Why France and Portugal are World Cup Favourites

With talents like Mbappé, Dembélé, Saliba, and Konaté, France's squad is like a FIFA Ultimate Team. But don't count out Portugal, whose midfield and attacking options might even see Cristiano Ronaldo become a super sub.

If squad depth really will win the World Cup for someone, who is it going to be?

Well, the first option is France.

Everywhere you look, there is an insane amount of talent.

Take the attacking players, for example.

You've got Doue, Akliouche, Thuram, Cherki, all of them not even starting, backups to Dembele, Mbappe, and Michael Olise.

And don't even get me started on the fact that one of Saliba, Konate, or Upamecano will be sat on the bench.

I mean, the squad reads like the FIFA Ultimate Team of someone who has way too many coins.

But if that was too much of an obvious choice, what about Portugal?

And spoiler alert, I think their best 11 might not include Cristiano.

For starters, the midfield is in every way imaginable the best midfield of the World Cup.

Vitinha and Joao Neves provide an excellent engine room, and the creative genius of Bruno Fernandes makes him the main man.

With Francisco Conceicao, Rafa Leao, Pedro Neto, Bernardo Silva, Joao Felix, Goncalo Ramos all providing a wealth of options for Roberto Martinez to choose from, Ronaldo may find himself as a super sub.

But my word, what a super sub to have.
