Overwhelming Central Mass. vote shows residents clamoring for Costco
It remains to be seen whether Costco will open up a store in Southborough but town residents on Monday made clear that they want one.
Town voters overwhelmingly approved a change in zoning at 21 Coslin Drive, the selected site for a potential Costco. Of the 783 town meeting members, 771 voted in favor of the change while 12 voted against.
As voting ended, cheers and clapping echoed throughout the Trottier Middle School Auditorium — a clear sign that voters wanted to see the motion pass. Even though the residents of the Central Massachusetts town want to see Costco open a new location there, it remains unclear whether one will be developed.
Members of the Select Board said that the Framingham-based Atlantic Management Corp. is hoping to open the Costco.
A spokesperson for Costco and Atlantic Management Corp. did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.
If one does come to Southborough, the select board expects it to be built by the summer of 2027.
There are currently seven Costcos in Massachusetts, located in Avon, Danvers, Dedham, Everett, Sharon, Waltham and West Springfield.
There have also been rumors both on and offline that the City of Leominster may be getting a Costco at the Mall at Whitney Field .
During a phone call this summer, Leominster Mayor Dean Mazzarella previously told MassLive that negotiations had been ongoing between Costco and the mall's owners, Hull Property Group.
