Introduction
The Elective Training, (Summer Training) initiated fifteen years ago (in 2001), is a special feature in the educational facilities offered by the Gulf Medical University. It is a unique, innovative program, designed to provide international exposure to methodologies in healthcare and research and the nuances of Medical Advances
GMU students have the opportunity to visit universities, hospitals, pharmacies, and related Industries, as well as research laboratories in different countries, and interact with patients, physicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare service providers.
Policy Statement
It is the policy of GMU to initiate Elective Training Program to stimulate the minds of students, expand their horizons of knowledge, and prepare them for future work, by letting them observe and learn various skills, in a variety of professional settings.
Aims
- To be aware of the impact of state-of-the-art facilities, equipment, and technology in the delivery of Healthcare and Research
- To observe professionals at work in visiting Institutions, prior to student graduation.
- To develop confidence, maturity, responsibility and interpersonal skills in novel settings
- To demonstrate greater understanding of ethical, confidential and sensitive issues, when exposed to patients with different beliefs, values and culture

- Develop interpersonal communication skills while dealing with professionals and patients, having different beliefs, values and culture
- Learn health and safety policies, good practices and ethical considerations.
- Develop attitudes necessary for effective teamwork.
- Participate in decision making to increase understanding of practice of the profession in the visiting centers

Medical students
- Observe disease profile unique to the countries, students visit
- Be aware of advances in Healthcare and Research, that provide better health outcome
- Compare how healthcare is delivered in different countries
- Witness the application of professional skills in the practice of Medicine in different healthcare systems
Biomedical Science Students
- Be aware of the advances in healthcare and biomedical research.
- Be observant of the application of skills in laboratory procedures
Pharmacy Students
- Observation of practice of pharmaceutical care skills in different healthcare systems
- Exposure to standard policies and country-specific regulations governing safe and effective use of medications
- Participation in pharmaceutical care programs under supervision
- Awareness of professional services provided by pharmacists within the scope of pharmacy practice and the pharmaceutical industry
Dental Students
- Observe practice of skills of Dental care, in different Healthcare systems
- Expand knowledge on various dental procedures in different specialty practice including Operative, Endodontic, Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery, Periodontics and Orthodontics
Physiotherapy Students
- Participate in patient education using relevant and effective methods unique to Physical Therapy practice
- Witness the performance of physiotherapy interventions
Bachelor of Science Students – Anesthesia and Surgical Technology
- Understand the role of a surgical technologist through observation
- Observe the anesthetist, in preparing patient, equipment and medications
Bachelor of Science Students – Nursing
- Observe the provision of comprehensive Nursing care to patients with a variety of health problems
- Perform basic nursing procedures under supervision
Bachelor of Science Students – Laboratory Science
- Observe the processing, and analysis of biological specimens and other substances
- Witness the Performance of manual and automated tests
Bachelor of Science Students – Medical Imaging
- Observe the proceedings in various disciplines of Imaging Sciences
Associate Degree in Preclinical Sciences
- Observe disease profile unique to the countries, students visit
- Be aware of advances in Healthcare and Research, that provide better health outcome
Administrative Assistance for Elective Training.
The Coordinator of Elective Training in the Office of Student Affairs will provide all necessary help to students regarding arrangements for the training
The elective Training program will be available for students, as per the following schedule:
Mandatory (5 th year)
MBBS 4 weeks, in an Academic Year
Optional (all other years)

BSC-MLS, BSC-MIS, BHS-AST & BSN
Fall & Spring Breaks; Summer Vacation
The offerings include Elective Training in

- Hospitals/Universities/Research & Training Institutions arranged by students themselves
- In-house – Thumbay Group of Hospitals/Lab/Research Institute

Students are requested to register 6 months in advance on MOODLE by filling up the application form & uploading the relevant documents, for processing of the application in time. The Coordinator of Elective Training in the Office of Student Affairs will provide all necessary help to students regarding arrangements for the training.
Some of the Institutions with which GMU has a tie-up with, charge students for Elective Training, the details of which are available in the Office of Student Affairs.
A nonrefundable fee of 1000AED is levied as processing charges for Elective Training arranged by GMU
