First Class Awards Recognize Inclusion and Positive Impact
In March, the Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities (ACSD) recognized 13 individuals and teams for excellence in all facets of education related to disability. The organization’s First Class Award celebrates and recognizes individuals who support, implement, or design programs and activities that include students with disabilities and result in improving outcomes for all students.
This year’s winners included Kimberly O’Hara, teacher trainee at Coates Elementary School(pictured second from left), ensures her classroom is structured to support diverse learning needs, creating a truly inclusive space. She proactively implements scaffolds and strategies benefiting all students, not just those with disabilities. She also focuses on using positive language when interacting with students to support their progress.
Winners of the First Class Award model excellence in their role relative to special education, have a positive impact that benefits disabled and non-disabled students alike, and are committed to creating an inclusive environment and mindset. The winners are putting into action FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered , which fosters a student safety and well-being and an inclusive school climate and culture.
