Vigil for missing Mass. pregnant teen still planned after police discover human remains

A vigil intended to spread awareness of missing Rehoboth teenager Kylee Monteiro is still expected to happen on Saturday, after police found human remains believed to be hers.

Planned to be held at 401 Winthrop St. at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, the vigil was to be held to spread awareness of the 18-year-old woman's disappearance, her sister Faith Monteiro posted on Facebook.

Faith Monteiro and her sister, Catherine Monteiro, confirmed to MassLive that the vigil was still planned for Friday. Although they confirmed over Facebook that the vigil will still happen, they declined to comment further.

Monteiro's boyfriend, Gregory Groom, 22, first reported her missing on Aug. 8, a day after prosecutors say he killed her and buried her body on his property. Rehoboth police searched for her with the help of Massachusetts State Police. Monteiro was last seen at Groom's home at 107 County St. in Rehoboth. Police conducted extensive searches for the girl and eventually obtained a search warrant for the County Street property.

On Tuesday, during the execution of that search warrant, police eventually obtained a search warrant for the property and found remains "consistent with" those of Monteiro, Quinn's office said. Officials are awaiting confirmation from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner that the remains are indeed Monteiro's.

At his arraignment in Taunton District Court on Wednesday, Groom was charged with aggravated assault and battery on a person, domestic assault and battery and intimidation of a witness. He was ordered held without bail.

On Tuesday, Groom and Faith Monteiro arrived at the police station for an interview. During that interview, Groom admitted to pushing Kylee Monteiro into a door in a shed on the property, where she hit her head, according to a police report by Detective Paul McGovern of the Rehoboth Police Department filed in court. He denied pulling her hair or strangling her after being shown the text message.

Groom confessed to killing Monteiro during this interview with police, after officers told him they obtained a warrant to search his home, the police report stated.

Both Groom and Monteiro's families attended the arraignment, but neither spoke to the media as they left. A person leaving the courtroom with Monterio's family said only, "We're devastated."

Catherine Monteiro thanked her sister and investigators for their "diligence, dedication, and nonstop hard work in resolving this case," in a brief statement posted to Facebook .

"I know this is not the ending we all wanted but this is closure for us and this gives Kylee the opportunity to rest in peace with her mom and her baby," Catherine Monterio wrote. "Without you guys, she might not have found peace for years. And that's something that very few people get in cases like these."

"I think it's a good time to remind everyone to check in regularly with people, tell them you love them every chance you get, take photos every single day, and don't ever forget that people love you," the statement read. "So many people. You will always be remembered Kylee and baby Eleanor."
