A Worcester brewery is closing its taproom, but says it’s actually ‘good news’
Double Down Brewery in Worcester has a good problem. They can't brew enough beer with their current space.
So, in an unusual move, Double Down announced Thursday that it plans to close its original taproom to the public.
"Some good news! (and not so good). Due to our need to increase production capacity due to increased demand, we need to reclaim the space in the brewery that is currently being used as our taproom to ensure we can make as much Double Down as is needed," the brewery wrote on social media .
Double Down's original location also has a unique setup that puts it in a position to close its taproom in favor of more production.
The brewery is located just off Park Avenue in Worcester and operates out of a spot behind the restaurant Peppercorn's , with a door and large window connecting the two.
Peppercorn's and Double Down are separate businesses, but have a symbiotic relationship. The restaurant serves all of Double Down's beers on tap. Meanwhile, the brewery gets a steady flow of business at the location.
Peppercorn's will continue to serve all of Double Down's beers.
However, the small space doesn't allow for much brewing equipment. Before Double Down opened there in 2021, the taproom was the original location of Wormtown Brewery and Flying Dreams Brewery before they moved to their own buildings.
Double Down, which celebrated its four-year anniversary in September, has also operated seasonal beer gardens at Mountainside Cafe near Mount Wachusett for the past two years.
But as the brewery noted on social media, a big reason they're deciding to focus on production instead of having a dedicated taproom is because of distribution.
"We are fortunate now that we have Double Down out across the market so that you can continue to find us at your favorite bar or restaurant," the brewery wrote .
The brewery did not give a precise date for when the taproom will close, but noted that it "will continue to keep you all informed of our future tap room plans."
