MSC Cruises is Moving Into the 'Beach Club' Space—and Freeport is the Next Stop

If you thought the race for the ultimate private shore day was limited to Royal Caribbeanand Carnival, think again. MSC Groupis doubling down on its Bahamian footprint with a massive new project that aims to turn a long-dormant resort area into a high-end sanctuary for its guests.

The group has officially reached an agreement to acquire a 20-acre slice of the Grand Lucayan Resortin Freeport, with plans to transform the former Reef Village area into the MSC Beach Club.

The Rise of the 'Elite' Shore Day

The "MSC Beach Club" isn't just a patch of sand; it's a strategic move to offer a more controlled, resort-style experience. While Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserveis famous for its "eco-chic" vibe and pristine conservation, the new Freeport club is set to cater to guests from both MSC Cruisesand the brand's luxury line, Explora Journeys.

This puts MSC in direct competition with the "club" concepts that have recently dominated the region:

• While the Royal Beach Club Paradise Islandin Nassau just set the bar in late 2025, the line is already moving on its next two massive "Club" projects. The Royal Beach Club Cozumelis officially slated for a 2026 debut, featuring a "street market" and hands-on cooking classes. But the real game-changer is the Royal Beach Club Santorini, opening in Summer 2026. This will be the first of its kind in Europe, designed to alleviate island congestion by giving Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises guests an exclusive home base while they explore the blue-domed churches of Oia.

• Carnival's Celebration Keyis a massive Grand Bahama project that officially opened its gates in July 2025. While it's already the "talk of the fleet," the real news for 2026 is the expansion of Pearl Cove Beach Club. This exclusive, adults-only (18+) retreat features an 11,000-square-foot heated infinity pool, a private beach with pink-striped umbrellas, and a full-service restaurant. To keep up with the summer 2026 demand, Carnival is also adding a second pier, which will allow four "Excel Class" ships (like the Mardi Gras and Celebration ) to dock at once, essentially doubling the island's capacity just in time for the peak season.

• Norwegian Cruise Line's Great Stirrup Cay. The island just debuted the Great Life Lagoon, a 1.4-acre heated pool area with two swim-up bars, alongside a new adults-only Vibe Shore Club. But the real "splash" is coming in summer 2026 with the debut of the Great Tides Waterpark, a six-acre complex featuring 19 waterslides and an 800-foot "dynamic river."

A $450 Million Anchor in Freeport

The beach club is only the "front porch" of a much larger investment. MSC is planning a broader $450 million developmentcentered on Billy Cayin Freeport Harbor. Here's the breakdown of what that day on shore will look like:

• A New Cruise Hub:$400 million is earmarked for a dedicated terminal complex, complete with new berths, a welcome plaza, and enough retail and dining to make you forget you're at a port.

• Infrastructure Boost:Another $50 million will go toward upgrading the existing harbor facilities and transportation links to ensure "frictionless" travel to the new beach club.

'A Defining Moment'

Construction is slated to kick off almost immediately, with a start date of April 12. Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davishighlighted the significance of the deal, stating in a release : "This agreement represents a defining moment for Grand Bahamas and the future of our island. The redevelopment of the Grand Lucayan Resort has long been a national priority."

Gianluca Suprani, President of CTL Maritime (MSC's infrastructure arm), emphasized the long-term vision: "As a family-owned company, we take a long-term view and when we commit to projects of this nature, we do so with the intention and capability to deliver, focused on creating lasting value."
