Marvel Super Heroes Precon Face Commanders Ranked
Recently, Magic: The Gathering's Marvel Super Heroes commander precons and their respective face commanders have been revealed. This universes beyond set will have four precons themed around The Fantastic Four, The Avengers, Black Panther, and Doctor Doom. With that said, I'll be sharing my rankings of each of the revealed face commanders.
I'll be ranking each face commander based on how well their abilities fit their character from the comics. Additionally, my rankings will also be influenced based on how interesting these commanders are. The following is my rankings of each of the Marvel Super Heroes commander precon face commanders that's been revealed lately:
4. Doctor Doom, King of Latveria
Wizards of the Coast
In last place on my ranking is Doctor Doom, King of Latveria who helms the Villain-themed Doom Prevails precon. While I was initially excited for a precon themed around Doctor Doom, I feel like his abilities are lacking in comparison to the set's other face commanders. I think Doctor Doom being Grixis-colored fits his character from the comics well. He's a brilliant scientist and sorcerer that's prone to being petty, especially towards his rival, Reed Richards.
This card having connive fits Doctor Doom's theme of being the conniving genius super villain well. I assume getting to choose which villain gains menace and connives is to allow you to use this ability on his Doom Bots. However, requiring you to specifically discard lands to make each opponent lose 2 life just felt somewhat weird for me. Additionally, it makes it so that you don't get the +1/+1 counter from conniving if you choose to discard a land card instead. Maybe making you choose between making your opponents lose 2 life or making your villain stronger is supposed to be some 200IQ type play, but it doesn't suit a genius like Doom who's supposed to be a super-genius.
3. Captain America, Team Leader
Wizards of the Coast
In third place on my list is Captain America, Team Leader, who is the face commander of the Jeskai-colored Avengers Assemble deck. This card's abilities aren't that interesting overall, since its pretty much just a way to buff the rest of your hero creatures. However, I think it really suits the overall theme of who Captain America is as a hero. He's the hero in the Marvel Universe who inspires the other heroes to action and makes them better. Additionally, while he's capable as an individual, he gets better when he has a team to work with and lead. In that regard, I think Captain America, Team Leader's abilities, while somewhat boring, fit the character from the comics pretty well.
It's because of this that I'm ranking Captain America, Team Leader above Doctor Doom, but I feel that the other commanders above have more interesting card designs compared to him.
2. T'Challa, the Black Panther
Wizards of the Coast
In second place on my list is the Wakanda Forever precon's face commander, T'Challa, the Black Panther. Among the heroes on this list, Black Panther is my personal favorite. However, I'm a bit disappointed that he's still Selesnya-colored like his Secret Lair variant. I personally think that he should be in Bant or at least Simic, because aside from being empowered naturally by the Heart-Shaped Herb, T'Challa is also one of the smartest people on earth in the Marvel comics.
Still, I'm ranking him in second because his abilities are interesting for a card that's in Selesnya's colors. Usually, the green and white color pair isn't something that's associated with artifacts. However, this card's abilities require you to deckbuild around artifacts to get the most out of it.
T'Challa's abilities help you ramp whenever he enters or attacks because it generates a Vibranium token that can be tapped for colorless mana. Afterwards, he gets stronger whenever you cast expensive artifact spells. I think this fits the Black Panther well because Wakanda is a pretty technologically advanced nation that's developed rapidly.
Overall, I really want to see the other cards in the Wakanda Forever precon and how it supports T'Challa because an artifact-based Selesnya deck is fairly unique in this colors.
1. The Fantastic Four
Wizards of the Coast

Finally, at the top of my rankings is The Fantastic Four as a whole, who helm the sans-black precon named after them. I personally think Wizards of the Coast hit a homerun in how they designed each Fantastic Four member. All of them have an ability that's associated with the color required to cast them. Additionally, each of them has a secondary, more powerful ability that requires you to pay sans-black mana to trigger the effect. I assume this is supposed to represent them when they're working together as a team.
If that was Wizards of the Coast's intention when they designed these cards, then they did a fantastic job. Because of how well designed each member of The Fantastic Four are, they're my favorite overall design among the Marvel Super Heroes precon face commanders.
This wraps up my ranking for each Marvel Super Heroes precon face commanders. The set will come out in June later this year.
