Sudden Flash Floods Lock Down a Top Phuket Tourist Zone
A beach holiday in Phuket can involve more than sunbathing and island excursions when heavy rain turns roads into obstacles.
Visitors in some of the Thai island's busiest areas are dealing with mud, rocks and damaged roads after overnight flooding, complicating journeys between hotels and nearby attractions.
Floodwater had receded in many affected areas by Monday, October 26, but the cleanup remains unfinished.
More heavy rain is forecast through October 28, raising the risk of renewed flooding and landslides just as officials work to restore access.
Mudslides Trap Tourists and Damage 100 Patong Businesses
Flooding and mudslides have affected all three districts of Phuket province: Mueang Phuket, Kathu and Thalang. Patong, one of the island's main beach resorts, has been among the hardest-hit areas.
The worst disruption has included:
-
Soi Nanai 5 and Soi Nanai 8 in Patong:Mud, rocks and other debris blocked roads, with sections of Nanai Road closed while crews cleared the damage.
-
Kamala:Flooding along the Kamala-Patong route restricted traffic, with only one lane reported passable along an affected section.
-
Phuket Town and other areas:Flooding was reported on parts of Bangkok Road, Yaowarat Road and Ranong Road, as well as in Rawai, Chalong and Choeng Thale.
More than 100 households and businesses in Patong were reported affected, including homes, vehicles, shops and hotels.
Local authorities were assisting tourists staying at affected properties, with some guests remaining at their hotels until conditions improved and it was safe to leave.
The latest local situation report describes ongoing road-clearing work and traffic restrictions in Patong and Kamala.

Oct. 26 Cleanup Crews Clear Debris From Blocked Nanai Road
An early government update on October 26 said floodwater had drained by 8 a.m., allowing crews to concentrate on removing mud and debris. However, that did not mean every affected road was clear or safe to use.
Later reporting from Phuket described continued restrictions on Nanai Road and sections of the Kamala-Patong route.
The Thai government's recovery update lists Patong Town Municipality Office, Wat Suwan Khiri Wong School and Patong Bay Hill Hotel as temporary assistance centers.
Visitors needing emergency help can contact Patong Municipality's Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Unit at 076 342 600, or +66 76 342 600 from abroad.
Thai Officials Extend Flash Flood and Landslide Risk to Oct. 28
The Thai Meteorological Department warned on October 26 that southern Thailand could experience continued rainfall, including isolated very heavy downpours, through Wednesday, October 28.
"People in the South should beware of heavy to very heavy rains and accumulation that may cause flash floods, overflows and landslides especially along the waterways near foothills and lowlands," the department said in its latest weather advisory .
For visitors already on the island, the priority is checking local road conditions before heading to restaurants, beaches or excursions, particularly if traveling through Patong or Kamala. Anyone arriving soon should confirm transfer arrangements with their hotel or tour.
The flooding does not mean Phuket is entirely closed to visitors. However, with recovery work continuing and further heavy rain possible, conditions can vary considerably between neighborhoods. Check official updates before making journeys across the island.
