Major bank closes dozens of locations nationwide, several in Mass.

Editor's note: The story was updated around 2:20 p.m. on Nov. 3 to reflect the number of Virginia banks closing.

Major national bank, TD Bank, is closing 51 branches nationwide, including six in Massachusetts, as the company shifts to a more digital-centric retail model.

According to the Boston Business Journal , the closures are part of a broader plan to relocate 10% of the company's locations.

These upcoming closures will affect 12 East Coast states and Washington D.C., such as six in Massachusetts, seven in New York, six in Florida, six in Pennsylvania, four in South Carolina, two in Virginia, two in Vermont, three in Connecticut, three in Maine, two in New Hampshire and one in Maryland, North Carolina and D.C.

Among the Massachusetts locations slated for closure is one drive-thru banking facility.

TD Bank said it plans to close the six Massachusetts locations by Jan. 29, 2026. Branches included in the closures are:

  • 175 Cabot St., Beverly

  • 153 Meadow St., Chicopee

  • 1708 Falmouth Road, Centerville

  • 45 Central St., Lowell

  • 99 West St., Pittsfield

  • 79 Lynnfield St., Peabody

  • 242 Main St., Wareham (Drive-Thru only)

"This is our normal course of action annually as we continue to evolve with the customer needs," Laura Nitti,p resident of TD Bank's retail market for Metro Pennsylvania and South Jersey, said, according to BBJ.

During an earnings call last month, TD Bank U.S. CEO Leo Salom said the company's shift towards investing in digital and mobil abilities will "create greater capacity for our store colleagues to provide advice to our customers on a broader suite of products and services, enabling a deeper relationship."

Earlier this year, news broke that TD Bank planned to close at least 38 locations by year's end — with at least six in Massachusetts.

The second round of closures mark at least 12 locations in Massachusetts closing in 2025.

Previously announced closures include:

  • 860 South Main St., Bradford

  • 465 North Main St., East Longmeadow

  • 420 Franklin St., Framingham

  • 50 Holyoke St., Holyoke

  • 547 Broadway, Methuen

  • 2345 Main St., Tewksbury

In March, the company called the move "part of our ongoing strategic and business-as-usual reviews of TD's retail locations, we evaluate things like store traffic, customer needs, product use, and community landscape to determine any needed changes to our physical network," MassLive reported .

"We are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for our impacted customers and colleagues and look forward to continuing to provide legendary service via one of our approximately 1,100 stores or any channel our customers choose," TD Bank said.
