AirPods Max 2 Adds New Features but Is It Enough to Upgrade

Apple has officially introduced the AirPods Max 2, bringing a range of updates that focus more on internal improvements and smarter features than a full redesign. While the overall look remains unchanged from the original model, most of the upgrades come from Apple's move to the newer H2 chip, which powers several of the headphone's new capabilities.
The addition of the H2 chip allows Apple to expand its growing list of adaptive audio features. One of the more notable is Adaptive Audio, which automatically adjusts the balance between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode depending on your surroundings. Instead of manually switching between modes, the headphones handle it in the background, aiming to create a more seamless listening experience.
Another new feature is Conversation Awareness, which lowers your music and reduces surrounding noise when you start speaking to someone nearby. It's designed to make quick interactions easier without having to remove the headphones. Apple is also introducing Live Translation, powered by Apple Intelligence, which allows users to communicate across different languages in real time during in-person conversations.
Call quality has also been improved with Voice Isolation, which uses computational audio processing to prioritize your voice while minimizing background noise. On top of that, Personalized Volume automatically adjusts listening levels based on both your environment and your typical volume preferences.

Apple says the new AirPods Max 2 offer up to 1.5 times more effective active noise cancellation compared to the previous generation. Transparency mode has also been refined to sound more natural when letting in outside noise. Despite these improvements, battery life remains the same, with Apple rating the headphones at up to 20 hours of use with noise cancellation enabled.
The headphones continue to use a USB-C port for charging and wired audio playback. When connected via USB-C, they support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio, provided you're using a compatible device running iOS 18.4 or newer. For wireless use, Apple has upgraded connectivity to Bluetooth 5.3, replacing the Bluetooth 5.0 standard found in the previous model.
Color options remain the same, including Midnight, Starlight, Orange, Purple, and Blue. One small but interesting addition is a Camera Remote feature, which lets you use the Digital Crown on the headphones to take photos or start and stop video recording when paired with an iPhone or iPad.
The AirPods Max 2 will be available to order starting March 25 in the U.S. and more than 30 other countries, with availability expected in early April. Pricing remains unchanged at $549, matching the previous generation, which Apple has now discontinued.
