A Chicago White Sox trade target just cleared a massive hurdle before the trade deadline at a perfect time.
Clay Holmes, right-handed pitcher of the New York Mets, appears ready to return to Major League Baseball and ready to be traded.
The 33-year-old former All-Star closer of the New York Yankees has been a quality member of the Mets starting rotation for the last two years.
40 starts, he's 16 and 12 with a 3.26 ERA.
That ERA 2.39 in 2026.
Great at ground balls, great at missing barrels, great at inducing chases out of the strike zone.
And with the Mets bona fide sellers, Holmes is pretty much guaranteed to be moved at the deadline.
He's a rental because it's unlikely he'll be picking up his player option for 2027.
Given the production, of course, the market is going to be heavy.
Teams want Clay Holmes, and the White Sox are one of those teams.
The rumor last week that the White Sox were one of the teams eyeing Holmes, that they had sent Nick Hostetler to go and scout Holmes, that they are looking at this guy as a viable option for them to fill a rotation need at the trade deadline, and the big question has just been the health.
Holmes broke his leg earlier this season when he was hit with a 111 mile per hour line drive.
He's been on the injured list ever since, and now he's finally rehabbing.
His last rehab assignment finally went well.
The first one, two and a third for the Triple A Syracuse Mets, two earned runs, 51 pitches.
But on July 28th, Holmes down in Single A St. Lucie, 40, 59 pitches to get through four scoreless innings for Holmes.
Scouts in attendance said that Holmes was looking big league ready.
The White Sox, one of six teams with scouts at the game.
So the market is certain to be strong here.
That could drive up the price.
But what's also strong is the White Sox need for starting pitching.
They're sitting on a first place club.
Chris Getz knows that they need help, and maybe seeing Clay Holmes in a rehab assignment pitching well, is going to be the boost that Chicago needs to get this thing over the hump and get a deal done
