Wild's Guerin On How Makar's Extension Impacts Hughes: 'Quinn Might Be After Different Things'
After Cale Makar signed a massive eight-year extension with the Colorado Avalanche, Minnesota Wild defenseman Quinn Hughes' next contract has come into the spotlight. Wild GM Bill Guerin isn't concerned about where their negotiations currently stand.

Michael Traikos, does Makar's contract impact what Quinn Hughes is going to get?
Yes and no.
Like, we gotta remember, Makar signed for eight years, and is probably gonna be the last player to sign an eight-year contract because, you know, that feature gets eliminated in September.
So, you know, if the Wild are willing to, or if Quinn Hughes is willing to, you know, set roots in Minnesota and sign for seven years, sure.
I think the Makar contract acts as a very good kinda template.
But from all what we're hearing is he kinda wants to match up with Jack Hughes, and if that's the case, we could be talking about, you know, I forget what the years are, but, like, something closer to four or five years.
Um- you- you're not gonna be paying Quinn Hughes $20 million if you're only getting him for four or five years.
I, I think it, you know, that value drops significantly.
You know, obviously Minnesota, they probably would love to have Quinn Hughes, but again, if you're Minnesota, can you pay Hughes 20 million and Kaprizov 20 million?
Again, you're running into the same problems that Colorado's going to be running into- in a couple of years.
And again, you know, we're still at that point where there hasn't been a single Stanley Cup-winning team with a player earning more than $10 million on its roster.
That's obviously gonna change because we are getting higher and higher with salaries, but it kinda goes to the point where you need balance more than you need one or two players carrying the mail.
