Academic Excellence: The Numbers are In

This week, we successfully administered our Math and Science SOLs. I am thrilled to share that as the preliminary scores “roar” in, the data confirms what we already knew: our students are excelling. We are currently on pace to outperform last year’s SOL results, showing significant gains in both individual mastery and annual performance. These results speak to the preparation in our classrooms and the sheer determination and motivation of our students.

WHAT’S Next?

While we celebrate current academic wins, this week was also dedicated to the "what’s next" conversation. We turned our focus toward the future with three of our favorite events:

  • National Decision Day:In a sea of college tees and high-fives, our seniors officially declared where their journeys will continue. Seeing parents and classmates cheer as students committed to their futures reminded us all why we do this work.
  • Annual College and Trades Fair:Our commons was transformed into a hub of opportunity. We welcomed over 30 organizations, ranging from top-tier universities to specialized trade programs. Students engaged in meaningful dialogue, asking the "right fit" questions that will shape their professional lives and futures.
  • Transition Ceremony:We held a special celebration for our students heading into career prep programs. As they prepare to leave FHS for specialized training, we honored their readiness to enter the workforce and their commitment to their chosen path.

A Note of Gratitude

Whether our students are headed toward a four-year degree, a technical certification, the military, or the workforce, the goal remains the same: ensuring students leave FHS with a solid plan and the confidence to execute it. Thank you to our staff who organized these experiences, the families who joined us for these celebrations, and the faculty who work behind the scenes every day to guarantee student access and success.

Have a PAWSome weekend!

Senior Awarded Jane Mahoney Peterson Umbrella Award

Senior Seokjin Hanwas presented with the Jane Mahoney Peterson Umbrella Awardrecently.

This award is named after Jane Mahoney Peterson who graduated from FHS in 1942. When Jane went to FHS, she completed what was known at the time as the Commercial track. When Jane was about to graduate from FHS, awards were given to other students who were considered to be “going places.” However, Jane’s Business Teacher pulled her aside and said she knew Jane had great potential to succeed in the workplace and she gave Jane an umbrella as a gift, since she would need it to go to work. Jane was always thankful to this teacher for recognizing her talent and for the gift of the umbrella, which she kept for years.

The award include a check for $800. Congratulations, Seokjin, well done!

Activity Spotlight Crew Regatta

Our FHS Crew Teamhad an amazing day on the river!! The kids were excited and the races were so much fun. Both boats ended up placing 6th in the finals with some incredibly tough competition statewide. Way to go, Lions!!

Fairfax Lions Need to Know: New Cell Phone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) . The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime.More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage

Other SR&R Changes for the 2026-27 School Year

Visit the FCPS website or the School Board agenda to learn about additional updates, including:

  • Added guidance and procedures for in-school and out-of-school suspensions and discipline investigations, including supports for students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
  • Expanded guidance and standardized disciplinary procedures (“Universal Grade Matrices”) related to harassment, hate speech, discriminatory behavior, and Title IX reporting requirements.
  • Responses to incidents involving intimate images, fighting, physical aggression, object throwing, and drug policy violations.

Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Update

On Friday, May 8, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid provided an update on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Budget. FCPS receives the majority of its funding from the Fairfax County Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Fairfax County Government recently adopted its FY 2027 Budget, and at the funding levels provided, there is currently a $28 million budget gap. In addition, the state budget has not been finalized. At last Thursday's School Board meeting, the superintendent proposed adjustments that would balance the FCPS budget.

Read Dr. Reid’s message to the community for more information on the budget process and budget priorities .

Attendance Matters!

As we enter the final weeks of the school year, Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates your continued partnership in supporting your child’s success. Regular attendance plays an important role in helping students stay engaged in learning, maintain connections with their teachers and peers, and finish the school year strong.

Attending school consistently also helps students build valuable habits such as responsibility, perseverance, and daily routines that support success both in and out of the classroom.

If your child needs to miss school, please remember to report the absence. Full-day absences can be reported in ParentVUE . Families may also report absences by calling the school attendance line or emailing the school-designated attendance address.

If your child is experiencing challenges that are affecting attendance, we are here to help. Please contact your child’s school so staff can partner with you to provide support and resources. Learn more about attendance resources

🦁 THANK YOU, TEACHERS!! 📚🍎

May 1, 2026

Happy Friday Fairfax Families,

It has been a truly remarkable week here at Fairfax High School as we came together to celebrate our incredible teachers and staff. Our educators are deeply invested in the success of every student, and thanks to the generosity of our parents and community partners, we were able to honor them with several treats and gifts throughout the week.

Celebrating Student Excellence

I had the distinct pleasure of attending the Fairfax City School Board meeting this week to celebrate the diverse talents of our student body. It was an honor to highlight our:

  • National Merit Finalists and Science Olympiad State Winners
  • Athletic State Champions and Arbor Day Poetry Winners
  • Choral State and Regional Finalists

Beyond these accolades, I was able to share updates on our academic progress, truly highlighting the "magic" that happens both inside and outside our school walls every day.

Academic Mastery & Industry Excellence

We began our AP testing this week, and I have been impressed by how "locked in" our students are. They are working diligently to apply their skills and knowledge to demonstrate true mastery. We also hosted our CTE Awards, celebrating excellence in career education and industry—a testament to our students' readiness for their future professional paths.

Launching Senior Pride Prep

We are particularly excited to launch Senior Pride Prep next week! This innovative new opportunity allows our seniors to head out into the "real world" and apply their classroom knowledge in a variety of settings. Our students will be gaining invaluable experience at:

  • Local schools and non-profits
  • City government agencies
  • Law firms, real estate agencies, and many other local businesses

As we head into the weekend, I want to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all of our Lion family who are mothers or serve maternal roles in the lives of others. Your influence and support are vital to the success of our students.

Thank you for your continued partnership in making Fairfax High School a place where excellence is both expected and celebrated.

Warm regards,

After 7 years at Fairfax, Ms. Woodill will be moving to Pennsylvania to be the Music Program Director for St. Tikhon's Seminary. She built an outstanding program and leaves behind a wonderful legacy. We will miss her but wish her the best of luck in this next chapter! Thank you, Ms. Woodill!!! 🎉🦁💖

🗓️Calendar Reminders Happy Mother's Day 💖

a graphic of a heart and flowers saying Happy Mother's Day

As we approach Mother’s Day, our school community pauses to celebrate the incredible influence of the women who shape our lives. We recognize that "Mother" is more than just a title; it is a verb - an ongoing act of courage, sacrifice, and unconditional love.

To every kind of caregiver - Mothers and Grandmothers, Mother figures, and Mentors - we extend our deepest gratitude.

Regardless of how you are spending this Sunday, we hope you find a moment of peace and a reminder of your own worth. To those who nurture, those who lead, and those who carry on a legacy of love: Happy Mother’s Day.

Food Allergy Awareness Month

https://www.niaid.nih.gov/diseases-conditions/food-allergy

FCPS Caters to Food Allergies

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Learn more about the documentation required and the steps to develop a safe menu for students .

National School Nurse Day, May 6

School Nurse Day May 6, 2026

National School Nurse Day is Wednesday, May 6. It is a day to recognize the many contributions that school nurses make to student health and learning.

FCPS appreciates the role of School Public Health Nurses (PHNs) for their contribution to the health and welfare of all our students. Professional school nurses support the needs of students through their delivery of healthcare, contributions to local school communities, and promotion of safety, prevention, and wellness throughout the year. They are advocates who bridge healthcare and education by supporting student health and readiness to learn. School nurses are essential to our community and work tirelessly to make a positive impact in the lives of their students.

Please join us in thanking the PHNs for their hard work and dedication to FCPS students.

Inspired by the evocative power of poetry, each piece serves as a visceral translation of emotion, turning written verse into breathtaking physical expression. From the first spark of inspiration to the depths of raw feeling, watch as words transcend the page and take flight on stage.

Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4-8 Our Fairfax Teachers are PAWSOME!! 🐾🦁

May 1, 2026

Happy Friday, Fairfax Families,

May has officially arrived, and with it, the final countdown to the end of the school year. While the finish line is in sight, these next few weeks represent a critical time for our students to showcase their hard work and dedication.

Testing & Wellbeing

SOL testing began this week, and our halls are filled with a sense of focus as students prepare for both SOL and AP exams. To our students: you have put in the work to get here. Now, it’s time to trust your preparation.

To perform your best, please remember to:

  • Rest:Prioritize a full night’s sleep to keep your mind sharp.
  • Fuel Up:Don't skip breakfast or lunch; your brain needs the energy.
  • Keep Perspective:While these exams are important, do not let stress overwhelm you.

Don’t Miss the Show!

There is "Something Rotten" at Fairfax—and it’s spectacular!  This weekend marks the opening of our spring musical. I encourage everyone to grab their tickets and join us for a night of incredible talent and laughter with the FX Players. Supporting our performing arts is a wonderful way to decompress and celebrate our school community.

Celebrating Our Educators

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. We couldn’t wait to get started, so the festivities began today with student-made signs and special treats. Our teachers work tirelessly to support student success, and it is a joy to see them recognized for their PAWSome heart and soul.

  • Saturday School

DECA ICD Conference

This week, 25 Fairfax High School DECA students traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, to compete at the International Career Development Conference, joining over 25,000 peers from around the world. Fairfax students excelled in a variety of challenges, ranging from presenting written marketing research projects to industry judges to participating in high-stakes decision-making roleplays and leadership programs. A standout achievement belongs to Neeraj Yelakanti and Aadi Salhotra, who were named international top finalists for their Finance Operations Research project; they collaborated with MainStreet Bank to integrate customer feedback into the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Student Insights Matter!

April 24, 2026

Happy Friday Fairfax!

Feedback Matters

We were delighted to host the City of Fairfax School Board student panel. Our lions are leading the way with honest and innovative feedback on ways to continue to improve facilities, instruction, and community connection.

Celebrating Academic Achievement

This week, we took time to recognize the dedication and excellence of our students in the Social Studies and World Language departments. Seeing our students honored for their commitment to understanding our history, our world, and the diverse languages that connect us is always a highlight of my year.

Building Future Opportunities

Our recent Auto Tech Council meeting was a true "meeting of the minds," bringing together industry experts and educators to ensure we are providing the most robust, relevant, and exciting opportunities for our students in the automotive technology pathway. We are energized by the roadmap we’ve developed to keep Fairfax High at the forefront of career and technical education.

The Heartbeat of Fairfax High

I want to take a moment to extend a profound, heartfelt thank you to our Administrative Professionals - our Office Assistants and Administrative Assistants. They are, without a doubt, the heartbeat of this school. Their tireless work, grace under pressure, and commitment to our students and staff make everything else we do possible. Thank you for all that you do behind the scenes to keep our community running seamlessly.

Music in the City

Finally, our Band, Choir, and Orchestra are traveling to New York City! I know they are busy seeing the sights and representing Fairfax High with talent and pride. We cannot wait to hear all about their experiences when they return.

Thank you all for your continued support of our students and our school community. Have a wonderful weekend.

This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

April 10, 2026

Greetings, Lion Families,

What a whirlwind of a week it has been. Despite the shorter schedule, the energy at Fairfax High School was nothing short of electric coming back from a break. We kicked things off with our Winter and Spring Pep Rally, and seeing the smiles and spirit in the gym was the perfect way to welcome everyone back and celebrate athletics, community, and have a little fun.

Highlights of the Week

  • Pyramid Art Show:It was a wonderful evening of artistic expression and community critique. Seeing the creative trajectory of students across the Fairfax Pyramid reminds us of the incredible talent roaring in our community.
  • Theater All-Stars:Today, our halls were filled with budding performers! Our FX Playershosted theater camp sessions filled with singing, dancing, and acting. There was so much K-POP.
  • Lady Lion Soccer Camp:The soccer field was buzzing with activity as our Lady Lions led the way, mentoring young athletes and fostering a love for the game.

Celebrating Staff

This week, we took a moment to honor the dedicated professionals who keep our school running smoothly and safely.

  • Our Librarians:Thank you for making the library a dynamic hub of discovery. From research lessons to unique contests, it’s no wonder the library is packed before school, at lunch, and after school!
  • Our "PAWSome" Assistant Principals:A huge thank you to our APs. Their commitment to their content areas, their grade levels, and the safety and success of every student at FHS is truly inspiring.

Looking Ahead: All Things in Focus

Next week is all about the future. We are shifting our gaze toward what lies beyond the graduation stage.

  • Monday: Junior Focus DayThis event is dedicated to "life after high school" planning. We will dive deep into college admissions, essay writing, applications, and career pathways. It’s a pivotal day for our Juniors to start turning their dreams into actionable plans.
  • Wednesday: On-Site Job FairDuring Advisory, we are thrilled to partner with Fairfax Cityto host a job fair. This is a unique opportunity for our students to access local jobs and internships right here during the instructional day.

Let’s keep this momentum going as we head into another productive week and kick off an amazing FINAL quarter.

Student Spotlight Virginia Girls State Delegate

Big shoutout to Junior, Yaennah Kim, as our delegate attending Longwood University! 🎉 We’re so proud and confident that she’s going to have an amazing experience, make great connections, and represent us well. Enjoy every moment, Yaennah!

What a week to be a Lion! As we head into Spring Break, I am reflecting on the incredible energy that filled our halls during one of my favorite annual traditions: The Fairfax High School Cultural Celebration.Seeing our students share the rich diversity and heritage that makes our community so dynamic is always a highlight of my year. It is a powerful reminder that our differences are truly our greatest strength.

Celebrating Excellence: Joaquin Perez

I am absolutely elated to announce that our very own Joaquin Perezhas been named the Region 5 Outstanding New Teacher of the Year!Joaquin’s story is a special one; as a Fairfax graduate, he walked these same halls as a student before returning to his alma mater to serve as an ESOL teacher. His kindness, compassion, and the authentic connections he builds with his students are undeniable. Please join me in congratulating Mr. Perez on this well-deserved honor!

Looking Ahead: Quarter 3 & Spring Break

We have officially reached the end of Quarter 3. I have watched our students work tirelessly this week to wrap up final assignments and projects. They have certainly earned this time off.

I wish all of our families a wonderful Spring Breakfilled with rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Whether you are traveling or enjoying a "staycation," I hope you find time to unplug and recharge.

The Final Stretch

When we return, the "countdown" begins in earnest. We will be heading straight into:

At FCPS, the safety of our students, staff, and visitors is our highest priority — no matter the season. In extreme cold, we monitor National Weather Service (NWS) guidance, adjust outdoor activities, and ensure our buildings are warm and secure. In extreme heat, we modify or cancel outdoor activities, use on-site measurements to guide athletic decisions, and promote hydration and cooling breaks.

FCPS has plans in place to provide guidance during severe weather, including storms, flooding, and tornadoes. Decisions are informed by industry best practices, weather alerts, and a commitment to keeping our school community safe and healthy year-round. Marketing Fashion Show

Congrats to Kay Walters and her Marketing studentsfor another phenomenal Fashion Show! Thank you to the FX Players and LUSA performers for participating!

March 19, 2026

Good Afternoon, Fairfax Families,

This week began with a heavy heart as our school community gathered to honor the memories of the current and former students we have lost. These moments of silence are vital; they allow us to pause, reflect, and support one another in our shared grief.

We have spoken candidly with our students about the power of their voices. The "See Something, Say Something" initiative is more than just a slogan—it is a cornerstone of our security. I want to thank every student who has had the courage to come forward and report incidents of intolerable behavior. Your action is exactly what keeps our halls and classes safe and our community strong.

Celebrating Our Students

Despite the weight of the week, it was also a time to celebrate the vibrant energy and talent that define our school during Student Appreciation Week. From high-energy "Minute to Win It" games to quiet moments of choosing words of affirmation, it was a joy to see our students recognized for the unique individuals they are.

Fashion Around the World

We capped off the week with an absolute masterclass in professionalism and creativity: the Fashion Around the World Show. Our Marketing students didn't just put on a show; they ran a business.

They:

  • Secured clothing donations from local businesses.
  • Designed and built custom modeling sets for each featured country.
  • Choreographed the entire run of show.
  • Executed a high-quality, flawless production.

Seeing the intersection of global culture and student leadership was the perfect way to head into the weekend. To our Marketing team and our models: your hard work did not go unnoticed. We also enjoyed seeing LUSA dance and The FX Players perform.

Warmly,

Student Spotlight National History Bowl Success!

March 13, 2026

Greetings, Fairfax Families,

What a week of "ROAR"ing weather! March certainly came in like a Lion, but even the unpredictable skies couldn't dim the light of our students' achievements. From high-stakes assessments to entrepreneurial spirit, the energy at FHS is unmatched.

Shining a Light: National Honor Society Inductions

One of the highlights of my year was witnessing the induction of 250 students into the Fairfax High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. These student leaders have committed themselves to Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. As they "shine their light," I am confident they will continue to have a profound impact on our community.

Academic Milestones: WIDA & College Planning

  • WIDABEST: We have officially closed our WIDA testing window with an incredible 94% participation rate. This is a huge win for our school, and I want to personally thank our ESOL team and our students for meeting this goal with such diligence.
  • Sophomore College Night: We were thrilled to welcome 150 families this week to begin the college planning journey. It’s never too early to start looking at "the right fit" for our students’ futures.

Market Days 2.0 & School Spirit

The "Market Days" craze returned this week with a vengeance! Our student entrepreneurs leveled up with pop-up shops featuring refreshers, popcorn, cookies, and even prize games. The hallways felt like a true business hub. Speaking of celebration, we hosted a "No Tardy Party" for 547 students who have made timeliness a priority. It was a joy to see so many students recognized for the "small habit" of being on time.

Assessment Success & Pi Day

Our Band and Choral students headed to their formal assessments this week. I am proud to report that the scores were a direct reflection of their talent, dedication, and hours of hard work. We rounded out the week (pun intended) with Pi Day, thanks to our wonderful PTSA who provided tasty round treats and pie for students during lunch!

Rotary Speech: Uniting for Good

Finally, our students competed in the Rotary Speech Contest under the theme "Unite for Good."  While every contestant was impressive, I was particularly moved by a quote from one of our students, Isabelle, who said:

"Change does not have to be large or grand; it can be a small change that begins with ordinary people who want to do good."

That sentiment is exactly what we strive for at Fairfax. Whether it’s passing an SOL, showing up on time, or spreading "Lion Love," those small actions create the grand culture we enjoy every day.

Warmly,

Student Spotlight National Honor Society Induction

Congratulations to our students who were inducted into the National Honor Society earlier this week!! Well done, Lions!! 🎉🦁

Speech Team Success

Our Speech Teamhad a very successful WACFL MetroFinals Tournament last weekend. We had nine total students compete for spots at the GrandNationals tournament, which is a record high over the last twelve years. Vrinda Gunupati, Charles Rogers, and Isabelle Anall qualified and advanced to compete at GrandNationals in May! Congrats, Lions, and well done!! 🎉🦁

Interact Club

Fairfax Rotary Members visited Ms. Reed'sclass to hear entries for their  Speech Contest. This year's theme was "Unite for Good."

FBLA Competition

At a recent FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) competition, Freshman Sauren Kwatraqualified for states by finishing 2nd place overall at the regional competition for “Intro to Public Speaking.”  Congrats, Sauren, and good luck at states!!

School Spotlight Sophomore College Night was a Success!

March 6, 2026

Greetings, Fairfax Families,

As we prepare to "leap ahead" with our clocks this weekend, I am reminded that warmer days and brighter rays are just around the corner. This week at FHS, the energy was palpable as we celebrated excellence in every corner of our campus.

Women’s History Month: Creating Space in Every Place

We kicked off Women’s History Month with an incredible visit from the Professional Women’s Lacrosse League (PWLL). The "future is female" was the theme of the day as we welcomed professional players, local mayors, and visiting students for a powerful panel discussion. The conversation centered on commitment, dedication, and the importance of creating space for oneself in every arena. It was an inspiring reminder of the impact our students can have when they lead with purpose.

Market Days: The Entrepreneurial Craze

The halls were buzzing (and smelled delicious!) during our latest Market Days. Our future business leaders turned the school into a vibrant marketplace with their mini-business pop-up shops. From "walking tacos" to fresh-made waffles, the execution and entrepreneurial spirit were outstanding. It is clear these "Lion" leaders are ready to elevate their ideas into reality!

Lions Taking the Lead & Academic Debates

Today, we had the distinct honor of recognizing 80 "Lions Taking the Lead." These students represent the heart of our community, consistently going above and beyond to support their peers and our school.

The academic fire was also lit in our Spanish IV classrooms this week! Students engaged in a "heated" debate competition—entirely in Spanish—arguing the merits of Books vs. Movies. Seeing our students use their language proficiency to navigate complex arguments is exactly the kind of we PAWSome energy we love to see.

A Night of Talent and Feedback

Our Choral program shared their immense talents with a packed house this week. In a unique twist, the Choir Director put the audience to work! Family and friends were given rubrics to assess and provide feedback to each choir. It was a wonderful way to turn a concert into a collaborative learning experience for everyone involved.

Quarter 3: The Path to the Finish Line

Progress reports were released this week. While they provide a snapshot of current performance, they are also a call to action.

  • Success Plans: There is still plenty of time to build a success plan.
  • Support Systems: Encourage your student to utilize Lion Time, attend Saturday School, or stay for Late Bus Days to ensure a strong finish to the quarter.

Thank you for your continued partnership as we move through this busy spring season. Let’s make the most of the extra daylight!

Warmly,

Student Spotlight Lions Take the Lead Ceremony

Today we celebrated over 80 students at our Lions Take the Lead Ceremony. Students were celebrated for demonstrating Fairfax County's Portrait of a Graduate skills or our PAWS (Promoting Empathy, Accountable Actions, Working Hard, Self Advocacy) attributes! Congratulations to the students again!
