Berlin, 10 February 2026– The Dean, the independent lifestyle hotel brand celebrated for its character-rich, design-led properties, has officially opened The Dean Berlin, marking the brand’s first international opening outside Ireland. Launching in February 2026, the 81-room hotel brings The Dean’s signature irreverent spirit and cultural sensibility to Charlottenburg, one of Berlin’s most storied and creatively charged neighbourhoods.
Housed in a late-19th-century building, The Dean Berlin was designed by Rachael Gowdridge, who reimagines the historic structure with a layered aesthetic that balances rawness with refinement. Original architectural features sit confidently alongside bold colour palettes, sculptural lighting and avant-garde gestures, creating interiors that channel Berlin’s energy, tension and artistic edge.
The hotel’s 81 guestrooms reflect The Dean’s contemporary-meets-refinement approach, unfolding as a sequence of deliberate contrasts. Each room begins with a colour-drenched vestibule in deep red, a cocoon-like threshold that heightens the sense of arrival before opening into the bedroom beyond. Painted original panelling in soft mauves, layered textiles and full-height drapery bring warmth and intimacy, while bespoke furniture introduces moments of surprise through unexpected material pairings and expressive patterns. Bathrooms juxtapose original tilework with bold modern interventions, offering a study in precision and personality. Guests can also enjoy exclusive in-room bath amenities created in collaboration with cult fragrance house DS & Durga.
Room categories range from Cosy Rooms and Doubles, which maximise space through clever layouts and tactile finishes, to larger rooms and suites with dedicated living areas designed for stretching out and settling in. Balcony Rooms and Suites invite the outside in, offering private outdoor spaces alongside relaxed interiors that balance form and function. Across all categories, the Dean’s hallmark attention to detail is evident, from smart storage and soft lighting to design-led comforts that create stylish urban retreats with an effortlessly welcoming feel.
Throughout the hotel, raw materiality is carefully balanced with refined detail. Patinated plaster walls, existing mosaic floors and original timber elements are paired with expressive joinery and sharply defined thresholds. This deliberate tension between old and new runs through every space, resulting in interiors that feel grounded, confident and quietly provocative.
At the heart of the hotel is Benedict, a bakery, restaurant and bar open from early morning until late evening. Serving an international all-day menu with a focus on house-made breakfast and brunch offerings, Benedict is conceived as a social hub for both hotel guests and locals, reflecting The Dean’s belief that great hospitality begins with quality service and a sense of community.
Art plays a central role in The Dean Berlin’s identity. The hotel launches with a bespoke art curation titled Wanderers , developed by independent curator Thom Oosterhof. Inspired by Berlin’s ever-shifting rhythm and the people who move through it, the curation features works by emerging and established German-based artists throughout the building. Upon arrival, guests encounter artworks by Xia Peng, Wolfgang Guenther of Melancholia Futura , Ricky Lee Gordon, Erika Richter and Wiebke Maria Wachmann, with the collection extending into corridors and guest floors. The result is a hotel that functions not only as a place to stay, but as a living reflection of Berlin’s contemporary creative scene.
The opening of The Dean Berlin forms part of the brand’s wider global expansion, joining forthcoming openings in Munich and Miami. It builds on the success of The Dean’s established hotels in Dublin, Cork and Galway, each known for forging creative partnerships, championing cultural programming and delivering a design-led approach rooted in authentic Irish hospitality.
