Welcome everybody.
This is Sports Illustrated Football Club, and we're here in the studio to talk about World Cup history.
And personally today, my favorite topic, the ultimate surprises of the tournament.
We had some great team over the years.

Brian, I'm gonna start with you.
Your favorite overperformance, your favorite surprise in the World Cup history.
I think it's Cameroon 1990.
This was obviously not the top achievement of an African nation.
Morocco reached semi-finals only 4 years ago, but African football evolved a lot over the last 30-40 years, and I think that there is a lot of merit for Morocco, of course, and, and what they did.
But now people expect African teams to perform.
Nobody expected Cameroon to perform in 1990.
It was the first time that an African nation reached that far in a World Cup.
They beat Argentina in the opening match of that World Cup, and I think that they shocked the world.
Surprising Cameron in 1990.

Yes, finally, finally, once you agree.
Yes is the short answer, although uh honorable mentions to Croatia in 191998 for being, you know, a new country, essentially.
Plenty of talent though.
Exactly, and Turkey coming from nowhere in 2002 and then going back to nowhere thereafter.
But uh Cameroon in 1990 , and I, I don't think I'd ever seen Cameroon play football before this.
And their first game where they beat Argentina, which I'm surprised you, you went for them on the, on the basis of that happening, but that was one of the most incredible games of football ever, and I remember Claudio Canigia going about 30 m up in the air when he was fouled by a Cameroon player.
I mean, Cameroon finished with like 9 players, you know, it's just the, the whole thing was just absolute chaos and amazing theater.
But as the, as the tournament progresses and everyone thought, oh wow, you know, this isn't just one game, you know, they topped the group, if I, if I remember correctly.
Um, and then they start to win through.
And then you've got, uh, Roger Millier, the, the forward who at 38, scores two goals in a game and he goes and dances by the corner flag, and this just becomes one of the sort of captivating, uh, images of the entire World Cup.
And actually, even though being English, I was , you know, very relieved that England beat Cameroon in the, in the quarterfinals.
Actually, the, you know, England were kind of fortunate with two of those penalties.
It could easily have been Cameroon.
Uh, who got through to the, uh, to the semi-finals, but pure joy and it was just, it was just such fun.
Since you are agreeing here, I'm gonna have my say, summer 2002, me and my friend playing the whole summer, every afternoon, Brazil, Turkey, and my team was Turkey, IldiRay Basturk, Rustu, Ilan Mansi.
So nice memory, nice surprises.
