Military Families

Langston Hughes Middle School is proud to welcome all new and returning military-connected families throughout the year. Whether your family is joining our community long-term or for a brief stay, we are here to support your transition into—and out of—our school. We understand the unique experiences of military families and are committed to providing a welcoming, inclusive environment. 

To assist with this transition, LHMS offers several programs, including:

Panther Ambassadors

At Langston Hughes Middle School, our Panther Ambassadors are student leaders dedicated to helping new peers feel welcomed, connected, and supported from their very first day. Each new student is paired with a Panther Ambassador who serves as a friendly tour guide, mentor, and point of contact during their transition. Ambassadors help students navigate the building, understand school routines, and get involved in activities—making sure no one feels alone as they adjust to a new environment. This peer-to-peer support fosters a sense of belonging and builds leadership skills among our student ambassadors.

Military-Connected Community Gatherings

We are proud to support our military-connected students and families through a variety of events and programs throughout the school year. These gatherings are designed to build community, encourage shared experiences, and provide meaningful support during times of transition. Highlights include: 

• our  Blue Star Welcome Breakfast, which celebrates new military-connected students and families,

• our  Month of the Military Childcelebration, honoring the resilience and contributions of military youth. 

• military-connected students are invited to participate in our  “New to Hughes” events, which take place during our student advisory block and focus on team building, connection, and peer engagement. 

These programs reflect our commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, especially those navigating the unique challenges of military life.
