Are Apple Pie a la Mode Oreos any good? I ate them so you don’t have to
The last time Oreo tried to make an apple pie flavor, it was a disaster. This time around, it was awesome.
Once again, ice cream saves the day.
Let's be clear: The Apple Pie A La Mode Oreo is different from the Apple Pie Oreo , which came out in 2017.
I tried (and hated) that cookie at the time. The filling tasted like a green apple lollipop with the artificial fruit flavor cranked to cartoonish levels.
The new flavor takes everything that went wrong with the first flavor and flips it on its head.
Hold on, I'm going to grab another one.
Apple Pie A La Mode Oreos | Review
In going "A La Mode," this cookie makes a couple of changes.
The old "Apple Pie" Oreo featured "Apple Pie" creme and came on a graham cracker-flavored cookie. The new "Apple Pie A La Mode" has a layer of "Apple Pie" creme and a layer of "Vanilla Creme" that's sandwiched between vanilla cookies.
The results are amazing. Instead of tasting like a messed up Jolly Rancher, this cookie is loaded with notes of cinnamon and vanilla.
I'm up to almost 100 flavors in my all-time Oreo rankings, and the two apple pie flavors could hardly be further apart.
The old Apple Pie Oreos are all the way down at No. 92, right between "Limeade" and "Reduced Fat." The new one? It's in the top 20 between "Cinnamon Bun" and "Oreo Thins Chocolate."
What does it taste like?
The moment you open the packages, you're hit with a sweet smell of cinnamon and vanilla. Good news: Those notes carry on straight through into the flavor as well.
Lots of Oreos try to capture the magic of their flavor inspirations. This is one of the best magic acts an Oreo has ever pulled.
You get these long, luscious rolls of cooked apple, cinnamon and vanilla. There's no graham cracker flavor. However, the vanilla cookie does a great job of nailing the pie crust element.
The inclusion of the vanilla creme is clutch. Instead of being a candy cookie that tastes like it's screaming "green apple!" in your mouth, it's a mellow, cinnamon-cushioned flavor experience.
So is it any good?
Absolutely. By bringing in multiple avenues of flavor, the cookie becomes more complex. It makes you want to grab another one.
