FCPS News Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Update

On Friday, May 8, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid provided an update on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Budget. FCPS receives the majority of its funding from the Fairfax County Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Fairfax County Government recently adopted its FY 2027 Budget, and at the funding levels provided, there is currently a $28 million budget gap. In addition, the state budget has not been finalized. At last Thursday's School Board meeting, the superintendent proposed adjustments that would balance the FCPS budget.

Read Dr. Reid’s message to the community for more information on the budget process and budget priorities .

New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) . The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime.More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage

Other SR&R Changes for the 2026-27 School Year

Visit the FCPS website or the School Board agenda to learn about additional updates, including:

  • Added guidance and procedures for in-school and out-of-school suspensions and discipline investigations, including supports for students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
  • Expanded guidance and standardized disciplinary procedures (“Universal Grade Matrices”) related to harassment, hate speech, discriminatory behavior, and Title IX reporting requirements.
  • Responses to incidents involving intimate images, fighting, physical aggression, object throwing, and drug policy violations
Finish the School Year With Strong Attendance!

As we enter the final weeks of the school year, Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates your continued partnership in supporting your child’s success. Regular attendance plays an important role in helping students stay engaged in learning, maintain connections with their teachers and peers, and finish the school year strong.

Attending school consistently also helps students build valuable habits such as responsibility, perseverance, and daily routines that support success both in and out of the classroom.

If your child needs to miss school, please remember to report the absence. Full-day absences can be reported in ParentVUE . Families may also report absences by calling the school attendance line or emailing the school-designated attendance address.

If your child is experiencing challenges that are affecting attendance, we are here to help. Please contact your child’s school so staff can partner with you to provide support and resources. Learn more about attendance resources

FCPS News FCPS Caters to Food Allergies

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and Rising 12th Graders

The following immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grade each school year.

All students entering 7th gradeare required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine

  • To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 7 or older.
  • To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
  • To meet the HPV requirement, the vaccination should be given between the ages of 11 to 12 or as early as 9 years old.
    •  As a parent/guardian, you may decide that your child will not receive the HPV vaccination. The school does not require documentation if a parent/guardian elects for their student not to receive the HPV vaccination.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and health care providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time.

Immunization Events for FCPS Students

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students at no out-of-pocket cost. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations.

Dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents/guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student . Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are also available.

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

This week, we celebrated the Month of the Military Child, taking time to recognize and honor the unique experiences of our military-connected students.

A highlight of the week was Wednesday’s Month of the Military Child Breakfast. It was an honor to host our military families. To our service members and their children—thank you. We recognize your resilience, the transitions you navigate, and the sacrifices you make. You are an important part of the Fairview community, and we are committed to being a supportive home base for you wherever you go.

We’re wrapping up the week today with our annual Field Day, and the excitement on the blacktop has been contagious! From relay races to tug-of-war, students have shown great teamwork, sportsmanship, and joy in the sunshine.

Thank you to our Fairview PTA, Family Volunteers, and staff for making these celebrations possible.

I hope you all have a wonderful, restful weekend.

Updates to 2026-27 School Year Calendar

The School Board voted to direct the superintendent to designate Veterans Day as a standard instructional day for the 2026-27 school year. Because this day was added, the 2026-27 school year will now end for students on Wednesday, June 16, 2027. Find additional information on BoardDocs . View the updated complete school year calendar on FCPS’ website.

The last day of school for the current school year — Wednesday, June 17, 2026— has not changed.

Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

Learn more about how to support your child and why test participation matters .

Help FCPS Sustain Excellence: Make Your Voice Heard on the FY 2027 Budget

About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. There are several upcoming opportunities to provide feedback to the county on its budget before final adoption in May. This includes public budget hearings (April 14-16) and an online survey . Learn how the FCPS budget helps us sustain our excellence .

Community Conversations: Share Your Thoughts With Dr. Reid

As a listening leader, connecting with community members across our school division is critical to FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. Her Community Conversations are opportunities for you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Events will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on:

Click on a date to register to attend that event. Registration is not required, but it helps with planning, especially for child care and interpretation services. Events are open to all. Visit the superintendent’s engagement page for the most up-to-date information.

Resources to Help Infants and Toddlers Meet Milestones

Are you concerned about your infant, toddler, or preschool-aged child’s development? Resources are available if your child exhibits difficulties in one or more of the following areas: communication, fine and/or gross motor skills, self-help skills, problem-solving, and attention skills. Learn more about typical developmental milestones .

The Infant & Toddler Connection of Virginia (ITC) provides evaluations and services for children (0-36 months) who have developmental delays or medical conditions that may affect development. Parents are encouraged to contact ITC at 703-246-7121 to share their concerns.

Early Childhood Child Find is the process of identifying children with potential special education needs between the ages of 20 months and 5 years (children must be two by September 30).

FCPS Early Childhood Identification and Services (ECID&S) offers a free referral process to identify potential developmental delays or disabilities. Special education services are provided for all children who are found eligible through the referral process. Parents are encouraged to call 571-423-4121 with questions.

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

What an incredible way to wrap up the third quarter! This past week has been filled with energy, academic milestones, and that unmistakable sense of Fairview pride. Watching our students push through their assessments and celebrate their hard work has been the highlight of my week.

As we head into Spring Break, I want to wish every one of our students, staff members, and families a restorative and joyful week off. Whether you are traveling or enjoying a "staycation" here at home, I hope you find plenty of time to unplug, relax, and recharge.

We truly can’t wait to see those smiling faces back in the hallways on Tuesday, April 7, ready to finish the year strong.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for making Fairview such a special place to learn and grow. Have a safe and wonderful break!

Students will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.

FCPS Commitment to Weather Safety

At FCPS, the safety of our students, staff, and visitors is our highest priority — no matter the season. In extreme cold, we monitor National Weather Service (NWS) guidance, adjust outdoor activities, and ensure our buildings are warm and secure. In extreme heat, we modify or cancel outdoor activities, use on-site measurements to guide athletic decisions, and promote hydration and cooling breaks.

FCPS has plans in place to provide guidance during severe weather, including storms, flooding, and tornadoes. Decisions are informed by industry best practices, weather alerts, and a commitment to keeping our school community safe and healthy year-round. Read more about weather safety , including the differences between an advisory, watch, and warning.

Provide the County Government With Feedback on its Budget

About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. • Smart watchesthat serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.

If you need to contact your child during the school day, please call our front office at 703-503-3700. Visit our cell phone policy webpage for more information and answers to frequently asked questions.

Dear Fairview Families,

We have had an outstanding Read Across America Week here at Fairview. It has been a pleasure to witness our students engage so enthusiastically with new stories and celebrate that a book is more than just paper and ink—it’s a passport to another world.

To conclude this week of celebration, we cordially invite you to attend our Spring Book Fair Grand Event this evening from 5:00-7:00pm in the Fairview Library. This is the perfect opportunity to refresh your home libraries and find that next "can't-put-it-down" book for your child.

We appreciate your continued partnership in fostering a lifelong love of reading in our students. We look forward to welcoming you to the library tonight.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Fairview News March 1-7: National School Social Work Week

Whether she is navigating a difficult crisis, facilitating a small group, or simply providing a safe space for a student to be heard, her empathy and advocacy make Fairview a stronger, kinder place.

Thank you, Ms. Waldron, for your tireless dedication, your compassionate heart, and for being the "glue" that helps keep our school community together.

Fairfax County Health Department Measles Update

Measles is a highly contagious virus that infects 9 out of 10 people who are exposed, if unvaccinated or not immune. It has been in the news lately due to cases in Northern Virginia and among people who have traveled through local airports.

Children 12 months and older should have 1 or 2 doses before traveling. Depending on your specific travel plans, your health care provider may also advise you to vaccinate infants 6 to 11 months old. The spirit of heritage and the promise of the future filled the air at Carter G. Woodson High School as FCPS held its second annual Black History Month Celebration with the theme, Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence. This year’s event was especially significant as it coincided with the 100th anniversary of the movement that became Black History Month.

Students from across the division took center stage as the true "echoes" of this excellence. The program featured student-led Moments of Pride that connected local and national history to contemporary achievements. A spirited keynote speech was delivered by Vernon Walton, senior pastor at the First Baptist Church of Vienna. Another highlight of the night was the FCPS Black Excellence video tribute .

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

I’m excited to share that one of our first-grade teachers, Ms. Wilder, has been named the Robinson Pyramid Outstanding New Teacher of the Year. This well-deserved honor recognizes her dedication, creativity, and the genuine care she shows her students each day. We are so fortunate to have Ms. Wilder at Fairview!

I’m also proud to welcome you back to the building this evening for our Heritage Night and Art Show, one of my favorite events of the year. It’s a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the cultures, traditions, and stories that make our Fairview community so vibrant and special.

A huge thank you to our incredible PTA and to all of our families and staff for making Heritage Night possible. Your time, creativity, and partnership bring this event to life and make it such a powerful celebration of our community.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Samantha Goldstein

Principal

Fairview News Congratulations Ms. Wilder!

We want to give a huge shout out to Ms. Wilder for being selected as the FCPS Robinson Pyramid Outstanding New Teacher of the Year!

One of our Fairview parents wrote: "Ms. Wilder has the kind of heart, professionalism, and instinctive ability to connect with children that cannot be taught. It is clear that she was meant to be an eduator, and her students are lucky to have her in their lives. I hope we get the privilege to have her again next year for our younger son, she truly is THAT special. I truly believe she exemplifies everything this award stands for, and I hope she is recognized for the incredible beginning she's had to what I'm sure will be a long and meaningful career in education."

We are so happy for you, Ms. Wilder, and we are so lucky to have you here at Fairview! We 💙💛 you!

Kiss & Ride Update

To help ensure a smooth and timely start to our school day, we will begin opening the Kiss & Ride line  5 minutes earlier each morning at 8:55 and they will wait until 9:00 to be released to classrooms from the cafeteria.

We’ve noticed an increasing number of parents joining the Kiss & Ride line after the 9:10 bell — not simply waiting in the existing line, but entering the line after the bell has rung. In order to keep arrival procedures efficient and minimize classroom disruptions, we will no longer accept students at the Kiss & Ride door after 9:10 a.m.

Students arriving after 9:10 will need to be escorted into the main office by a parent or guardian to sign in.

We appreciate your partnership in helping us start each day on time and ready to learn. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support!

Celebrating the Power of School Breakfast

Multiple studies show that school breakfasts are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers.

This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Would you like to know what’s for breakfast? Nutrition Services has printable menus available.

  • Pre-K prioritizes 4-year-old applicants but also accepts applications for children who will be 3 years old by September 30 of the same year.
  • Early Head Start is located at three elementary schools — Clearview, Crestwood, and Dogwood — and accepts applications from pregnancy to 2 years old.

Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible; space is limited and provided based on need, not on a first-come, first-served basis.

Applications are accepted online , by email , by mail, or in person at the program office at 7423 Camp Alger Avenue, Falls Church, Virginia 22042 .

We also have so much to look forward to as a school community. A special thank you to everyone who is working hard to prepare for Heritage Night and our Art Show on February 27th. These events truly showcase the talent, diversity, and spirit of our Falcon family, and we are so grateful for the time and care that goes into making them meaningful for our students.

Here’s to a strong and successful spring ahead!

Fairview News Kiss & Ride Update

New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the  RaptorSafe App  and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

Upcoming Student Experience Survey at Fairview

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey . This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23. We will administer the survey during the school day on February 26, 2026. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You received a communication with details on how to preview the survey.

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan , which include a focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

Across the building, classrooms marked the day in creative and joyful ways. Reaching the 100th day is always a wonderful opportunity to celebrate perseverance, learning, and community. I am so proud of our students and grateful to our teachers for creating meaningful and memorable experiences.

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

We were thrilled to welcome our students back to school this week—even with the two-hour delays! Seeing our Falcons return brought so much energy and joy to the building. A huge thank-you goes to our incredible custodial team, who worked tirelessly to ensure the building was safe and ready for students and staff. They are continuing to clear the blacktop areas, and we are hopeful that with their hard work and some cooperative weather, students will be able to enjoy outdoor recess again next week.

We are also so grateful to our fabulous PTA for showing appreciation to our custodians by providing pizza and snacks. This thoughtful gesture meant a great deal and truly reflects the strong sense of community we value at Fairview.

This week, we also celebrate  National School Counseling Week. We are incredibly thankful for our school counselors, Mrs. Fructuoso and Mrs. Corderman, and the care, guidance, and support they provide to our students every day. They play an essential role in helping students grow academically, socially, and emotionally, and we are grateful for all they do to support our school community.

Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and support. Have a great weekend, we look forward to a great week ahead!

Warmly,

Samantha Goldstein

We are so lucky to have this powerhouse duo in our corner. If you see them in the halls this week, be sure to give them a high-five or a quick "thank you" for everything they do!

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

What a week it’s been! The snow has certainly transformed our neighborhood into a winter wonderland, but we know it also brings its share of challenges. We hope everyone has been staying safe, cozy, and warm indoors while the roads are being cleared.

Behind the scenes, our amazing custodial team has been working incredibly hard to clear sidewalks and pathways and make sure our school is safe and ready for students and staff. We are so grateful for their dedication and tireless efforts during this snowy stretch.

At this time, some walking paths remain icy. We will send out updated talking points on Sunday with guidance on the usability of our walking paths once conditions improve and final assessments are complete.

Enjoy the rest of your snowy weekend, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back soon!

Warmly,

Samantha Goldstein

Principal

Fairview News Upcoming Student Experience Survey at Fairview

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey . This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23. We will administer the survey during the school day on February 26, 2026. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You received a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. The electronic opt-out form can also be accessed at this link .

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan , which include a focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

FCPS News It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage .
