Oakton Elementary School History

History of Oakton Elementary School

Oakton Elementary School’s roots in our community date back to the 1850s, and the current facility is the fifth school building constructed since that time. A photograph from 1875 shows the second schoolhouse, which was built in 1873 when the community was still known as Flint Hill. The name eventually changed to Oakton in 1883, inspired by a large oak tree located near that second school site. After a fire destroyed the fourth building in 1944, the present school was opened in 1945 to continue the area's long educational legacy. Today, the third schoolhouse from 1897 remains the only original structure still standing as a historic landmark.
