Joshua DeSmyter
Welcome to Floris Elementary School! My name is Joshua DeSmyter, and I am honored to serve as the principal of this exceptional school community.
I bring over 22 years of experience in education, including time spent teaching in Detroit and Washington, D.C., before joining Fairfax County Public Schools in 2011. I began my FCPS journey as an elementary teacher and eventually transitioned into school leadership, serving as both an assistant principal and now a principal for the past 8 years.
Before stepping into administration, I spent approximately 14 years in the classroom, where I developed a deep appreciation for the art of teaching and the importance of building strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues. That foundation continues to guide my leadership approach today.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my wife and our 10-year-old child. As a family, we love exploring the outdoors, trying out new local restaurants, and cheering on Penn State football.
At Floris, we are committed to creating a school culture where every student is known, valued, and empowered to thrive. I’m truly excited for the year ahead as we continue to learn, lead, and SOAR together. Let’s Level Upthis school year!

Robert Gibbs
My name is Rob Gibbs, and I am honored to serve as the assistant principal at Floris Elementary School. With 25 years of experience in Fairfax County Public Schools, I’ve had the privilege of working as both a teacher and administrator at the elementary and middle school levels. Before joining the Floris community three years ago, I spent 19 wonderful years at Franklin Middle School, where I developed strong relationships and a deep passion for supporting students in their academic and personal growth.
At Floris, I am committed to fostering a positive, inclusive, and academically challenging environment where every student feels seen, heard, and valued. I believe in building strong partnerships with staff, families, and students to create a safe, supportive, and engaging school culture. My leadership is grounded in a sense of community and the belief that all children can thrive when provided with the right tools and encouragement.
Outside of school, I enjoy an active lifestyle and, most importantly, I value quality time with my family. My wife and I are the proud parents of two teenage children, and we love and care for a variety of beloved pets, including backyard chickens. Whether hiking, spending time outdoors, or cheering on my favorite football team—the Pittsburgh Steelers—I do so with the same enthusiasm and dedication I share with the Floris community.
