ASVAB Test Information

ASVAB tests identify career areas that match students' skills

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a free test that helps identify areas of strength and match students' skills to potential careers. The ASVAB test can be used to serve several purposes.

Purpose of ASVAB Testing

High schools in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provide students access to this test as part of a career exploration program . After the test, students receive a customized score report and join a session explaining how scores can help identify potential career areas of strength.

The ASVAB is approved by the Virginia Board of Education as an option to fulfill industry credentialing  graduation requirements. Students using this industry credential must be part of a JROTC program. The ASVAB qualifying score needed for credential is determined by the military branch (revised May 17, 2023):

  • Air Force: 31
  • Army: 31
  • Coast Guard: 36
  • Marine Corps: 31
  • Navy: 31

The ASVAB test can also be used for students seeking enlistment in the military. These students may join a test session scheduled at their school or may test at their military recruiter's office.  The ASVAB score required to enlist in the military varies by branch, as do the qualifying scores for specific military career paths within each branch.

Under Virginia's School Performance and Support Framework, adopted in September 2024, students' performance on the ASVAB test can benefit their high schools' state accountability outcomes. Within the state's "3E Ready for Life" Framework, students scoring 31-49 on the ASVAB earn 0.5 points for the high school; students scoring 50-64 on the ASVAB earn 0.75 points; and students scoring 65 or higher on the ASVAB earn 1.0 points for their high school. For this accountability measure, each student counts just once, during their final year of high school. If the student tested multiple times, the high score is used.

Testing Notification and Opt-Out Form

High schools have the responsibility to notify families about the opportunity to take ASVAB tests. Parents/guardians may choose to opt-out of ASVAB testing by using the Parent Digital Consent application or by returning the form attached to the notification letter. The notification of testing and opt-out form can be accessed below with printable PDFs, including translations.

Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Career Exploration Program

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Your student has been identified for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) participation based on their enrollment this school year. The ASVAB is a free assessment and career planning tool used for career exploration, industry certification, military enlistment, and as part of school accountability. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) high schools give the ASVAB at least once each fall as part of career exploration programming for students based on course, program, or grade level enrollment. The ASVAB is available to students aged 16 and older in grades 10-12. The ASVAB, offered in online and paper formats, is a multiple-choice assessment designed to help students identify their strengths, interests, and potential career paths. See the ASVAB Test Information ( https://www.fcps.edu/asvab-test-information ) webpage for additional details.

The ASVAB is administered jointly by your student’s high school with the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). Certain personal information about your student will be shared with MEPS as part of the administration process: name, grade level, and birthdate. Additionally, student scores are shared with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) for school accountability calculations. However, neither student scores from the test nor their personal information are shared with military recruiters as part of ASVAB testing in FCPS. If your student chooses at a later date to explore military enlistment, you may authorize access for the recruiter at that time. The online test format requires students to use software not managed by FCPS, and students may be required to create an account

If you do NOT want your student to participate in the ASVAB test, please submit this decision using the Parent Digital Consent application( https://www.fcps.edu/family-resources/technology/digital-resources/consent ). This application uses your SIS ParentVUE login. If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE Account,  you may complete and return the form below to the school to communicate your decision to opt-out of ASVAB testing.

Additional Information for Parents/Guardians of Students with Disabilities:  Limited testing accommodations are available for students with disabilities when accessing the ASVAB. Results from accommodated tests cannot be accepted for military enlistment but still provide meaningful information to support students’ career exploration. If your student has an individualized education program (IEP) or 504 Plan with testing accommodations and you wish for your student to access accommodations on the ASVAB test, please review, sign, and return the enclosed accommodations disclosure consent form. This form can also be accessed with translations on the ASVAB Test Information ( https://www.fcps.edu/asvab-test-information ) webpage.

The ASVAB is being given at our school on ________________________. If you have any questions about this assessment, please contact the school’s college and career specialist (CCS) or assessment coach (AC).

TESTING ACCOMMODATIONS CONSENT FORM

Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) Career Exploration Program (CEP)

To Parents and/or Guardians of Students with Disabilities:

Students with disabilities who have testing accommodations documented in an individualized education program (IEP) or 504 Plan may be eligible for limited accommodations on Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) Career Exploration Program (CEP) testing. A table describing the available accommodations can be found in the enclosure to this letter.

Accommodations for the ASVAB assessment are limited and may not be provided without explicit parent/guardian consent.Students will receive accommodations that are consistent with those they regularly use during Standards of Learning (SOL) testing. However, not all SOL accommodations are available on the ASVAB test. Please be advised that the ASVAB assessment is created and governed by an external organization, the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). The test format and available accommodations are determined solely by MEPS and may differ from accommodations typically provided to students with disabilities by Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).

School personnel utilize each student's IEP or 504 Plan to determine their ASVAB accommodations. If an SOL accommodation is not available for the ASVAB, that specific accommodation cannot be provided for this assessment. Additionally, only students with a signed consent form will be able to access testing accommodations. When a student receives an ASVAB accommodation, the test record is marked as an accommodated test with MEPS. However, no further details about the student’s disability or the type of accommodation the student used are reported to MEPS.

Students receiving accommodations will be tested by designated school staff. All testing accommodations require students to use a paper format test. The paper format test is not adaptive and has more questions than the digital test. Note that results from accommodated tests cannot be accepted for military enlistment but still provide meaningful information to support students’ career exploration. If a student who used testing accommodations later chooses to apply for military enlistment, the student would be required to retake the test without accommodations for scores to be accepted.

If you wish for your student to access accommodations on the ASVAB test,  please review, sign, and return the form below. This form acknowledges your consent for school staff to disclose your student’s disability status externallyto MEPS for purposes of accessing testing accommodations. Without this signed consent form, your student will access the unaccommodated online test.

Information regarding ASVAB accommodations are available on the ASVAB Test Information webpage ( https://www.fcps.edu/asvab-test-information ). If you have questions regarding your student’s testing accommodations for ASVAB, please contact your student’s case manager or your school’s test coordinator.
