Many major businesses are gearing up for the busiest time of year — including the United States Postal Service .

"With the goal of realigning the national postal network to meet the mailing and shipping needs of modern consumers," the USPS said it's invested nearly $20 billion in its facilities over the past four years.

The USPS announced plans to continue taking steps toward that goal, including boosting staff numbers and increasing its production load to serve the American public through the holidays.

Throughout the year, USPS prepares for the high-volume holiday season, and "we are well prepared and ready to deliver for the American public," Postmaster General David Steiner said.

"For the past several years, the Postal Service has been gaining market share in our package business, which reflects the strong value and excellent portfolio of the shipping options we provide," he added.

USPS outlined several areas of progress ahead of the 2025 holiday season, including increasing its package processing capacities by 20 million parcels a day.

"The organization has added 614 state-of-the-art package sorting machines during the past five years that can handle more, and larger, packages than older machines," USPS said .

"Automated scanning capabilities also ensure tracking visibility as packages move through the system."

Additionally, the USPS is hiring 14,000 employees ahead of the holidays, launching faster mail turnaround initiatives for mail sent within the same region and adding more vehicles to its fleet.

Recently, the agency also added a new chief performance officer position and an associated group "to identify ways to work more effectively and efficiently, working closely with customers to match needs with solutions."
