Get through the debut last weekend, what's it like going out for your second outing, you know, given all the family stuff, the jitters and everything, just settling into being Major League starter?
Yeah, I am- felt, felt back to normal.
Yeah, just, hard, hard, hard game.
Lost today, but, yeah, body feels good.
Just a little disappointed.
Seemed like some of the guys were getting on your pitch count a little bit.
Just how, how much of a grind were some of those at bats there against the Blue Jays?
Yeah, I think you give, you give Big League hitters credit.
You know, they're good hitters, they fought.
There were some at bats that I wish I could've got back.
But yeah.
That's it.
Leave with the lead.
Just how tough was it with the walk and the single to kind of finish it, I think?
Yeah, I, I mean, yeah, it, it doesn't feel great by any means.
Gave the team a chance to win.
That's all you can ask for at the end of the day.
And, but yeah, at the end, I wish I could've done a little bit better.
Cade, they, they've kept you kind of at 80 pitches all season.
How much is in, in your mind when you're, especially in a Big League game, you're trying to be efficient, but you, you wanna stay in there as long as you can, but you know that that limit's coming up, especially 'cause you, you know, having to get 100 at LSU.
Right.
I think that, what everything, whatever they're doing is for a reason.
And, this is for the longevity of, of my career, and, we're not looking to just on this season.
I wanna pitch for the Mariners for a really long time.
And, I understand that and, obviously it hurts getting taken out, but I feel like I have the mindset to where, the, Dan Wilson and the pitching guys really aren't taking me out.
It's, it's really a reflection on, probably pulling myself out based on, the environment and based on, the situation I have.
Do you, do you feel like you're able to just stay pitch to pitch though?
You don't have that in the back of your mind of, "Oh man, I gave 25 pitches in this inning.
I gotta get quick one" or- Yeah, I, I have the mindset of, when they give me the ball, I'm going for as long as I can until they take that ball away from me.
And, when you have that mindset, it really just kind of takes, you know, all that little stuff kind of off your plate.
There was that one jam, I think it was the fourth inning.
Cal comes out to the mound to visit.
What did he say to you, and how did that help you calm you down a little bit?
Yeah, I think, Cal does a really good job with, and he's helped me a lot with this far and, he real- he's really just trying to get my breath.
Like, take a deep breath and kind of get back to, pitch by pitch like you said.
And, but yeah, just kind of give a little deep breath right there.
That catch that Josh made down the first base line, you know, obviously gets you out of that jam that was kind of brewing.
But what did you see on that play, and how much did you appreciate that help?
No, yeah, it helps out a lot.
We got a really good defense behind us and, at the same time, I, I try to have the mindset of, we- it's nine on one.
And, I feel really confident with the guys out there.
Naylor made a good play and he's been doing that all season, so it's no real surprise to me.
Cade, first at bat for spring, you had a really good day yesterday.
First pitch kind of went up and in a little bit.
Some people thought maybe you were trying to send a message or set a tone there to be aggressive in that at bat.
Was that something that you were trying to do, get him off the plate a little bit or just- No kind of one slipped a little bit?
No, I wish I had that elite command like that- but, no, I, I, I accidentally missed.
And, yeah, I just, there's no har- no bad feelings by any means.
I respect everyone.
And, understand that it was an accident on this.
Cade, you stacked eight, eight righties after, after Bateman.
I mean, obviously you probably faced some of that in your career.
It doesn't feel like you are intimidated by the fact you got a whole bunch of right-handers.
You feel like you got the weapons to handle it?
No, no doubt.
I, I, last year in college, I had reverse splits, so honestly it is kind of an advantage in, in some ways.
You utilized the changeup a good amount, but also use li- utilized the slider a lot too.
Yeah.
We kind of thought maybe it was gonna be more changeup heavy.
What'd you like in the slider today?
Yeah, I think, the, the shape has been really good the last two outings and, just really just trying to have a steady mix and being able to throw any pitch in any count, that's the definition of pitching.
And, just, just understanding that, each hitter's different and understanding the plan that I have.
