Vehicle linked to fatal New Year’s Eve hit-and-run in New Bedford seized by police
Investigators found the car they believe was involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed a New Bedford woman just after midnight on New Year's Eve.
Nicolassa Ventura Colaj, 33, died on Jan. 1 after she was struck by an SUV while leaving a church gathering on Acushnet Avenue, according to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.
The impact of the crash threw Colaj a distance into the road and she was brought to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The SUV that struck her fled the scene, according to the district attorney's office.
On Friday, New Bedford police announced the vehicle believed to have been involved in the incident has been identified, located and seized.
The fatal crash was still under investigation as of Jan. 2, the department said, but officers "anticipate that justice will be served swiftly." No charges against any individuals have been publicly announced.
"Our thoughts are with the family. This was a promising life cut short unnecessarily. I want to commend the work of our detectives and highlight the effectiveness of collaboration with the State Police and District Attorney's Office personnel thus far," said New Bedford Police Chief Jason Thody.
"Their expeditious work to bring justice to Nicolassa and her family exemplifies the compassion and dedication of all agencies involved," Thody said.
