Special Education

There are many programs at our school, as well as in FCPS, that support the implementation of evidence-based practices to increase the academic achievement and the social and emotional competence of students based on individual needs.  Our dedicated Special Education Team works to support the needs of all our learners through general education and self-contained classrooms.

FCPS and the 2e Learner

In Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), this means that a child is considered twice exceptional when they both:

  • Are eligible for Subject-Specific, Part-Time, or Full-Time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services.
  • Have either an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan.

The AAP and Special Education staff work closely to ensure that 2e students in advanced academic programs are provided with accommodations, specialized instruction, modifications, and/or services, as detailed in their IEP or 504 Plan in a variety of academic settings in response to the student’s individual needs.

Fairfax County Public Schools offers a continuum of advanced academic services for K-12 students. The continuum builds upon the students’ individual strengths and skills. AAP seeks to maximize the academic potential for all learners.

What do 2e students need?

2e students can thrive when...

Individualized & flexible instruction is responsive to students’ strengths, disabilities, and challenges. Supports, accommodations, and/or services help them access instruction and demonstrate understanding.

Social-emotional learning and accompanying strategies build their confidence, skills, resilience, and a sense of belonging.

Collaborative teams (including the student, teachers, support staff, and families) design and adjust plans that affirm their identities and experiences

How do families & FCPS staff partner?

We believe strong partnerships and active communication between schools and families are key to supporting 2e students. Together, we:

borate in the identification, evaluation, and instructional planning processes to understand student strengths, needs, and goals.

Communicate regularly about progress, supports, strategies, and wellness.

Engage in decision-making processes about course selection, accommodations, and specialized instruction and/or services (when applicable).

Assume collective responsibility to co-create environments where students can thrive.

What are some ways families can support 2e students at home?

Recognize and celebrate effort as well as achievement.

Support your child’s strengths and help them navigate struggles.

Provide opportunities for your child to consider and express ways in which they learn best. Teach self-advocacy at home and school.

Reach out to the school team if you see signs of stress, withdrawal, or burnout.
