📚From our Librarian

Hello, Sangster Parents!

I hope that you are all having a wonderful end of the year! I wanted to touch base with a couple of important updates:

First, the Sangster library will be getting new carpet this summer! This is very exciting, but it does mean that we will need your help getting the books returned quickly at the end of the year so that we can effectively gather and store them as the carpet is getting worked on!

The last day to check out books will be Friday, May 22.

All library books must be returned by Thursday, May 28(the day after the Memorial Day and Eid Weekend).

If you wish to volunteer to help pack up the library books before the carpet comes in, we will have two opportunities: Monday, June 8, and Tuesday, June 9. Sign up here to volunteer!

Second: Lost or missing books! If a book cannot be found, you may:

1)  Purchase a replacement copy and send it to the main office labeled with your student’s full name and “Library Replacement,”

or

2)  If the book is either unavailable or too expensive, email me at [email protected] for the replacement cost. Payment can then be made via MySchoolBucks.

Thank you for your support in helping us prepare the library for next year!

Warmly,

Stephanie Oden, Sangster Librarian

🌳Sangster Earns Green Flag Distinction!

Sangster’s Eco-Club, spearheaded by 6th grade teacher Ms. MacIver, has officially earned the nationally recognized Green Flag distinction through the Eco-Schools U.S. program and the National Wildlife Federation—awarded for excellence in environmental action and sustainability leadership.

This achievement reflects months of hard work, creativity, and commitment by our students and staff, all guided by a powerful mission:

Supporting environmental leadership and climate action in schools.

To earn Green Flag status—the highest recognition awarded by Eco-Schools—schools must accumulate at least 100 points through impactful environmental initiatives.

We’re proud to share that Sangster’s Eco-Club earned an impressive 104 points!

Here are just a few of the inspiring projects that made this possible:

  • 🎨 Native Species Coloring Books: Students designed educational coloring books featuring endangered species native to Virginia.
  • 🐦 Bird-Friendly School Certification: Efforts to create safe and welcoming habitats for local bird populations.
  • 🌼 Pollinator Garden Planting: Establishing native plants to support bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
  • 🌱 Winter Sowing Project: Growing plants sustainably during colder months to prepare for spring planting.

This milestone is more than an award—it’s a reflection of Sangster’s commitment to environmental stewardship and student leadership.

Our Eco-Club members have shown that even small actions can lead to big change when driven by passion and teamwork.

🥗School Lunch Hero Day: Friday, May 1

This day celebrates cafeteria staff, food service managers, and nutrition professionals for preparing nutritious meals daily and creating a positive, welcoming environment for students.

Thank you to all our school lunch heroes, including Blanca Grande Perez, our Cafe Manager!

🟣Month of the Military Child (MOMC) 👟Fun Run

On Saturday, we proudly hosted the Purple UP MOMC Sangster Fun Run—and what an incredible turnout! A big thank you to our Family Liaison Stacy Huisman and the Sangster PTA for helping to organize.

We encourage all students to show their support of military-connected students by wearing purple! If you have any questions or need specific support, feel free to reach out to Stacy Huisman at [email protected] .

⭐Stars & Stripes

Our Stars & Stripes display in the cafeteria garnered attention from the military publication " Stars and Stripes ". Editor Erik Slavin writes to Stacy Huisman, Sangster Military Liaison:

"It's always great to ... see the impact (of what we do) among the kids. I've shared this around the newsroom, and I know it gave our reporters and editors a nice morning boost as we work on today's news."

🍎Advanced Academic Program (AAP) Screening for School-Based Services

This spring, all students in grades K–5 who are not currently eligible for or enrolled in Full-Time AAP will be screened for School-Based AAP Services.

If you would like to share your child’s strengths as part of this process, you may submit the AAP School-Based Services Referral Form, available here:

https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/AAPSchoolBasedServicesReferralForm.pdf

Please email the completed form to both Ms. Linda Biberaj ( [email protected] )and Jennifer Redford ( [email protected] )no later than April 15.

Please note:

  • Submitting this referral form does notinitiate the screening process; all students are automatically screened.
  • The form simply provides you with an opportunity to share additional information about your child’s strengths and ensures you will receive an eligibility notification in June.
  • If your child already participated in the Full-Time AAP screening process this cycle and was not found eligible, no additional referral is needed; you will automatically receive notification.
  • If your child is already eligible and receiving Subject-Specific or Part-Time AAP services, you do not need to submit a referral form, as they will continue to receive School-Based AAP services next year.

For more information about School-Based Services, please refer to the AAP Spring Newsletter, the flyer titled Screening for Subject-Specific and Part-Time Services, which was sent home in this week’s Thursday Folder.

If you have any additional questions, reach out to our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Ms. Biberaj at [email protected] .

🟣Sangster's Purple Up! on Friday, April 17

Why purple? Because purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and the blue of the Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, and Space Force.

FCPS-wide is celebrating on Wed, 4/15, but we have moved Sangster's Purple Up Day to Friday, April 17, so as not to take away from Wednesday's Cultural Day festivities.

Stacy Huisman, Family Liaison

As the Family Liaison at Sangster Elementary School, I support all families in our community, with a special focus on military-connected students and families. Military life often brings unique challenges, including frequent moves, deployments, long TDYs, and transitions between schools.

My connection to this work is both professional and personal. My husband served 28 years in the Air Force, and our family experienced many moves and deployments. Because of these experiences, I understand the challenges military children and families face and work to ensure they feel supported, welcomed, and connected at school.

I am also a subject matter expert on military-connected students in public education and the author of the book  Seasons of My Military Student .

If your family is currently experiencing a deployment, expecting one soon, or anticipating a move, I would love to support you in any way I can.

Kiss and Ride Plan for an Earlier-than-9:10 Drop Off

Possibly due to colder temperatures, we are experiencing higher than normal Kiss-n-Ride delays. Please remember the following:

  1. Students are marked tardy if they are not in their seats by 9:10 am. If you are dropping off at Kiss-n-Ride, ensure you are considering possible traffic delays, longer wait times, and unforeseen factors. We often have different crossing guards who manage traffic on Reservation Dr. differently, which also impacts the flow of traffic in the Kiss-n-Ride lane.
  2. Staff leave the Kiss-n-Ride area around 9:09 am. If your child is brought to school at 9:10 am or after, they must be signed in at the main office by an adult.
  3. Have your child ready to exit the car when you pull up to the curb. Many students are putting on coats or finishing breakfast and it is contributing to delays in the Kiss-n-Ride lane.

6th Grade Transition to Middle School 7th Grade Course Schedules Lake Braddock Middle School

Contact Ms. Augenstein  for information and help. Here is a  chart  for the timeline and a list of resources for students and families.

Irving Middle School

Ms. Augenstein is providing academic advising as needed until Feb. 6. Our deadline to enter final course selections into SIS is Thursday, Feb. 12. Contact  Ms. Augenstein  for information and help. Here is a  chart  for the timeline and a list of resources for students and families.

AAP School Designation in SIS/STUDENT VUE

All AAP students are designated Lake Braddock in Student Vue  until parents indicate their plan to defer to Irving. Please return your child’s signed paper course selection sheet for Irving and please   complete this form that was sent to families from the FCPS AAP Office, if you haven’t done so already. This will allow Irving to show up as the designated school in your StudentVue account and will allow your child and Mrs. Augenstein to enter course selections into StudentVue for the desired school.

Ms. Augenstein will be working with Irving students during the next two weeks to provide academic advising – as needed, and will help students enter their course selections online. Email with any questions [email protected] .

If your child is zoned for Lake Braddock Middle School for the 2026–2027 school year (and eventually Lake Braddock Secondary), you have the following options:

  1. Lake Braddock Full-Time (Level IV) Program – similar to their current placement  OR
  2. Decline AAP services and enroll in  Honors classes at Lake Braddock

If your child is zoned for Irving Middle School for the 2026–2027 school year (and eventually West Springfield High School), you have the following options:

  1. Lake Braddock Full-Time (Level IV) Program – similar to their current placement. Students would return to West Springfield for 9th grade.  OR
  2. Local Level IV (also called Cluster classes) at Irving – this provides full-time AAP classes in 7th and 8th grades, similar to what they experience now.  OR
  3. Decline AAP services and enroll in  Honors classes at Irving.

What is the difference/advantage of declining AAP services and choosing Honors classes?

 - The curriculum is the same, but Honors classes may offer more flexibility.

 - At both Irving and Lake Braddock, Full-Time (Level IV) students take AAP English, History, and Science as part of the program.

 - Students choosing Honors can take Honors courses in subjects they’re passionate about (e.g., math and science) and take general education classes in areas where they prefer a lighter load.

Additional Information to Consider

World Languages

 - LBSS offers Level 1 world language options in 7th grade.

 - Irving offers Level 1 only for Spanish for Heritage Speakers and German Immersion students.

Math Pathways

 - This year, Irving was not able to offer in-person Algebra 2 Honors. Students took the course through FCPS Online as a cohort. This may change next year.

 - Lake Braddock students were able to take Algebra 2 in person.

 - Either way, students receive the instruction they need—just through different delivery models.
