National retailer launches ‘crazy’ deal in exchange for your change

After the U.S. Mint stopped producing pennies , "penny pinching" has taken on a whole new meaning — and some retailers are now paying a premium to get their hands on spare change.

Ocean State Job Lot is the latest to jump in, rolling out a limited-time deal that gives shoppers up to 40% extra in gift cards just for bringing in their coins.

The retailer said it's "short on coins" and asks shoppers to bring their rolled coins to any Ocean State Job Lot in exchange for two gift cards.

One card will equal 100% the value of the coins while the other will be worth 40%.

How it works

Customers can visit any Ocean State Job Lot store and bring in $10 or more in full coin rolls in exchange for a $10 gift card.

Customers will get a "Crazy Deal Gift Card" equal to 40% of the gift card amount.

But the more rolls you bring, the more funds you'll get back on your "Crazy Deal" card.

For example, $10 in rolled coins will get you a $4 deal card — but $50 in rolled coins will get you a $20 deal card.

Ocean State Job Lot operates more than 170 locations across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Massachusetts is home to more than 50 Ocean State Job Lot stores.
