a factor into like who is more poised to take Alabama into a critical season?
I mean, I think they like both of the guys.
It's clear like they didn't go out and get a transfer.
They didn't lose any of them.
So it's one of those things where I think they like the chances they have with both Austin Mac and Keeling Russell.
So I don't know how much bearing the season will have on the decision.
I think how these guys continue to perform a practice and these scrimmages will.
And look, I mean, the thing with Keeling Russell has been his leadership, his command at the offense.
And how has that been because I think Austin Mac probably has a little bit of a head start on him just because he's older, more experience is more comfortable with the system.
But it sounds like Keeling's taken that next step too.
So I really think it's, it is a two-player competition.
Like last year, especially after spring, it wasn't so much of a battle per se between the three players, Ty and Austin and Keeling.
This one's a true competition.
I think it's when I think they would like to name a starter.
I think like a couple of weeks before the season starts after that second pre-season scrimmage.
But it could be one that lingers too.
So I don't think it's, you know, Keeling's sitting in his office and saying, you know, what guy's going to give us the best opportunity.
I think that's a given and the pressure that Alabama feels.
I don't think the quarterback battle or whatever has much bearing on that.
Well, and one thing that may be as important as the quarterback competition is how they set up their offensive line.
Obviously that's a huge area of concern coming out of last season.
They replace their O-line coach, their tight ends coach.
They bring in a bunch of new offensive linemen.
They let people go through the portal.
I have Debora talking about the offensive line and I want to get your take on something he said toward the end of here.
So here's, here's Keeling to bore on the offensive line.
Offensive line wise, what I do feel is that they're their communication.
Their their their technique and execution is getting better and it's not something that happens overnight.
They'll continue to work.
Still got a whole week ahead of us of practice and we'd expect them to get better.
Think from the center on out though, the communication guys are on the same page.
Not a lot of guys.
Buston assignments.
It's going to happen here and there still in the spring.
New faces in certain spots, but I thought for the most part, you know, we're getting a play off to a good start here in the early stages of spring.
So I talked to Josh Quavis at the senior goal and Josh was starting tight in for Alabama last year.
And he said the biggest problem with their blocking was communication, Charlie.
How important has that been to get that fix?
Yeah, I think it's critical, especially with so many new faces.
And I think that is, I don't want to say it's surprising that they're kind of talking highly about it this spring.
But bringing in a guy like racing Del Gaudi, the transfer from Cal Poly, he's kind of really introduced himself as the center.
He's the anchor, the signal caller, the guy that does that communication up front.
And look, Parker Belsford's one of the biggest losses for this team.
I got to enter the draft a year early and you just wonder another kind of small center coming from the small school.
How does that translate?
It sounds like it's translated well.
And then you've got new guys that left tackle with Jackson Lloyd Stepanand.
Left guard still kind of up in the air because they've had injuries to guys that are going to be in the mix there.
And then you're kind of moving things around that right guard and right tackle with Michael Carroll moving from tackle to guard.
And then Javon James coming over from Mississippi State.
There's just so many like new and moving pieces on that offensive line that to hear that is doing well from a communication standpoint is big.
But I think yes, communication is important, but the execution has to be there too.
And they did some decent things on Saturday, but the run game still work in progress.
They have to get that going.
I think that starts up front as run backs are going to be a big part of the two.
But this offensive line has to be better at that.
And it wasn't great on Saturday.
I will say just from a, you know, an onlooker point of view.
But I think that this group is it's I didn't expect the run game to look like, you know, 2015 with with Derek Henry.
It's a situation where they've got so many new guys that it's going to take some time to gel and come together.
And it sounds though like for me communication and the chemistry standpoint that is coming along.
Charlie, before we started recording here, I was working on a list of 10 players with breakout potential for next year.
And I almost put Ryan Williams on there, but I didn't because he kind of was already broken out.
I mean, I feel like you can't break out if you're on the cover of the NCAA video game.
But I do think that his season last year was kind of weird.
What happened with him last year and what are your expectations for him coming?
Because obviously, you know, his performance has a huge impact on whoever wins that quarterback battle.
I think it's a, it's a couple things.
One, like obviously, I think some of us mental because he had 10 drops.
I think that's the third most of any wider receiver at the FDS level.
You can't have that.
But he also, I think, was dealing with some injuries and I think he's healthy now.
He's added some way.
When a Thai Simpson talked to reporters after his pro day workout, which Ryan was out there running routes for him.
He was surprised by how much bigger he's gotten.
And I think that will help Ryan.
I think as a true freshman, he might not even weigh like 160 pounds.
So he's a guy that that's added some mass to his wound.
And I think that he's a guy that he made some nice plays in the scrimmage and he's someone they need to step up, especially if no erudgers is down for a while.
So it's a, it's a big year for Ryan.
I think he knows that.
And I think he's a really attacked the soft season of that mindset.
And so far, you know, he's had a really good spring.
I know there were some like videos that came out of that pro day, which Brandon.
I was on the way to Chicago for the NCAA tournament.
So I wasn't a part of this.
But I feel like dropping a pass when a Thai Simpson was throwing passes to him.
Well, then like two days later at their first scrimmage, he goes off and scores three touchdowns.
And he's a guy that is capable of making huge plays.
And I think this offense needs that for them.
And I expect him to have a big year.
Like when no German Bernard, they need, I was about to say to now he's in number one.
They need one to step up this fall in a big way.
And I think he's pretty poised for that.
Ryan Coleman Williams, big, big potential season.
But yeah, it's, it's been a strange career so far for him.
You can't have a better first five or six games of your freshman year.
And then just weird since then.
But it's going to be fun to watch what he can do.
And it will depend on on who's throwing on the ball.
I guess but Charlie Potter.
I know it doesn't stop the grind never ends in Alabama.
And he's got two more spring practices this week.

All right, because it's such a strange situation.
You don't usually see someone break out immediately like that.
And then kind of go into a shell for an extended period of time.
And then it was interesting is he's the best quote on this team.
And they're happy to bring him out for interviews.
And he almost feels like the team spokesman.
Like we hear from him.
The most he's got to he's got to contribute.
Commence it to that.
And he definitely has the talent to do it.
It's just a matter of putting it all together.
Yeah, very weird season because you know that like at any point he can pop off for 200 yards and a few touchdowns.
And like drops are a thing that some receivers have to work through and stuff.
But like I don't understand why drops would also stop him from being so electric.
Like there were times where we were watching Pamela's cheerware didn't even feel like he was on the field.
Like there was one game.
I think it was the those the Auburn game when we were in Detroit watching it together.
It was like is Ryan even on the field.
Yeah, you asked that question.
Yeah.
And like I just I don't know how that is possible.
And I don't think it can be possible this year.
Obviously the offensive line working through some things fixing that hordered running game from a year ago.
Obviously our main tenants of Alabama football repairs this off season.
But I just don't think that Alabama will be where it wants to be at the end of next year of Ryan Williams doesn't have a great year.
I just don't see.
Yeah.
And like you saw with the freshman in the spring game like they've got some very large freshman receivers just physically huge.
And Ryan Williams obviously different physically than that.
But they seem to have a good mix of players in the past game.
And if you know we'll see with Russell or Mack who winds up throwing the ball.
If it's Russell.
Some of your run game that be taken care of by the quarterback as well.
So that maybe and then maybe that factors into decision as you go forward.
Like we said with Florida.
John Someral wants to get the offensive line straightened out first.
That maybe what came into war wants to to.
He may want to know what his line is going to be and have an idea of how good his line will be at run blocking before he makes a decision because.
My guess is if he thinks they're not going to be great run blockers.
That you probably want to go with Russell.
Because he's going to give you a better chance of having a productive run game.
Because of that speed he can you know if he.
Yeah.
The pocket or you can run design runs with him.
So I'm fascinated to see how that all shakes out.
Sticking in the SEC though.
There's a game we've talked about over and over again in September week three.
That.
I just can't wait for it's every soap opera aspect of college football that you want.
Converging into one game in Oxford Mississippi when LSU goes to Ole Miss.
And remember part of the reason.
There was so much anger for Lane Kiffin leaving Ole Miss in the middle of a playoff run to go to LSU.
Is that this already was a rivalry.
I realize that people outside of those two fan bases may not realize how big of a rivalry it is.
But I want to point you to the baseball series this weekend.
We got some video that came out of the baseball series.
You probably seen this online.
LSU fan in the outfield hanging with the Ole Miss students.
He's being escorted out of the game.
I don't know what he's done to this point.
But he's being escorted out because it apparently it's not going well.
Someone throws a beer at him.
And he slugs somebody.
Now, we have multiple angles of the video.
The person he punches is not the person who threw the beer.
It's just a bad place to be.
Wrong place for a long time, Andy.
The person he put like this punch from this LSU fan is tremendous though.
He's a Southpaugh.
And when he gets, he, now look, I don't think the guy is ready to defend himself because he's not the person who threw the beer.
So he's not expecting this.
But this is a *** of a straight left.
You just said, boom.
Have you ever been *** in the face like that before?
Not like that.
I don't know what that would be.
I actually feel like I'd like to be going out if you're hit like that.

But I do think that this type of thing is usually something that we see in Philadelphia Eagles stands.

But the one I think throws the beer, if you look at the last angle, you see this person shrinking back like Homer Simpson into the hedge.

And then this poor dude who had nothing to do with the beer probably had something to say because I think he was right in front of the guy.
Just getting smoked with the left *** because if you're the guy who threw the beer, then you cower away.
And then someone else takes the shot that you were meant for.

If you're a person who would throw a beer to do like that and then just slink away.

So Lane deleted this because I think you probably knew it was going to get thrown back his face a lot in September.
You got to say deleting a tweet is also a pointless if you're somebody that famous.
Like it's been reached out a million times by this point.

I cannot be more excited for like.
So here's my thinking are you because we're going to have some serious arm wrestling matches here at on three about who gets to cover that game.
I don't know that we're going to win those are my.

So anyway, this is one of the most anticipated regular season college football games of my entire career in terms of two good teams.
Two coaches with amazing storylines and then of course the interconnected storyline, which is one left one school for the other in very *** ways.
So it's going to be fun to see like that baseball fight.
It shows you a little bit of the intensity of this rivalry and obviously both of those fan bases care deeply about college baseball too.
So it's not.
This is not just because of anything that happened with Lane Kiffin.
They already hated each other.
In college baseball, they've hated each other in football.
Like they hate each other period.
But that again, underscores how intense this is going to be with Lane Kiffin leaving.
We talked about it so much when it happened, but it's still.
When I think back on it, Ari, he left in the middle of a playoff run just left.
Yeah, every time you try to go back and think about it and make it not that big of a deal because if there's been months to like simmer down, you just go back and realize, oh, yeah, that was a pretty big deal.
The other thing that I will say Andy and like I don't know much about college baseball, although I think my alma mater won a college world series in the not so distant past, right?
Didn't there's on a win one like.

If you throw beer on anybody under any circumstance, you're probably going to get *** in the face, right?

I saw that with the Colorado spring game this weekend.
And it's this group of accounts that all that that all do this.
One of them posted a video of the first people out of the locker room.
For Colorado to warm up for the spring game.
And talking about how tiny they are and they're going to get destroyed in it.
And people on the internet just took off with this took off running.
Guys, it's the specialist.
Those are going to be the smallest people on the team.
You saw no 50 60 and 70 numbers.
I assure you Colorado has large humans on the team.
I assure you in fairness though.
Those look like small specialists too.
I know what most punt returners and kick returners are small people like you.
Yeah, you don't have six four 220 pound receivers doing that.
Yeah, that's not the size of the team.
Yeah.
And I know what I hate to is like we also get accused of rage baiting all the time.
And we don't.
And then you see accounts like that that actually are real race bait.
Like we don't engage in this ever.
Now I have unpopular opinions as do you.
And we share those opinions quite frequently.
But like it's not designed to make people angry or to humiliate somebody like that.
So, you know, I think that Colorado is probably facing an uphill battle of being very good this year.
And I don't think that that clip is the reason why.

It's like to make sure to your own Instagram with you with the four chins like it's like not everybody always looks good and every.
You post the ones of you that look good.
