Understanding K-12 Math Pathways in FCPS
FCPS offers a wide range of mathematics course options for students, and those options are evolving as we work towards our goal of all students taking Algebra in 8 th grade. In elementary school, we are moving away from providing access to higher grade-level standards for only a few.
Elementary and Middle School
Our current (2025-26 school year) fifth and sixth gradersreceived grade level content unless they were placed in an Advanced Math course. All of those students will have access to Algebra in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. For most students, this will involve condensing 7th and 8th grade math into a prealgebra course.
Our current (2025-26 school year) kindergarten through 4th graderswill see a more robust preparation for Algebra by 8th grade (if not earlier). All grade levels will be offering extensions into higher grade level content. Advanced math courses will still be offered in grades 3-6, but even students not in advanced math will be receiving ongoing access to above grade level math standards. By 6th grade, all students will have received instruction in at least half of the 7th grade standards before moving into Prealgebra or Algebra in 7th grade. Additionally, we are expecting to increase the number of students able to be in an advanced math course due to expanded access to above grade level content throughout their time at WSES. This will also offer students more flexibility and opportunity to move into advanced math courses each year as they move through grades 3-6.
Middle and High School
One of the benefits of the FCPS Algebra by 8th Grade initiative is that it will greatly expand our students' access to a wider variety and depth of math coursework in high school. The video below explains the many varied pathways students will have access to depending on their interests and post-graduation goals. Additional information is available on the FCPS Math Course Sequencing website.
