Turkey's Istanbul Airport (IST) was named the most connected airport in the world, with more than 89,000 recorded connections passing through there.
The title, awarded by aviation analytics firm OAG , moved IST up from its second place finish last year. From the airport, travelers can connect to 337 different global destinations. Turkish Airlines accounts for 80 percent of the airport's capacity.
"The 2026 rankings reflect a global aviation landscape that is still recalibrating after significant disruption," John Grant, the chief analyst at OAG, said in a statement . "Istanbul's rise to the top reflects the strength of Turkish Airlines' network and the airport's geographic position as a connecting hub between east and west."
London's Heathrow Airport (LHR), which came in first place in 2025, took the second spot this year. The airport boasts over 55,000 connections to 227 destinations. However, it's main carrier, British Airways, only accounts for 51 percent of all capacity.
Potential connections for LHR on the global busiest day of the year fell by 6 percent compared to the same time period last year, which OAG attributed in part to "the ongoing disruption to Middle East schedules." The airport's capacity to the region decreased by 25 percent year-over-year during the surveyed period.
In third place was Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) with just over 68,000 connections to 281 destinations. This represents an increase in both categories for the airport compared to last year.
Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) maintained its fourth position spot, marking the "most connected airport in Asia" with over 35,700 connections and 154 destinations served.
The top ranked airport in the United States was Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), which climbed two spots to No. 5 with a total of more than 71,400 connections to 308 destinations. The airport saw a capacity increase of over 10.6 percent and an increase in potential connections of 9.8 percent, making it the "fastest-growing North American airport of those in the top 50," per OAG.
United Airlines is the dominant carrier at ORD with 49 percent of all capacity there.
Chicago was followed by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) at No. 10 overall.
To come up with its list, OAG analyzed 201 global airports for the number of connections they offer between inbound and outbound flights within a six-hour window when at least one flight was international. The company also looked at the number of destinations served between September 2025 and August 2026.
