Holyoke fire causes city water issues
HOLYOKE — A fire on the 200 block of Pine Street Tuesday morning is the source of water quality issues in the city.
The fire needed so much water that the demand stirred up sediment in the system, said Holyoke Fire Capt. David Rex.
Residents should run their taps on cold to flush out the system, a city alert said.
The issue happens when firefighters draw a large amount of water to fight a sizeable fire, Rex said. "It usually takes about 24 to 36 hours for all that stuff to settle down," he said.
Firefighters were called to the building at 268 Pine St. around 6 a.m. and the fire had torn through the stairs and into the attic, Rex said.
At the fire's height, the crew was using about 5,000 gallons per minute, Rex said.
No residents were injured, and one firefighter had a minor injury, he said. The house is now uninhabitable, he said.
As of early evening, the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
