Months after announcing one of America's favorite sodas would be trading in one of its ingredients for another, Coca-Cola has finally started rolling out its updated products.
In July, President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that the Atlanta-based company agreed to use real cane sugar in its iconic cola instead of corn syrup — an ingredient the company has used since the 1980s.
The soda company has begun offering the new formula and is slowly rolling out soda made with real cane sugar, however, it's in addition to keeping the version with high-fructose corn syrup on the shelves.
Coca-Cola has released 12-ounce single-serve glass bottles of its classic soda made with U.S. cane sugar in select markets, a Coca-Cola spokesperson told USA Today in a statement .
"This launch reflects our ongoing commitment to giving people more ways to enjoy the beverages they love," Coca-Cola told the outlet.
But the roll out has come with some obstacles, Coca-Cola leadership said, citing supply chain issues as a limitation in fully launching products.
"It's going to be a measured roll-out," Coca-Cola Company Chief Financial Officer John Murphy told Bloomberg . "There is only a certain amount of cane sugar available in the United States."
However, cutting back on high-fructose corn syrup in favor of " REAL Cane Sugar, " as Trump calls it, is only a new concept for U.S. consumers, as Coca-Cola already offers beverages with cane sugar in its international markets.
CEO James Quincey previously told USA Today in July that the company would be bringing a Coke sweetened with U.S. cane sugar to the market in the fall and that the new drink would "complement" and "expand" its product range.
In an earnings report , the company said the move comes "as part of its ongoing innovation agenda," it would launch products "made with U.S. cane sugar to expand its Trademark Coca-Cola product range."
Coca-Cola clarified to MassLive that cane sugar will not be a replacement for high-fructose corn syrup.
"This addition is designed to complement the company's strong core portfolio and offer more choices across occasions and preferences," the company said.
