How are families Informed about iReady testing?
Families receive a notification of iReady testing as part of the annual academic screening, growth, and diagnostic tests notification letter for the student's grade level
The iReady Reading test is used in FCPS as a screening and growth tool to help teachers understand students' strengths and areas for support. The iReady Reading test helps teachers monitor the growth of every student in learning the content knowledge and skills of the state standards, regardless of their starting point.

Learn how the iReady Reading test is used in FCPS.
FCPS utilizes the iReady Reading testas an academic screener in grades 3-8. As an academic screener, the iReady Reading test gives teachers information about strengths and needs in students’ basic reading skills. Gaps in basic skills are the root of many later learning difficulties. Early detection and intervention in these gaps can help students reach their potential. As an academic screener, the iReady assessment provides a first look at areas in which students may need extra support. Teachers may collect more information using diagnostic assessments. When used with iReady results, information from diagnostic tests helps teachers plan targeted instruction or intervention in areas of need.
FCPS uses the iReady Reading testas a SOL-aligned growth measure in Grades 3-8.As a growth measure, the iReady tests give teachers information about student progress in developing the content knowledge and skills defined in state standards. The growth measure is used three times per year to fulfill state requirements under the Virginia Assessment Program. iReady growth results allow teachers to ensure all students are developing at the expected rate and are making progress to close any learning gaps from previous years.
FCPS is aware of the class action lawsuit involving Curriculum Associates (i-Ready) and other school systems. The following information provides context for iReady's use of student data within FCPS.
FCPS uses iReady strictly as an academic screening and growth tool for Reading, grades 3-8. FCPS does not utilize the iReady instructional (intervention curriculum) component.
FCPS shares minimum viable student data elements to support implementation of iReady tests. This consists of:
Our FCPS contract with iReady's developer restricts their use of identifiable student data. They may only use data to assign tests, calculate scores, generate reports, provide results back to FCPS, and carry out services directly related to these functions.
The contract prohibits iReady from selling or sharing student identifiable data with third parties. The contract also prohibits using it for internal research and development purposes.

The iReady assessments utilize key areas, known as "domains," to evaluate students skills and progress. Students receive questions in five (5) domains for iReady Reading. The domains assessed by the iReady Reading test are defined in the table below.
The iReady Reading test assesses five areas, or domains.
| Domain Name | Description of the Skill Measured | How This Skills Helps Students as Readers |
| Phonics | Understanding of the relationships between the sounds of spoken language and the letters of written language | Being able to make these connections quickly and easily helps readers make sense of what they are reading. |
| High-Frequency Words | Recognition of words that appear often in the books that children read | Being able to recognize these words automatically helps students read quickly and easily, which helps them make sense of what they are reading. |
| Vocabulary | Understanding the meaning of words | Knowing the meaning of many words allows readers to reach a deeper understanding of the message being communicated through writing. |
| Comprehension of Literature | Understanding of what is being read in fictional text | Being able to recognize the sequence of events, the characters, and other elements of a story, poem, or play helps readers navigate increasingly complicated texts. |
| Comprehension of Informational Text | Understanding of what is being read in nonfiction text | Being able to recognize the main idea, supporting details, and other elements of nonfiction helps readers effectively use informational resources they encounter in the real world |
After each iReady testing window, student results are shared with parents and guardians and are used by teachers to inform instructional planning.

Your student recently took an iReady Reading test as part of academic screening and growth assessments in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). iReady tests give teachers information about a student’s reading strengths and needs. The iReady test also helps teachers monitor a student’s progress in learning grade level standards and fulfills a state requirement for through-year growth monitoring in grades 3-8. You can learn more on the Academic Screening, Growth, and Diagnostic Tests webpage ( https://www.fcps.edu/academic-screening-growth-and-diagnostic-tests ), including information about your student’s mathematics tests.
The table below displays iReady outcomes for each testing window to help you answer questions about your student’s progress.
How is my student progressing over time? The goal is for your student to make progress in their learning. Scaled score changes for each skill show how your student is growing with grade level skills and preparing for more advanced concepts.
What if my student is performing below expectation? This can happen for many reasons, such as test-day factors like stress or distractions. Teachers use multiple data points to understand student performance and plan how to support or accelerate learning, as needed. More important than a score from a single test is to ensure that your student continues to learn and grow to meet or exceed grade level expectations by the end of the year.
What if my student’s score declined from an earlier test?A lower score does not mean your student did not learn or lost skills. Scores can be affected by things like stress, distraction, or taking the test in a different place. Teachers use multiple data points to understand student growth and to plan instructional support, as needed.
More information on tested skills and how to understand iReady growth family reports can be found on the iReady Test Information webpage ( https://www.fcps.edu/node/35282 ). If you have questions about your student's reading strengths and needs, please contact their teacher. If your student receives Multilingual Learner (ML) services, please note that iReady tests are administered in English. Contact your student's ML teacher for information about their English language development.
