Autumn chill, rain to arrive in Mass. after warm, dry stretch peaks this weekend

Massachusetts' stretch of warm, dry weather will hit its peak this weekend before a sharp shift ushers in cooler, wetter conditions more typical of mid-autumn.

While some residents got an early taste of next week's chill Friday morning, with temperatures dipping into the upper 30s and 40s, daytime highs are expected to rebound into the mid 60s and 70s statewide, according to the National Weather Service.

Skies will remain dry and clear into Friday evening as temperatures dip back down into the mid 40s and 50s, about 10 degrees warmer than Thursday night, forecasters said.

Saturday is likely to be the first of several days with high temperatures in the upper 70s to mid 80s — about 15 degrees above average at this time of year — and residents may feel a slight uptick in humidity.

These "well above normal" warm and dry conditions will continue Sunday and Monday, forecasters said, though daytime temperatures on the coastline may not hit the 80-degree mark.

Overnight, temperatures will be mild in the 50s and 60s.

Fire weather concerns could arise on Tuesday given some 20-25 mph gusts in the forecast and the prolonged stretch of dry weather, forecasters said.

Then, on Wednesday, below normal temperatures and blustery winds will give Massachusetts a mid-autumn feel.

Skies will be overcast in the daytime as a strong cold front moves through the state, bringing with it up to 1.5 inches of rain, forecasters said. Temperatures may still be in the 70s, but forecasters are eyeing changing weather patterns that could bring them down further.

Thursday and Friday next week are expected to be chilly below normal, forecasters said, with some parts of the state struggling to reach 60 degrees during the day.
