Fall means foliage, cooler temperatures, and big savings on trips to Europe. And that's especially true for the island of Ibiza .
Hotel rates for the popular Spanish destination dropped from $254 per night in summer to just $60 in autumn, representing about a 76 percent decrease, according to a new study from digital entertainment platform BC Game . That translates to more than a $1,300 savings over a weeklong stay.
The weather remains pleasant on the island as well with fall temperatures around 73 degrees Fahrenheit.
"Summer is when most people take their holidays, and popular destinations know it. Hotels charge what the market will pay, and in August that number is very high," the company shared in a statement with Travel + Leisure . "What travelers often miss is that the weather in early or mid-autumn is still good in southern Europe and the Mediterranean. So you're not making a sacrifice by going later; in most cases you're getting a better trip at half the price, plus fewer crowds."
The Greek island of Santorini came in second on the list with hotel prices dropping from $180 to $83 per night, down nearly 54 percent. Travelers can still expect warm weather well into fall—sans the summer crowds and sky-high rates—since autumn temperature hover around 73 degrees Fahrenheit.
The French city of Nice ranked third, with an autumn temperature just under 70 degrees Fahrenheit and hotel rates falling 55 percent from $229 to $103. Barcelona followed at No. 4, with the study putting its autumn temperature at about 72 degrees Fahrenheit and hotel prices dropping from $282 to $165.
Split, Croatia , rounded out the top five. There, hotel rates fell from $260 in summer to $117 in fall, representing a 55 percent decrease.
The Japanese city of Kyoto , meanwhile, was the only destination in the top 10 with a peak season listed as spring, when its famous cherry blossoms draw travelers there. The city ranked sixth on the list, with accommodation rates falling from $190 to $120 per night, saving around 37 percent.
The rest of the top 10 also featured perennially popular summer vacation destinations: Athens at No. 7, Lisbon at No. 8, Florence at No. 9, and Dubrovnik at No. 10.
As part of its study, the company looked at 30 popular destinations, comparing autumn temperatures along with hotel prices in August versus late October. To ensure consistency, the researchers used the same hotel in each destination for the comparison.
