Note from Dr. Sheers

Today, we celebrated the incredible volunteers who support our school, staff, and children. Thank you all!

A special appreciation goes out to our PTA Board, especially Marcella Talcott, Megan Way, Elizabeth Primm, and KP Murphy. Your boundless energy, enthusiasm, and dedication to supporting our school and the PTA are truly valued. Thanks to your efforts, the PTA has had an exceptionally successful year, strengthening our sense of community through various events like Bingo Night, Ice Cream Social, Blue and White Night, and more!

The generosity of our families in providing financial support to the PTA has enabled us to purchase updated furniture for our school library and add an extra water bottle refilling station!

We are grateful to everyone who has taken on key PTA leadership roles and sincerely appreciate our many day-to-day volunteers and chaperones.

Here are a few ways we can come together to show our appreciation:

  • Handwritten Notes: Encourage your child to write a heartfelt note or draw a picture expressing their gratitude for their teacher's hard work and dedication.
  • Classroom Supplies: Consider donating classroom supplies or materials that teachers may need to enhance their teaching experience.
  • Gifts of Appreciation: Small tokens of appreciation such as gift cards, flowers, or personalized gifts can go a long way in showing our teachers and staff how much they are valued.
  • Volunteer Assistance: Offer to volunteer your time to assist teachers with tasks or projects, allowing them to focus more on their teaching responsibilities.
  • Kind Words: Take a moment to send an email or have a brief conversation with your child's teacher to express your appreciation and admiration for their efforts. Even better, cc the administration!
  • Staff Luncheon or Treats: Coordinate with other parents to organize a special staff lunch or provide treats and snacks throughout the week as a gesture of appreciation. They love a gift of morning coffee/tea!
  • Social Media Shoutouts: Share your appreciation on social media platforms tagging our school, highlighting specific teachers and staff members and thanking them for their dedication.

Your participation in any of these activities, big or small, will undoubtedly make a meaningful difference in uplifting the spirits of our teachers and staff.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

WSES: Celebrating Our Diverse Community

Govdelivery 2 months ago
Embracing Autism Awareness Month: Celebrating Our Diverse Community

As we step into April, we embark on a journey of understanding, acceptance, and celebration during Autism Awareness Month. It's a time to recognize and honor the unique perspectives, strengths, and challenges of our incredible students who have Autism, as well as the dedication and compassion of our teaching staff who guide and support them every day.

In our diverse community, we understand that each child is like a puzzle piece, distinct and beautiful in their own right. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is not a limitation but rather a colorful spectrum that enriches our lives with its varied shades. It's a reminder that diversity is not just to be acknowledged but cherished, for it brings richness and depth to our shared experiences.

To all the parents, we extend our heartfelt admiration and support. We recognize the love, patience, and resilience you demonstrate each day as you navigate the unique journey of raising a child with Autism. Your unwavering commitment and advocacy are truly inspiring, and your dedication fuels our collective efforts to create an inclusive and understanding environment.

As we commemorate Autism Awareness Month, let us continue to foster a culture of acceptance, empathy, and inclusion. Let's celebrate the unique talents and contributions of our autism community, recognizing that our differences are what make us stronger, more compassionate, and more connected.

Please join us in wearing the color blue all this week. The color blue , is associated with calmness and acceptance, is the primary color designated for autism.

Together, let's raise awareness, promote understanding, and build a world where every individual, regardless of neurodiversity, is embraced for who they are.

Measles Is Preventable
Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.

Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics

To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:

Parents/caregivers should make an appointment but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule an appointment.

Learn more about vaccinating your child and find community resources to support their health and well-being.

Meet the 2023-2024 WSES Green Team!

Note from Dr. Sheers Calling All Bookworms!

Join us next Friday for Read-In Day and Book Character Day!

The fun starts with a parade at 9:30 am.

Here's how your child can be a part of the magic:

  • Dress up as their favorite book character!
  • Bring a copy of the book to carry in the parade (show off that amazing story!).
  • Pack a change of clothes for after the parade in case their costume isn't comfy for the rest of the day.

Remember, costumes must be school-friendly:

  • No scary outfits, masks, or weapons are allowed.

Parents, you're invited too!

  • Cheer on the parade at 9:30 amalong the upper field track.
  • Want to join in on the reading fun? Contact your child's homeroom teacher to coordinate a classroom visit.

Sadly, I will not be able to make it to the parade this year. To fill the void, please snap your pictures and send them my way!

Wishing you a fantastic day of reading and celebrating books!

Note from Dr. Sheers

Dear West Springfield Community,

Ramadan Mubarak to those in our community who observe!

Throughout the year, as we honor diverse cultural holidays, we encourage families to communicate any accommodation needs, such as adjustments for lunch, prayer or meditation spaces and times, and silent reflection periods.

During Ramadan (March 11-April 9), students who are fasting may choose to spend their scheduled lunchtime in the library for silent reflection with permission from their homeroom teacher. If your child requires additional accommodations, please feel free to reach out to me.

Warm regards,
Kelly Sheers
Principal
