I got a hold of Polar Seltzer’s secret new flavor. Here’s what it tastes like
Here’s the good news: Polar Seltzer has a fun new flavor, Chili Lime Pineapple. It’s pretty good – fruity and just a little spicy.
Here’s the bad news: You can’t get it in New England. It’s only available in the “American Southwest.”
The new flavor is part of Polar’s “Expedition: Flavor” series, which releases special flavors to certain regions and vendors.
According to Polar , the “American Southwest” includes “Arizona, Texas, SoCal.” I’m assuming New Mexico is also on that list. Otherwise, that’s tough news for Albuquerque.
Polar Seltzer Expedition Flavor: Chili Lime Pineapple | Review
The limited-edition flavor isn’t on store shelves in New England. But I did manage to get a hold of some, thanks to some shady connections that ended with me meeting Orson the Polar Bear in the secret abandoned catacombs under the old Table Talk Pie factory next to Kelley Square.
Why review a seltzer that most of this website’s readership won’t be able to try? First off, as the Bay State’s leading self-titled Polar Seltzer scholar, it’s my duty to mark it down in the bubbly history books.
Second, it’s part of my ongoing quest to unravel the Expedition: Flavor series. Some flavors are only at Kroger, which we don’t have in New England. Another flavor, I had to drive down to Connecticut to buy.
Call me the Ash Ketchum of bubbly beverages. I’m gonna be the very best ( like no one ever was ) when it comes to catching all these seltzers.
What does it taste like?
Right when you open the can, you get a strong burst of pineapple aroma. It’s a harbinger of good things to come.
That fruitiness carries over lightly into the flavor. It’s vaguely lush and sweet — as much as a drink can be with zero calories.
The lime is a muted, understated component. Its tart drag adds a foundation for the more colorful flavors to build upon.
I was impressed with how the chili was incorporated. There’s certainly a detectable “spicy” element. But it never quite reaches “hot” status. It’s just a little tickle of chili pepper. Not enough to burn, but enough to notice and enjoy.
So is it any good?
I say yes, even though it’s not the sort of flavor I normally go for.
It’s really fun and probably will work great as a mixer. However, it’s not something I’d see myself going out of my way to try again.
The final word: Updated all-time seltzer rankings
It’s come to my attention that I’d neglected to rank the six other Expedition: Flavor seltzers. So, including the Chili Lime Pineapple, I’m adding a total of seven new flavors to the rankings, which have launched all the way up to 101 varieties.
