Allure of the Seas' Island Day Gives Way to Rough Seas

Cruisers often look forward to their time at Perfect Day at CocoCay as a highlight of a Bahamas or Caribbean cruise, but sometimes, even when it's on a cruise's itinerary, those dreams get dashed.

The private island offers beaches, water slides, and a relaxed day ashore that many build their vacation around. It is the type of port day that provides a little bit of everything for whoever steps on shore.

When weather steps in, those plans can change quickly, turning what was meant to be a port day into extra time at sea.

On the October 25–November 1, 2026 sailing aboard Allure of the Seas, guests received word that the ship would not be docking at Perfect Day at CocoCay as scheduled. The captain and cruise director announced 50 mph winds with waves breaking over the pier at the destination.

The ship approached the area but was unable to dock and instead turned toward San Juan, Puerto Rico for an earlier arrival of 8 a.m. instead of 10:30 a.m. This created an additional full sea day.

The original itinerary called for a late departure from Miami on Sunday, October 25, a call at Nassau on Monday, October 26, Perfect Day CocoCay on Tuesday, October 27, a sea day on Wednesday, October 28, San Juan on Thursday, October 29, Puerto Plata on Friday, October 30, another sea day on Saturday, October 31, and return to Miami on Sunday, November 1.

What Happened at Perfect Day on Allure of the Seas

The captain and cruise director made an announcement that there were 50 mph winds, and the waves were breaking over the pier at Perfect Day. The ship actually went all the way there but didn't dock. It is currently headed toward San Juan for an earlier morning arrival on Thursday, October 28. I am on this sailing and can attest that I was not surprised for the change in itinerary given how rough the waters have been and the recent changes in itineraries for other ships sailing to Bahamas.

The cruise director shared part of the update with guests: "We will not be able to make our stop at Perfect Day instead the captain is turning the ship directly toward San Juan and hopefully get us out of the front that has been staying over top of us. We will have a full day at sea. We are putting together a full day at sea with things to do including additional activities while on the ship."

To make the most of the unexpected sea day, Allure of the Seas is adding activities for guests. One highlight is a "Meet the Stunt Man" session hosted with the cruise director. He will share stories from more than 20 years as an actor and stuntman in Hollywood, show movie clips, and answer questions about his experiences both in Hollywood and at sea.

The pool deck was closed early in the morning on Tuesday, the 27th but opened up late morning after moving away from Perfect Day CocoCay.

Some of the specialty restaurants that are not usually open on sea days are now opening including Izumi- Royal Caribbean's sushi and hibachi restaurant, Giovanni's, an Italian inspired venue and other favorites. Gift shops, Casino Royale and Vitality Spa will remain open for enjoyment.

A Pattern of Weather Adjustments Across Royal Caribbean Ships

This weather-related adjustment on Allure of the Seas is part of a broader pattern affecting several Royal Caribbean ships this week.

Harmony of the Seas was also scheduled to call at Perfect Day on Tuesday, October 27, but has already seen its itinerary shifted even before sailing due to rough weather in the Bahamas and has now been shifted again to avoid Perfect Day and its weather.

Utopia of the Seas, leaving from Port Canaveral on October 26, was alerted just hours before departure and is now heading to Cozumel, Mexico, instead of its Bahamas stops, according to Cruise Hive . Royal Caribbean's meteorology team has been closely monitoring conditions to prioritize safety when winds and seas make docking unsafe.

This has also affected sailings from up north, where cruisers had a really different type of cruise—shifting from the Bahamas to Canada. Independence of the Seas, departing from Cape Liberty, New Jersey on October 24, 2026, for what was originally a 5-night Bermuda cruise, was rerouted to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, with an overnight there instead. The change was due to Subtropical Storm Josephine bringing rough waters and gale-force conditions off the East Coast.

How Royal Caribbean Guests Can Plan for Adjustment in Itinerary

For cruisers on Allure of the Seas, the shift means more time onboard with enhanced programming while the ship makes its way to San Juan. It's another reminder that while itineraries are planned carefully, weather can prompt last-minute adjustments even on sailings that have already begun.

Cruisers preparing for cruises during active weather seasons can build in flexibility by checking the Royal Caribbean app and email frequently for updates.

Prepaid excursions are typically automatically refunded as onboard credit when ports are skipped. Packing a few extra options for sea days — books, games, or spa time — helps when plans change in the moment.

Travel insurance that covers itinerary disruptions is worth considering for peace of mind.

Royal Caribbean and other lines emphasize that the ship itself is one of the safest places during rough weather because it can move to avoid the worst conditions. Last-minute or in-the-moment changes happen from time to time; staying informed and keeping expectations adaptable makes the experience smoother.
