Principals' Message Hello White Oaks Community,

This week, we officially welcomed our rising kindergarteners at the 2026–2027 Orientation! It was truly wonderful to see so many bright, smiling faces and feel the collective excitement in the room. Our newest students are ready to begin their educational journey, and we are absolutely thrilled to welcome them into the Eagle family.

We were treated to several spectacular string concerts this week! A huge thank you to Mr. Johnson-Stawarz and Mr. Bixler for inspiring our students to embrace the arts and share their incredible talents. The performances were an absolute joy for students, staff, and parents alike.

Wednesday marked our final 3-hour early release of the school year. We deeply appreciate everyone's patience and ongoing support with these schedules. This dedicated time gives our fabulous teachers the vital opportunity to collaborate and plan, ensuring a strong and successful finish to the school year!

New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) . The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

Finish the School Year With Strong Attendance!

As we enter the final weeks of the school year, Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates your continued partnership in supporting your child’s success. Regular attendance plays an important role in helping students stay engaged in learning, maintain connections with their teachers and peers, and finish the school year strong.

Attending school consistently also helps students build valuable habits such as responsibility, perseverance, and daily routines that support success both in and out of the classroom.

If your child needs to miss school, please remember to report the absence. Full-day absences can be reported in ParentVUE . Families may also report absences by calling the school attendance line or emailing the school-designated attendance address.

If your child is experiencing challenges that are affecting attendance, we are here to help. Please contact your child’s school so staff can partner with you to provide support and resources. Learn more about attendance resources .

Urgent: Leadership Positions Still Open – The Future of Our PTA Depends on You

We are reaching out with a critical update regarding our PTA Board for the 2026-2027 school year. Currently, the positions of PTA President and VP of Fundraising remain vacant.

It is important to be direct: Without a President, we cannot legally operate as a PTA.

If these roles are not filled, many of the programs and traditions that define our school community may not happen next year, including:

School-Wide Events: Spirit Nights and community celebrations such as Movie Nights, Multicultural Night, and Bingo Night.

Student Support: Funding for after school clubs, field trips assistance, and school improvements.

Advocacy: Our collective voice in school and county-level decisions.

Open Positions

PTA President: Leads the PTA toward goals set by our members. You will create meeting agendas, preside over Board and Association meetings, and act as a liaison between committee chairs, school administration, and the community.

VP of Fundraising: Oversees our general fundraising efforts and works closely with committee chairs to ensure our programs stay funded and successful.

How You Can Help

We encourage you to consider stepping into one of these roles or reaching out to someone you know who would excel in them. Whether you are worried about the time commitment or have questions about the responsibilities, we want to talk to you. Our board is a collaborative team, and you will have full support as you transition into the role.

Interested or have questions? Please reach out to [email protected] for more information.

Upcoming Vote

We will be voting on our new Board members for the 2026-2027 school year at our next meeting:

Date: Thursday, May 21

Requirement: You must be a paid PTA member to cast a vote.

Please help us ensure our PTA continues to serve our students and staff next year!

Principals' Message Hello White Oaks Community,

What a vibrant week it has been celebrating the incredible staff here at White Oaks! We are truly moved by the overwhelming generosity of our PTA and community; it serves as a heartwarming reminder of why we are so proud to be part of such a dedicated family. From the Monday breakfast sponsored by Anchor Remodeling to Thursday’s delicious luncheon and today’s array of international treats, this has been a week to remember.

Adding to the excitement, we have officially debuted our new outdoor classroom near Door 10. This transformative space was made possible by the vision and hard work of Aric, a local Eagle Scout candidate. His dedication has provided our students with a fresh, inspiring environment in which to thrive.

We also want to celebrate our 5th and 6th-grade chorus for their spectacular performances this past Wednesday and Thursday. We are immensely grateful to Ms. Gridneva and Mrs. Joos de ter Beerst for stepping in so seamlessly to lead the way. Their commitment ensured the program continued without a hitch, allowing our students’ vocal talents to truly take center stage.

Have a great weekend!

What a Win! Basketball & Coin Wars Recap

The 6th Grade Committee wants to extend a massive  Thank You to the entire community for making our recent events such a resounding success. Between the energy on the court and the strategy at the coin jars, the spirit was incredible!

🪙  Coin Wars: The Results are In!

We are thrilled to announce that together, we raised  over $600 to support the 6th-grade legacy! It was a hard-fought battle, but the  6th Grade officially took the victory.

Highlights from the "War":

  • The Ultimate Comeback: We have to give a shout-out to  5th Grade, who staged a legendary recovery—climbing from  -5,100 points to  +1,400 points in just the final two days!
  • A Rare Find: Among the thousands of coins, we even discovered a  centennial penny in the jars!
🏀  Game Night Gratitude

The atmosphere at the gym was electric, and while our 6th graders played with heart,  the Staff won again! Congratulations to our teachers and faculty for defending their title for another year.

We couldn’t have done it without the participation of so many talented people:

  • To our Athletes: A huge round of applause for the  6th-grade players who left it all on the court and the  Staff Basketball Team for their impressive victory and for being such amazing sports.
  • To our Performers: Thank you to the  Strings and Band members for providing the perfect soundtrack and keeping the crowd hyped.
  • To our Volunteers: To everyone who worked the doors, cleaned up, managed concessions, and handled the logistics—you are the engine that makes these events run.
  • To our Fans: Thank you to every student, parent, and teacher who attended and cheered. Your support made the night unforgettable.

We are so proud of our students and the community for coming together for such a fun cause.  Go White Oaks!

Principals' Message Hello White Oaks Community,

As we enter May, the final full month of the school year, it is hard to believe how quickly the time has flown! We had a fantastic turnout at our 6th Grade vs. Staff basketball game last Friday. Our staff was incredibly impressed by the talent and sportsmanship our students displayed on the court; it was a fun-filled evening and a fabulous fundraiser for the 6th-grade class.

This week, we began administering SOL assessments for students in grades 3 through 6. We are so proud of the way our students have approached these tests, showing remarkable effort and a focused mindset. These assessments will continue over the next two weeks as our students work to showcase all they have learned this year.

In addition to our work in the classroom, our Get2Green team traveled west to Elizabeth Furnace this week to release the Brook Trout they have been raising. As part of the "Trout in the Classroom" initiative, this program teaches students the importance of conservation through a hands-on look at the trout life cycle. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience nature up close and personal.

Looking ahead, next week is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week! At White Oaks, we are beyond fortunate to have a staff that is caring, hardworking, and deeply dedicated to student success. To celebrate their incredible impact, our administration team has designed a plan to share our appreciation every single week for the rest of the school year, perfectly complementing the wonderful activities our fabulous PTA already has in store! We are asking for the community’s support in this effort by providing items through our SignUp Genius . Through your generosity, we can ensure our staff feels the love and appreciation they deserve through the very last day of school. Thank you for your continued support of our White Oaks team!

Have a great weekend!

Principals' Message Hello White Oaks Community,

We hope to see a great turnout tonight to support our sixth graders at the students versus staff basketball game! This should be a positive event filled with fun and community building.

Wednesday was Administrative Professionals Day, and we are lucky to have five fabulous individuals to celebrate at White Oaks. Mrs. Martinos, Ms. Buffington, Mrs. Onks, Ms. Comfort, and Ms. Carrasco give their best every day to support our school, staff, families, and students. Their dedication, flexibility, and caring nature make White Oaks an amazing school.

Last Saturday, we had seven of our sixth-grade students perform in the Fairfax County All-County Chorus concert. We are grateful to Ms. Gridneva for supporting our students during this amazing opportunity.

As we shared last week, we celebrated our military-connected students during the Purple Up breakfast. During that time, we shared a very heartwarming video providing our military-connected students a chance to tell their story in their own words. It is a powerful reminder of the unique perspectives and strengths within our student body. Thank you to Mrs. Orr for her efforts toward making the video. We encourage you to take a few minutes and view the Purple Up video and the message our students have to share.

Have a great weekend!

Principals' Message Hello White Oaks Community,

Another positive week filled with positive activities is concluding at White Oaks! It is a joy to reflect on the energy and dedication that define our school.

The book fair has been a wonderful success thanks to the tireless efforts of Mrs. Darling and Mrs. Phillips. Their organization and passion for literacy have inspired our students and provided them with some wonderful new resources. We are also incredibly proud of the Purple Up Breakfast. It was an amazing and wonderful celebration of our military connected students and their families. As always, the PTA did a fabulous job making this event special, ensuring our military families feel the deep appreciation they deserve.

Have a great weekend!

Elementary Early Release Wednesday Update for April

Tuesday, April 21, is now a teacher workday and staff development day because of a recently announced special election that will impact all FCPS schools.

Students will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.

This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days.

Read Dr. Reid’s letter to elementary parents for more details.

Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

Learn more about how to support your child and why test participation matters .

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time! Please note that the White Oaks Kindergarten Orientation is being rescheduled for May 13th.

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage .

Principals' Message Hello White Oaks Community,

It has been a productive short week, and we are looking forward to returning to a full schedule next week. As we enter the fourth quarter, we will begin administering end-of-year assessments. These evaluations provide vital data that highlights the incredible progress our students have made this year.

Please find the SOL schedule for grades 3–6 below. We kindly ask that you avoid scheduling trips, appointments, or early dismissals on these dates. Our goal is to maintain a calm, focused environment to minimize stress for our students during testing. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

On Wednesday, several of our talented students showcased their artwork to the Lake Braddock community at the Pyramid Art Show. A huge thank you to Mrs. Mosios and Ms. Ko for facilitating this wonderful opportunity. We truly have some incredible artistic talent at White Oaks!

Principals' Message Hello White Oaks Community,

It is difficult to believe that we have already reached Spring Break and the conclusion of the third quarter. Before we know it, we will be looking back on the year wondering where the time went.

We had a very exciting surprise event this week at White Oaks. Mrs. Haile received the Outstanding New Teacher of Region 4 recognition this past Wednesday. It is a well deserved honor for her and a beautiful reminder of the amazing things happening daily at White Oaks thanks to our amazing staff.

The Watch DOGS program kicked off this week and we had two amazing volunteers come in to support the students and staff. This initiative is designed to bring fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father figures into our school to provide positive male role models and show our students just how much we value their education. As a volunteer, you are not just a guest; you are a Hero for the Day. You will spend the day supporting school activities, helping with security, and engaging with students in a fun and meaningful way.

We have one day available, Thursday, April 23, for this school year. If you are interested, please use the link below to sign up. If you are not available, we will have more opportunities next year.

Principals' Message Hello White Oaks Community,

It has been another unpredictable week of weather that certainly kept us on our toes! As we approach Spring Break at the end of next week, we are looking forward to some smooth sailing ahead.

Despite the shifting schedule, this week was packed with excitement, from the energy of the Eagle Trot and a visit from some mischievous leprechauns to the impressive learning happening in our classrooms every day.

The PTA Eagle Trot was an enormous success with over 100 participants! We were even honored to welcome FCPS Superintendent Dr. Reid to join the festivities. It was a fabulous day, and the joy on the course was contagious.

We also want to extend our sincere gratitude for your flexibility and support regarding this week’s two 3-hour early releases. We recognize that schedule inconsistencies can be challenging for families, and we appreciate your partnership.

Finally, while we all wore green on Tuesday to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, some tiny visitors decided to cause some chaos in our primary classrooms! Despite some very clever traps and a lot of effort, our students report that the leprechaun remains at large.

We hope everyone enjoys the long weekend. Happy Eid to all in our community who celebrate!

Have a POSITIVEweekend!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring.

We have some wonderful news to celebrate! This past weekend, a group of our White Oaks students competed in the Virginia Scholastic Chess Championship. They represented us beautifully, taking home 2nd place in the K–8 U1200 team section. This is a fantastic achievement for our students, and we are incredibly proud of their hard work and success.

Tomorrow morning is the PTA Eagle Trot, and the weather looks perfect for a run! We can’t wait to see everyone out there showing off their Eagle pride and getting active together. Registration opens at 8:30 AM, and the race kicks off at 9:00 AM. See you at the starting line!

Just a reminder that Wednesday, March 18th, is a scheduled 3-hour early release for White Oaks. Please keep an eye on your inbox this Monday, when we will send out emails confirming your student’s dismissal status for the afternoon.

There will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, for the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may proceed as scheduled.

Fairfax County Public Schools will still exceed the required number of instructional hours for students, as set by the Virginia Department of Education.

Have a POSITIVEweekend!

Principals' Message Hello White Oaks Community,

We have enjoyed a remarkable week filled with special events that highlight the vibrant spirit of our community! Last Friday, the PTA hosted a fabulous Bingo Night at Lake Braddock Secondary School. The event was incredibly well-attended, and it was wonderful to see so many families enjoying themselves. A huge shout-out goes to Mr. Hartzell for his fantastic work as the Master of Ceremonies, and a sincere thank you to the many staff members who came out to show their support.

The momentum continued into the weekend as our White Oaks orchestra students took the court at George Mason University. They delivered a stunning performance of the National Anthem, and it was truly inspiring to see our students rise to the occasion on such a large stage. We are so grateful for the outstanding leadership and teaching of Mr. Johnson-Stawarz and Mr. Bixler, who provided our students with this wonderful opportunity to perform publicly and showcase their hard work.

On Sunday, our community gathered for a deeply meaningful cause as the PTA hosted the Paxton Kolb Rock Painting Birthday Party. Paxton was a very special student who loved painting rocks with his family; to honor what would have been his 9th birthday on February 20, the community came together to create beautiful additions for his Kindness Garden. We extend a heartfelt thank you to the PTA for ensuring that Paxton’s legacy of kindness continues to thrive within our school.

Finally, we wrapped up our week of celebrations on Wednesday with our annual Multicultural Night. It was a spectacular evening that truly honored the diverse cultures that form our White Oaks family. From the interactive stations and global cuisine to the brilliant live performances, the night was a beautiful reflection of our community. We are incredibly appreciative of the committee for making the evening both educational and entertaining, with a steadfast focus on creating a true sense of belonging for everyone.

Have a POSITIVEweekend!

National PTA School of Excellence

Nominations Committee

We are still seeking nominations for PTA positions. There are several vacant positions and we need your help to have a successful PTA next year. Looking to know a little more about the roles? Listen to what a few of our current board members have to say:

  • "I really enjoy working closely with our admin team to have input and make decisions about our school, that comes with any board position.  As far as fundraising goes, I love partnering with area businesses and finding creative ways to make money. It’s exciting when we have a successful event because that money can be used to fund a free, community-building event for our school. I love making connections and bringing people together and I’m looking forward to sharing all I’ve learned with our next VP of fundraising. " -Allie Shrieves, VP of fundraising
  • "I've loved the camaraderie not just with my fellow board members, but with the committee chairs, admin team, and White Oaks staff. I feel that I'm truly part of a community/village. To see how much everyone really loves and cares has ignited and encouraged me to engross myself more into it.  I've learned that everyone has something special to offer or contribute to our community! People want to help but often need to be personally invited or asked. We worked so hard to learn guidelines, regulations, and ask questions. We've learned a lot and are eager to share with our new board members so they can be successful as they transition in and build on our momentum." -Christina Taylor, PTA President
  • "Walking down the halls and seeing people/students I would never have really known, and now having a relationship/closeness to them has been heartwarming. I like being able to see students and being recognized by them, seeing teachers and staff and feeling like we are on the same side working towards the same goal. It's rewarding to know that I can and am able to make positive changes instead of just talking about it. It's empowering and what makes the White Oaks community like nothing else. Even though I may not be officially in the role next year, I am always a text away to help out.  You are not alone in this. I am not here just for the success of the PTA/school, but for YOU as well."- Natalie Ledford, Communications Secretary
  • "The PTA Treasurer role is one of the most important positions we have — there’s no PTA without someone keeping the books — but it’s also one of the most flexible. The bookkeeping can be done on your own time, whenever works for you, and typically runs about 2-3 hours a month outside of regular PTA meetings. There are a number of moving parts to keep track of, but once you get a feel for the rhythm of it, it’s very manageable. And you won’t be starting from scratch — I’ll be available to answer questions and walk you through anything that comes up, for as long as you need. If you’ve been looking for a way to make a real contribution without locking yourself into a rigid schedule, this is a great fit. Feel free to email me if you have any questions!" -Lauren Risi, Treasurer
  • "Being Vice President of School Support has been such a wonderful experience. I loved working with both the admin team as well as the PTA this year. I helped support both groups by coordinating communication between them. My work felt both manageable and meaningful. I will absolutely be here to support anyone interested in taking over my role!" - Liz Casteel, VP of School Support
  • "Serving as the Recording Assistant for the PTA has truly been such a joyful  experience for me. I have especially enjoyed being part of the board and working alongside such dedicated parents and staff who care deeply about our school community. It has taught me how much every voice matters, and I’m grateful to play a small role in helping strengthen that connection.

One of the most positive things I’ve learned is how much thoughtful planning, collaboration, and heart goes into every decision made to support our students and teachers. Even in a role that may seem behind the scenes, I’ve seen how keeping clear records, supporting events, and helping ensure everyone’s voice is heard truly matters. I would encourage anyone who is considering getting involved to join the PTA being part of the board is not only rewarding, but also a beautiful way to build community and make a meaningful impact together."- Massiel Lopez, Recording Secretary

Principals' Message Hello White Oaks Community,

We were so close to a full week! Winter seems determined to keep things interesting, and with another system potentially arriving early next week, we want to thank you for your continued flexibility.

Wednesday night’s 5th and 6th-grade band concert was a delight. It was impressive to see how much our students have grown musically this year. This success is a direct result of Ms. Stratil's commitment. Her support has helped our students gain immense confidence and skill, and the smiles on their faces said it all.

We hope you will join us tonight as we head over to Lake Braddock Secondary School for PTA Bingo Night. The fun kicks off at 6:00 PM in the cafeteria (please enter through Door 15). This is historically one of our most popular events, so get ready for an epic night of prizes and community spirit!

Have a POSITIVE weekend!

Melanie, Neena, & Josh

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Paxton Kolb Rock Painting Birthday Party POSTPONED to NEXT SUNDAY, March 1

We invite our WOES community to remember and celebrate Paxton Kolb, a very special student we lost, who loved to paint rocks with his family. His birthday rock painting party will be this Sunday, March 1 from 2-3 pm on the WOES Playground under the white tent for rock painting. The whole family is encouraged to attend, play on the playground, or join in the festivities! Please RSVP by February 27 if you plan to attend so we have enough rock painting supplies and brownies.

If there is inclement weather again, the rock painting party will be rescheduled for a future date.

Though the week was short, it was incredibly successful! We want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on our outstanding cafeteria team .Every single day, they work tirelessly to provide our students with nutritious meals, a sparkling clean environment, and a welcoming space to recharge. They do it all with genuine smiles and a deep commitment to our students’ well-being. We are very fortunate to have them on the White Oaks Team!

Looking ahead, next week is a full schedule packed with community highlights. The Winter Band Concert is on Wednesday. On Friday, the PTA hosts the popular Bingo Night at Lake Braddock Secondary School, followed by a special performance by the White Oaks Orchestra at the George Mason basketball game on Saturday. These are wonderful opportunities to support our school if your schedule allows!

We are excited to announce that White Oaks will soon be using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

Have a POSITIVE weekend!

Please RSVP by February 19 if you plan to attend so we have enough rock painting supplies and brownies.

Principals' Message Hello White Oaks Community,

Between a snow day and four consecutive 2-hour delays, this week may have set a new record! Despite the unusual schedule, it was a successful week of welcoming the students back and they did a nice job being flexible and adapting to the change.

Today, we held our second lockdown drill alongside our 'Souper Bowl' canned food drive, and both were a resounding success. The students took the drill very seriously and followed all safety procedures perfectly. We are incredibly proud of them. As for the Souper Bowl results, the White Oaks student body has spoken: they are predicting a Seattle Seahawks victory this weekend!

In the spirit of welcoming our students, it is the perfect time to recognize Mrs. Mejia and Mrs. Bush. This week is National School Counseling Week, and we are incredibly fortunate to have two of the very best at White Oaks. Every day, they go above and beyond to ensure our students feel a true sense of belonging and are emotionally ready to learn. They are equally dedicated to our staff and community, always offering a helping hand or a supportive ear. We are so grateful for the positive energy they share with us daily!

Have a POSITIVE weekend!

Melanie, Neena, & Josh

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

FCPS CARES

Has a White Oaks staff member gone above and beyond for your child or family? If so, we invite you to recognize their efforts through the  FCPS CARES Program . This program allows parents and community members to celebrate employees who demonstrate exceptional care for their students, colleagues, and the community. Please share your story below to help us acknowledge the dedicated staff members who make White Oaks so special.

Meal Kits for Fasting Students

From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit. The first deadline is Wednesday, February 11, for the week of February 16. Please note other important details below:

  • Cost:Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
  • Pickup:Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
