Why Everyone Gets This Iconic European Ridge Wrong

I hiked up the ridge before sunrise. The cold air hit my face hard as I prepped the drone. My hands were freezing, but the light was starting to turn the jagged peaks completely gold.

People constantly mislabel this spot online. They call it Iceland. They tag it as some remote Scandinavian hideaway.

It isn't Iceland. This is Ebenalp and the Alpstein range in Switzerland.

The Chase for the Perfect Shot

Getting this shot wasn't easy. I packed my FPV drone up steep mountain trails in the dark just to catch the golden hour. When you're flying along sharp, vertical rock faces, there is zero room for error. One bad gust of wind or a lost signal means your gear is gone forever.

I set the drone up, checked my frame rate, and pushed the throttle forward.

The movement had to be seamless. I swept the camera across the limestone cliffs, tracking the ridgeline as the morning sun painted the rock faces in deep oranges and pinks. You can see the scale of the landscape when the drone passes over the hiking trail. Humans look like tiny specks against these massive Swiss structures.

The result? Pure magic.

High Altitude, High Risk

Flying in the Swiss Alps takes discipline. You have to understand your gear inside and out. High altitude affects battery life, and mountain winds can throw off your flight line in a fraction of a second. I calibrated the flight path to hug the contours of the mountain, locking in a smooth motion to highlight the dramatic drop-offs.

Seeing the final footage come together makes every freezing morning and heavy hike worth it. Switzerland always delivers if you're willing to put in the work to capture it right.
