Rough Seas Cause Major Delays for 3 Cruise Ships at PortMiami

Cruise passengers sailing from PortMiami faced an unexpected weather-related complication to navigate on Oct. 27 as high winds and rough seas disrupted ship schedules across South Florida.

Three cruise ships experienced significant delays returning to Miami, pushing back plans for passengers preparing to board the next sailings. A fourth ship skipped its scheduled Miami port call altogether.

The disruptions are part of a broader stretch of hazardous marine conditions affecting cruise itineraries, port calls, and embarkation schedules across the region.

For travelers sailing from Florida, the delays are a reminder that a cruise vacation can be affected by weather even when no hurricane is directly threatening the region.

Three Cruise Ships Delayed Returning to Miami

Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Getaway, along with Cunard's Queen Elizabeth, were among the ships affected by the rough conditions near PortMiami. TUI Cruises' Mein Schiff 1 also skipped its scheduled call at Miami due to the weather.

According to the port's dock report for Oct. 27 , Norwegian Joy arrived at 12:50 p.m., followed by Queen Elizabeth at 1:15 p.m., and Norwegian Getaway at 1:35 p.m. The ships had originally been scheduled to arrive in the early morning hours to begin disembarkation around 7 a.m.

The late arrivals created a scheduling challenge for passengers ending their cruises and those preparing to embark on the next sailings.

When a ship arrives several hours behind schedule, its normal turnaround process can be pushed back. Crew members must prepare the vessel for its next group of guests, while departing passengers need to disembark before the next group can begin to board.

PortMiami's dock report shows that Norwegian Joy's departure from Miami was delayed until 9:20 p.m., while Queen Elizabeth didn't depart until nearly midnight.

Passengers discussing the delays online expressed concern about getting off their ships later than expected, while those waiting to board the next sailings had to delay their port arrivals.

Delays in a ship's return to port can also complicate passengers' onward travel plans, particularly if they have a tight time window between cruise disembarkation and their flight home. Travelers planning future cruises can reduce the risk of missing a flight by allowing extra time between their scheduled disembarkation and their flight.

Hazardous Marine Conditions Disrupt More Than One Port

The PortMiami delays follow other weather-related cruise disruptions in South Florida and The Bahamas.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise was unable to return to the Port of Palm Beach as scheduled on Oct. 27. The delay extended the ship's stay in The Bahamas and forced changes to the next sailing.

Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas skipped its scheduled visit to Perfect Day CocoCay , the cruise line's private island in The Bahamas, after strong winds and waves made docking there unsafe.

The National Weather Service has warned of hazardous marine conditions along Florida's Atlantic coast through Oct. 28, including strong winds and high seas. Small-craft advisories, dangerous surf, and rip-current risks have also been part of the broader weather picture.

These conditions can affect cruise operations even when skies appear relatively calm near the terminal. Strong winds and rough water can make approaching, maneuvering, and docking more difficult, requiring captains and port officials to prioritize safety.

The latest weather disruptions are a reminder that cruise schedules can change with little notice. Although delays and missed port calls can be frustrating for passengers, these decisions are made with safety in mind when conditions at sea make normal operations unsafe.
