Lisa Choi, Fairfax Villa ES
"It is an honor to recommend Lisa Choi for her exceptional contributions as a Reading Specialist. Lisa is a master of her craft, combining high-level instructional expertise with an unparalleled commitment to families and staff. Lisa’s technical expertise is the backbone of our literacy department. She doesn't just "pull data"; she translates it into actionable success. Precision Planning: She is known for developing detailed, individualized reading plans, ensuring every student has a roadmap to success. Instructional Rigor: From leading intensive small-group interventions to hosting reading SOL “Bootcamps”, Lisa ensures students are prepared and confident. On-Site PD: Recognizing the heavy demands on teachers, Lisa hosts her own Professional Development (PD) sessions on-site. By bringing the training to our building, she saves staff from traveling to off-site locations, preserving planning time. Lisa is a powerhouse when it comes to securing resources and engaging the community. Educate Fairfax Grants: For two consecutive years, she has successfully won grants on behalf of our school. This year she is using funding to create literacy bags, specifically designed to strengthen the home-school literacy partnership. Experiential Learning: She makes reading "fun" through creative initiatives like the "Book Tasting" restaurant experience for Read Across America and hosting Literacy Nights in conjunction with our book fair. Community Fundraising: Lisa bridges the gap between the school and the local community by personally setting up Barnes & Noble fundraisers to enrich literacy outside of school. Lisa plays a vital role in supporting new educators: Lisa’s leadership was on full display when a new-to-school teacher arrived to attend benchmark training before their contract had even officially begun. Lisa met this teacher with generous expressions of gratitude and support, providing the mentorship and warm welcome necessary to help a new colleague feel confident and valued from day one. Staff Morale: She is known for "random acts of kindness," such as purchasing pizza and cookies for the staff to keep spirits high. Lisa’s dedication to her students is deeply personal. Direct Student Support: Year after year, Lisa purchases a book for every student in her small groups out of her own pocket, ensuring they have high-quality literature at home. Parental Partnership: She maintains consistent contact with parents, providing regular, meaningful updates on student progress for every child who has a reading plan. Her communication ensures that parents are never "in the dark" and feel like true partners in education. Lisa Choi is the rare educator who balances the rigorous data requirements of a Reading Specialist with a deeply compassionate heart. She is an invaluable asset to our school, our staff, and—most importantly—our students."

"As an administrator I could not let today go by without submitting this FCPS Cares for a staff member that changing my day whenever I reach out. Since I began my administrative career in 2011, Ms. Trinca has been an indispensable resource, supporter, and partner in ensuring the success of my work and the well-being of my school community. She has always taken the time to answer phone calls, respond to inquiries, and provide thoughtful guidance—no matter how complex the issue or how busy her schedule. Her professionalism is unwavering, and her ability to remain calm, supportive, and solutions-oriented is unmatched. One of Ms. Trinca’s greatest strengths is her ability to encourage and uplift others. In a role that can be challenges as you often listen to employees’ darkest moments and administrators’ frustrations, she has a unique talent for reassuring administrators that they are capable, prepared, and not alone. She has helped me navigate some of the most difficult situations in a school setting by offering not only procedural guidance but also emotional support. She provides resources that are both practical and strategic, ensuring that I am equipped to address every scenario with confidence. What sets her apart even further is her dedication to accessibility and follow-through. She is always available, and she makes herself fully present for those who seek her assistance. She goes beyond the expected by recognizing when someone needs more than a quick response—she will walk you step by step through a process, ensure that every detail is addressed, and confirm that follow-up occurs. Her reliability creates a sense of stability and trust that is invaluable in our work. Additionally, Ms. Trinca possesses an extraordinary memory. She recalls past challenges I have faced and leverages that knowledge to strengthen and prepare me for future endeavors. Min-Jung Jung, Hughes MS

“Have you seen or met the most dedicated & patient educator who commits to the epitome of excellence every day? No one can ask for a better colleague and an educator than Ms. Jung! Not only is she compassionate & kind, but she is also the ultimate representation of equitable practices. As a ML & math leader, she mentors & supports other educators by sharing her expertise & unwavering passion for teaching minority students who come from the most diverse cultural, linguistic, & religious backgrounds. It became clear to Ms. Jung, even before she embarked on her journey as an educator, that her own personal story as a young Korean-speaking newcomer student had shaped her vision in transforming the schooling experience into a positive one for the minority students. In our school’s Hall of Nations, Ms. Jung faithfully does her duty to greet and protect each student as the super-heroine with an invisible cape that says, “I CARE!” in Korean and English! As the classroom teacher, she projects the most welcoming and genuinely caring personality with the warmest smile on her face as students start their days at school. Ms. Jung sets the goal of maintaining a strong home-school connection, and she thrives in her role as the MLL Department chair and lead ESOL/MLL teacher. Other than tackling her major job roles as a school-based leader and a math teacher, she also oversees all the correspondences and logistics related to ML office and the various schools in region 5 & the South Lakes Pyramid, various school departments & offices, admin and central office staff, and the ML students’ families. Additionally, Ms. Jung is in charge of a plethora of job-related tasks including but not limited to tedious paperwork, meetings, data collection & analysis, WIDA Test preparation & administration, Math MAP SOL testing, trainings, and many other extra-curricular operations. This cannot be seen as an easy feat as she needs to wear so many hats to fulfill a countless influx of responsibilities. Ms. Jung's level of dedication to our school community is legendary; she has tirelessly formed and fortified the bridge as the successful liaison with the minority students’ families. Her heavy involvement in most school events to promote family engagement is an essential component for our school’s tremendous success and growth in performance among the ML students. For example, as the department chair & a school leader, her attention to the most minute details & keen sense of collaboration with admin, faculty, student services and parent liaisons help propel her to host many school-based and family-oriented events such as ESOL Family Town Hall meetings, Coffee Talks, and Curriculum Night, year after year... The WIDA test results for ML students from the previous school year (2024-2025) have shown a tremendous level of achievement in their English language proficiency. To put things in perspective, 44 out of the 205+ ML students (in both 7th & 8th grades) had successfully exited the ESOL program. The ML graduation rate was 21.5%, and this meant 1 out of every 5 ML students had exited! Ms. Jung had sacrificed her own personal time by spending hundreds of hours (no exaggeration here) to collaborate with the school’s STC to plan for strategic programs to advance the ML students’ acquisition of both expressive & interpretive language skills. She helps all the stakeholders, students, and families understand everyone’s critical role in fulfilling their duties to support the ML population to achieve the high expectations that she has set for every single ML learner. Ms. Jung is the type of teacher and colleague you enjoy being in the classroom with because: She has the patience of Mother Teresa; She shows the high level of care and love for teaching (like Anne Sullivan); She never loses sight of equitable practices and fairness by affirming each individual student’s unique learning style & needs; She sets exemplars for other teachers of how she applies her daily practice for empowering motivating the ML students who are historically seen as unsuccessful learners by showing that she is the teacher who believes in them; She embraces the best practices & teaching strategies in the AVID & IB programs by forming strong partnerships with the coordinators to promote affirmative & equitable learning opportunities; She works tirelessly to provide mentorship & guidance to colleagues who seek her extra support; She strives to build strong relationships with the ML students’ families by fostering their involvement in the school community. Even after committing herself to the same school community for more than two decades, she has never lost her pace or sight of her mission in promoting positivity in each student who walks through her classroom door. Ms. Jung has fought long and hard for minority students’ equitable rights to have accessibility to learn in the least restrictive environment (albeit their different education background and/or schooling experience), for example, by incorporating the UDL principles and utilizing appropriate educational tools to provide appropriate classroom accommodations. Ms. Jung's life mission as an educator has always been to ensure that all ML students CAN be affirmed as valuable school members. Through her craft of creating the warmest and most welcoming classroom environment, not only does she promote an appreciation for all learners to try their best, but she also fosters a strong sense of belonging to our school as "Proud Panthers." Besides being a strong advocate for equitable practices, the true quality lies in Ms. Jung’s humility, which makes her stand out among the extremely highly effective teachers. It is truly about time that she finally gets recognized for her most valuable contributions to our school community and also to FCPS as an exemplary employee who has made a huge difference & a long-lasting impact!!!”

“We are thrilled to give a special shout-out to Catherine, Melissa, Noel, and the entire Bailey’s Elementary First Grade Team for their incredible commitment to fostering a learning environment that extends far beyond the classroom and for ensuring their students put what they are learning into meaningful action. This recognition is specifically for their outstanding "Kids Helping Kids’ soup kits" Community Service Project, which was brilliantly tied to their Benchmark Unit 3 study focusing on Community. The project was not just an assignment; it was a lesson in active citizenship that began with the students themselves. Following discussions on being responsible citizens and helping our community, the first graders took the initiative to write letters to our parent liaisons asking what the Bailey’s community needed. This inspired the wonderful idea of providing food assistance, and once they decided on soup, the donations came pouring in! The team beautifully integrated this service project into their curriculum. The reading of the classic tale "Stone Soup" provided a powerful narrative to connect the students' service work with themes of community generosity, which directly inspired their efforts. The students’ passion resulted in an overwhelming success! The community donations were phenomenal, with 300 pounds of beans and over 160 cans of tomatoes collected, a true testament to the project's broad appeal. Our first graders then became hands-on volunteers, assembling the soup kits complete with recipe instruction stickers. For a personal touch, the students each made a label for a soup kit. The team organized delivering kits to the family center and distributing them to our Bailey’s Family just in time for the holidays. The entire process was truly a community effort, as the team received several parent volunteers who dedicated their time to help the students put together the soup kits. By connecting their classroom learning to this tangible act of service, the team has instilled an invaluable sense of empathy and civic responsibility in our young learners, making a significant, positive impact on our school community. Thank you, Catherine, Melissa, Noel, and the entire First Grade Team, for your ingenuity, dedication, and for showing our students that they are never too young to make a significant, tangible impact on the world around them. “I would love to give a special shout out to two incredible teachers Ms. Whitelaw and Ms. Hook who teach my son. It is so clear how deeply they know and care about him as an individual. They consistently make an effort to support him check in on his progress and keep us informed with thoughtful updates. My son truly feels seen and valued in their classroom and it shows. He hates missing school comes home excited to share what he has learned each day and eagerly talks about upcoming projects. Their dedication has had such a positive impact on his confidence and enthusiasm for learning. They even went above and beyond by coming to watch him at his taekwondo belt testing which absolutely blew him away and meant more to him than they could know. These two teachers make an incredible difference, and our family is so grateful for the care time and heart they put into what they do.”

“Lynda is not just a teacher; she is a community builder, a dedicated professional, and a true model of perseverance whose impact extends far beyond the classroom walls. Lynda’s greatest strength lies in her ability to build unbelievable connections with families, often gaining the trust of the most reluctant parents. She is an exceptional advocate, writing amazing individual goals and accommodations that precisely match her students’ unique needs. Lynda translates these goals into clear, actionable language, genuinely explaining to students what they need to work on and empowering them to take ownership of their learning. Lynda illuminates joy and uses a lot of humor in her instructional practice to reach students. The students absolutely adore her energy and stick to her like magnets. Her positive influence is enduring. Former students always stop by her classroom for a hug or a smile, demonstrating the lasting, safe relationship she fosters. Lynda goes above and beyond her assigned special education caseload. She is an active co-teacher and team member, consistently supporting the academic and emotional needs of all students. She further strengthens student relationships by organizing special lunch bunches to connect with her students in a relaxed setting and gives up weekly planning time to volunteer as a student mentor. Through her daily actions, Lynda is not only teaching crucial academics but also the invaluable lesson of kindness. Lynda Falkenstein is defined by her spirit of never giving up. She models extraordinary perseverance, notably by completing her master’s degree in special education last year while simultaneously working full-time and managing a demanding personal schedule. This included supporting her own twin children as they graduated high school and maintaining many volunteer roles in their school community. On top of her teaching duties, Lynda is committed to staff well-being, taking staff morale seriously as the President of Bonnie Brae's Sunshine Committee. She is a dedicated professional and a model teacher whose passion for community building, student connection, and unwavering commitment.”

"Mr. Tenenbaum, or as my son knows him, “Mr. T” is an extraordinary special education teacher. I am parent to a nine year old twice exceptional student at Springfield Estates. I have also been an FCPS teacher for 24 years and have taught in cotaught classrooms as well as advanced level high school classrooms. I understand in a unique way the demands of the special education teacher and its challenges, but also can recognize unique skill when I encounter it.It’s hard to put into words what exactly Mr. T does that makes him exceptional because as an educator, I’m always reflecting what attributes and behaviors and practices make an outstanding teacher. And I think ultimately, it comes down to who he is as a person. Mr. T is one of the most deeply reflective practitioners I have ever encountered. Every time I have a conversation “debrief” with Mr. T about my child on the phone about this week or the next, I am awestruck at how deeply he listens and ponders the information. Each new piece of information that I communicate as a parent rests upon a few fundamental beliefs that he shows: The parent is the expert of the child and this point of view, even if different from his own, is always deeply respected The teacher is in a mutually respected relationship with the parent and both individuals work for the good of the student. I don’t know ultimately how you teach this or pass this belief system onto new Special Education teacher. I think it rests upon who he is fundamentally. What sets him apart from other special education teachers is not necessarily his craft and understanding of how to maneuver students with autism (although his understanding is exceptional), but it is his genuine love and concern for his students. Parents feel safe in entrusting their students to his care because his concern and attention shows the same regard for who their child is: their strengths, their struggles, their humanity. In a society that commonly dismisses students with autism as either a nuisance or a bother, Mr. T reminds us that some people are in our corner. And we are less tired, less desperate, and less cynical as a result. Teachers like Mr. T remind us parents of neurospicy kiddos that we do not have to shoulder this alone and that they are with us as we navigate this daunting task."

"Tatiana oversaw the transport of four full racks of food from Mason Crest and directed the transfer to the freezer at Falls Church High School, ensuring the food was stored safely and preserved for future service. While managing this time-sensitive transfer, she also thought ahead to operational continuity: she placed Monday’s breakfast items inside the reach-in refrigerator at Mason Crest, following the planned menu, so the kitchen staff would not face a Monday morning disruption. Throughout the incident, Tatiana maintained calm, clear, and proactive communication with all parties involved. She provided real-time updates as the situation progressed, outlined next steps for Monday’s follow-up (including checking freezer temperatures and coordinating potential rack returns), and ensured the distribution kitchen and school teams had precise instructions to resume normal operations smoothly. Tatiana’s actions directly prevented significant food loss, protected program resources, and ensured that students would continue to receive meals without interruption. Her willingness to step in immediately, problem-solve under pressure, and lead by example on her personal time, speaks volumes about her dedication to our students and our mission. Tatiana is an invaluable member of the FNS leadership team. This incident is a powerful reflection of her professionalism, accountability, and unwavering commitment to service. We are incredibly proud to have her as part of our team and deeply grateful for the leadership she demonstrates every day."

"In honor of School Counseling Week, I would like to recognize Bryant’s four Super Hero School Counselors: Marie Harley, Ameen Jackson, Stephanie Lemus-Ortiz, and Margaret Veenstra. Each brings their own unique strengths and gifts to the program and to the students they serve, and together they collaborate to build a strong, comprehensive school counseling program. Between Wellness Day, the College Partnership Program, Career Fair, postsecondary readiness, transcript evaluation, and meeting the social and emotional needs of students, they consistently bring forward strong programming and fierce advocacy for every learner. Their work ensures that students are supported academically, socially, and emotionally, and that no student falls through the cracks. This year, they secured a grant from Educate Fairfax to address chronic absenteeism by providing incentives and engaging students in meaningful conversations about the critical role attendance plays—both in school and in life. Bryant is incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated, compassionate, and student-centered counseling team. Happy School Counseling Week to four exceptional advocates for students."

"Erin joined our team midyear two years ago as a Special Education Instructional Assistant, and from day one she jumped right in as if she had always been part of our school family. She goes above and beyond her job description in countless ways, always putting students and colleagues first. Erin willingly steps in to cover classes, pulls intervention and lunch groups, mentors students, and supports wherever help is needed—often without being asked. What truly sets Erin apart is the genuine relationships she builds. She forms strong, meaningful connections with all the students she supports and continues to check in on and care about students she worked with in past years. Students light up when they see her; her constant smile, positive attitude, and “skip in her step” make her a joyful and trusted presence in our building. Erin also creates a culture of kindness and teamwork among staff. She is always looking for ways to help—whether it’s giving a colleague a quick break to run to the bathroom or showing up with a Diet Coke on a tough day. She consistently goes out of her way to support others, making our school a better place to work and learn. Erin is exceptional at supporting our special education students and embodies what it means to CARE—for students, colleagues, and the entire community."

"Heather and Jillian have done an amazing job this year of supporting teachers and students with disabilities in the area of literacy. They have created resources, developed guidance documents, and held trainings to ensure students are getting access to evidence based literacy instruction. Together, they have also been very available for meetings with schools (individual teachers, administration teams, and more) to make sure they are feeling supported as we all move forward with the state literacy initiatives. Heather and Jillian both devote a large amount of their time to these efforts and it has been incredibly beneficial for the county as a whole. With their energy spearheading these efforts, so many students are receiving rigorous, evidence based literacy instruction targeted based on present levels and current needs. Their devotion to reading access for students hasn't gone unnoticed!"

"I want to send a shout out to William Viands, plumber supervisor based at the Herndon Support Center. Food Services recently learned the Herndon MS garbage disposal broke down and needed replacing. William immediately responded to my work order letting me know a new unit had been ordered once received 'will install asap.' Due to a shipping error by the vendor the wrong unit was shipped, but William even then kept me up to date. He was kind, professional, diligent and extremely communicative throughout the entire process. He sent me an email today stating the new (correct) unit was now installed and working properly. He even added a 'thank you' to the school's Kitchen Manager and me for our patience and understanding throughout this process. Wow! William is definitely a great collaborator and communicator. I / we appreciate YOU, William."

"I would like to recognize and thank members of the Special Education Teacher Support program, Special Education Instruction, and the Office of Professional Learning for their flexibility and professionalism during the January 29th Staff Development training day. When the training shifted to a virtual format, the team quickly adjusted content to ensure sessions were effective in virtual spaces. Throughout the day, presenters adapted to participant needs and requests in real time. They maintained a positive, solutions-oriented, “can-do” attitude despite the rapid changes. Their commitment ensured high-quality professional learning and reflects the best of FCPS."

"Ms. Hale went above and beyond to help me, and by extension our student-athletes, for a recent meet registration. On a Sunday afternoon and into the evening, Ms. Hale answered questions and assisted me with her knowledge of the meet program to register my team. Ms. Hale and I don't work at the same school or even in the same region (and we've not met in person) but her commitment to student-athletes, varsity swimming & diving, and FCPS athletics made a world of difference last week. What stands out most is the genuine care Mr. Downey shows - not just for academic progress, but for our son as a whole learner. "Catalina Steriade has been instrumental in our Science Department. She has served as one of our Science Fair Coordinators, and currently serves as our Physics CT Lead, welcoming our new teachers and continuing to engage and support those who have been in the department for years. I have had extensive personal discussions with one of the new teachers that she has mentored this year, and it is outstanding to see his comfort within our school, within his content, and the overall difference that she has made in his first year of teaching through solely her mentoring and support. However, my submission of this FCPS Cares is was not prompted solely by her mentorship of this new teacher: because of both building and staff needs, Catalina was recently asked to take charge of a completely new class of students, changing her own class schedule mid-year. I do not say this lightly when I say that Catalina has taken on the role with the grace and initiative of a master teacher. She has updated me on her plans for the course, which includes tirelessly condensing a year's worth of material into a few weeks, all while continuing to mentor the teachers who have been with the students the entire year. To do this without complaint, without hesitation, all for the sake of ensuring that our students get a quality education -this not only ensures that I can not only tend to the other needs of our department as Science Department Chair, but also that our staff and students have the support that they need and deserve. I am fully confident that our students will learn more and progress in their high school careers with Catalina's guidance as their teacher. "Dr. Goodloe consistently goes above and beyond to support students, and I am incredibly grateful for the impact she has had on my life. When I was notified—on very short notice—that I needed a recommendation letter for the Harry F. Byrd Jr. Leadership Award, she immediately stepped in and wrote an exceptionally thoughtful and powerful letter despite the tight turnaround. She approached it with genuine care and a true desire to help me succeed. During my interview in Richmond, the committee opened by asking about my relationship with her. They shared that her letter stood out immediately and even referenced a specific line she crafted as being especially memorable. For an award with less than a 1% acceptance rate, Dr. Goodloe’s letter was the pivotal turning point in my selection as a recipient. It was clear that she invested significant time and heart into the letter, far beyond what anyone would expect under such circumstances. What makes her support even more meaningful is that it reflects a relationship that goes back many years. Dr. Goodloe was my elementary school principal, and she played a central role in supporting me as a young student managing severe food allergies and a 504 plan. She always ensured I felt safe, included, and understood—proactively working with staff and with my family to create a school environment where I could thrive academically and socially. The same level of attentiveness and compassion she showed then continues today. Dr. Goodloe’s dedication, empathy, and unwavering commitment to her students truly embody the spirit of ICARE. "When snow day called for Fairfax County Public Schools to close, Annandale Terrace Elementary School’s news team didn’t stop. Monday, January 26, 2026, FCPS closed all buildings but the ATTV (Annandale Terrace TV) morning news media team consisting of Ashley Ireland, Jamiah Harrison and Maria Pezzuti, created a morning news content and the YouTube vide link was shared with the community so the students and families can still feel connected while at home. As we do daily at ATES morning live news, the weather, the pledge, and national day was announced but this time with our 3 administrators (Principal Badia, Assistant Principals Scher and Raynor) as the news anchors outside in the snow at their location. Most importantly, information on how to access Schoology to continue learning at home even when they can’t physically be at school was shared so the families can help students continue to learn at home. Thank you to all who helped to create this content to bring extra smiles to the ATES community on this snow day. It sure brightened my morning watching this at home!"

When our department had to search for a long-term sub (the day before school started), Scott pulled together materials and lesson plans to start the year. As we transitioned to two additional long-term subs, Scott has been the anchor to provide these students with stability and a point of contact to maintain. He not only leads the lessons in his team-taught classes with our long term sub, he also provides lesson plans and materials for the classes he doesn't even team teach with! In addition to being invested in her students, teaching thoughtful lessons that leave an impact, building a rapport full of humor and connection with her classes, and writing dozens of thoughtful college recommendation letters, Ms. Goodrick also supports her students outside of the classroom. On the first Saturday of summer break 2025, Ms. Goodrick attended my daughter's internship ceremony and attend her premier as a museum tour guide in D.C. My daughter and our family were so touched to have this special teacher/mentor join us for this event. She brought encouragement and positivity the whole day. To drive into D.C. traffic on your first summer weekend off in order to support a student shows dedication, care, and a love for the community and its students. "Nicki Thomas is my son's 3rd grade teacher. The transformation I have seen in his ability to take on knowledge, show his understanding, and in his confidence, is truly astounding. I know he has always had it in him, but it is her ability, skill, and commitment as a teacher that has allowed him to show this and flourish. I can't imagine if he wasn't lucky enough to get her this year. And she does this for every student, not just my son. She makes it her responsibility that every kid succeeds no matter what by making sure she understands the content, teaching explicitly and clearly, making sure students feel prepared for all assessments, and when students don't do well at first, she takes it as her responsibility to figure out why and help them to make sure they do get it. There are so many examples I could share, but just today there was an example of how she goes above and beyond. Our son will be out of town next week and he will take his math test early. She made sure to send home the study guide early and make a plan with me to make sure he felt prepared. I emailed her about how I noticed he did on the study guide, and she immediately responded with how she has already gotten something prepared for the day to support him with this area in preparation for his test. 3rd grade is such a big transitional year, and our school is so lucky to have a teacher like her in 3rd grade. We can never thank her enough for her outstanding teaching and commitment to our son this year."

"Laura Leydon is the absolute spirit master of Robinson Secondary School. Every year, she runs a spirit point contest FOR TEACHERS throughout the school year, starting with a hilarious opening presentation on the last day of Professional Week and culminating in multiple "awards" including trophies at the end-of-year luncheon and an after-school ice cream social for participators. There is a list of activities + points, such as "participated in all dress up days of Homecoming Spirit Week", "attended 5 IEPs as a Gen Ed teacher," "mentor/buddy a new teacher," and ""add to the ROBO Family by getting engaged or married." She walks around school regularly and gives out "Booster Badges" on particular days or for certain events. Throughout the year, she also sends weekly birthday emails recognizing all employees who are having a birthday that week with trivia about them and encourages everyone to say happy birthday to those colleagues. (And she doesn't miss the summer birthdays; they get half-birthday emails in the winter months!) Laura always says that everything in school is geared toward students, and she wants to recognize the teachers. She always says that this is a big building, and you have to participate and get around to get to know everyone. She truly lives this messaging - she knows everyone, everyone knows her, and she brings every single person in this building joy. I feel like it is impossible to capture the impact that Laura has on Robinson Secondary. I am trying to give details and still feel like I'm barely making a dent in what she does day-in and day-out! Not to mention - she hand-writes every one of our 130+ students a birthday card, and not a generic one! A specific birthday card with notes about who that student is as a person, with an Oprah quote that she selects just for them. Laura loves Oprah, and Laura really IS the Oprah of Robinson. She is always saying - in a paraphrase of Oprah - that what everyone wants is to hear "I see you, I hear you, and you matter" and she goes above and beyond every day of the school year to make everyone feel that."

"I wish to nominate my colleague, Cindy Gagnon, for an FCPS CARES award. January and February are traditionally a very stressful time for teachers and students of Multilingual Learner support (formerly ESOL). During this time, we are preparing for our annual English fluency exam. Many students have taken the WIDA assessment many times over and are dreading another four days of demonstrating fluency in English reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It is easy for these students to feel singled out and misunderstood in a sea of English-only students who do not face such a yearly challenge. My colleague, Cindy Gagnon, set out this year to change the narrative on this exam. She almost single-handedly designed an event that would shine a bright light on the hard work and growth of Robinson Secondary’s ML students. During our RAISE intervention time, students used passes to dismiss down to an assembly hall festooned with balloons and colorful decorations. Each student was handed a hand-written, personalized note of encouragement, praise, and support from the faculty. She emceed the event, calling upon the schools’ principal and testing coordinator to make statements of praise and recognition to boost students’ pride and commitment to excel. She even designed and printed special t-shirts for those staff members responsible for delivering the WIDA assessment. They are so colorful and engaging, one might think WIDA was a fun club everyone should want to be a part of. As a final send-off, she arranged the purchase of more than 150 breakfast burritos for students to devour as they mingled with friends and teachers alike. It was a total success, and I believe it heartened students and inspired them to see how many other students like them are forging ahead to demonstrate their strength as multilingual students. Cindy showed them that she, that we, that our entire Robinson community cares about them and is rooting for their growth and their success."

"Kat Dingwall has been a phenomenal addition to the student services department at Robinson Secondary. In only her second year as a school counselor, Kat has dove head first into making positive changes in our school community and our students lives. She is the sponsor of Key Club and one of the staff representatives of the Equity team. She uses critical thinking, data and empathy to identity gaps and problem solve. "Dennis Michaels arrives early to school every day—often around 7:45 a.m.—and can be found outside setting up cones or in the gym preparing for the day. He is always willing to step in wherever help is needed: assisting in the office, covering classes, supporting lunch duty in the cafeteria, or even stepping into an administrative role during a crisis when needed. Dennis is consistently helpful and flexible for all events held in the gym, especially Bingo Night and Promotion. He and Lautaro set up the gym each Wednesday morning for the All-School Morning Meeting, ensuring everything is ready for students and staff. Last year, Dennis took on the advisory role as leader of our school SCA. He has modernized the voting and election process, remains open to new ideas, and regularly meets with students to discuss their roles in the school and upcoming events. This project requires extensive time, effort and care and our team has shared countless examples and continuous feedback about the tremendous assistance Lei, Hao and Jeremy provide. They all have a positive, "make it happen" attitude and they have been instrumental in progressing our project milestones. Countless examples arise from our Tyler Drive pilot, implementation and product planning, hardware installs and team trainings. Ms. Weintraub had a unique ability to bring everyone in my child's class together- they all sang a silly song at the end of the day. Little things like that bond a group of kids who may not all be "friends” but are all learning together in the same classroom; she connects really well with kids. Ms. Clark has worked hard to collaborate with me to ensure that the family understands the importance of these services for the student beyond high school and has worked tirelessly to persuade the student/family to take necessary action steps in applying for and receiving services. Ms. Clark has used her ability to apply compassion and understanding and her amazing gift for parent rapport to assist me in doing everything in my ability and expertise to help insure successful postsecondary outcomes. Without Ms. Clark, this student and many others within the MVHS community of learners and families would be underserved and ultimately underrepresented. "Saturday, January 10th marked the opening tip-off for the 2026 LMVSC Winter Rec Basketball season—a day we'd been eagerly anticipating. However, when our coaches arrived at Twain, they encountered an unexpected challenge: one gym had no chairs, and the other gym wasn't even unlocked. Fortunately, Mr. Amato, a Twain employee who was there to support some of his students, immediately stepped up to help. Without hesitation, he took it upon himself to unlock the gym and arrange for the chairs and tables needed in both facilities. His quick thinking and willingness to go above and beyond made all the difference. Without Mr. Amato's presence and cooperation, our opening tip-off would have been significantly delayed, and our young players would have had to stand on the sidelines when out of the game—hardly the positive start to the season we envisioned."

"I am writing to formally recognize and commend three exceptional members of my son’s special education team: Mrs. Yassine, his classroom teacher, and Ms. Iris and Ms. Saima, his instructional assistants. In early December, our family experienced a particularly difficult morning with him. Due to his distress, we were unable to use kiss-and-ride and instead walked him into the building. As a nonverbal autistic child, transitions can be especially challenging for him, and moments like these are emotionally heavy for families. What stood out was the immediate warmth and responsiveness we encountered upon arrival. Ms. Iris quickly stepped in to support his transition, and her calm, familiar presence helped him begin to settle and regain a sense of safety. That brief but meaningful interaction reflected the remarkable skill, compassion, and preparedness that this entire team demonstrates consistently, especially during challenging situations. Mrs. Yassine leads her classroom with exceptional thoughtfulness, structure, and care. She understands my son as a whole child and creates an environment that supports his academic, emotional, and developmental needs. Ms. Iris and Ms. Saima provide steady, patient, and deeply attuned support that allows him to access his school day with dignity and trust. Together, they function as a seamless team that exemplifies best practices in special education. Too often, educators are recognized only when concerns arise, rather than for the countless moments they navigate with professionalism, patience, and compassion. The impact of what this team does extends far beyond the classroom and into the well-being of families. "I am writing this FCPS Cares for Special Education Mentor coach Kate Hover. She has served as my 1st year teacher Mentor. I met Mrs. Hover before classes began in August. She is a clear communicator, an excellent resource provider, as well as having taught for 11 years. Combined with the Great Beginning classes, I was provided with the information and framework to begin to build class presentations. As I began teaching, there was so much more that I had to deal with like reevaluations, progress reports, and a multitude of forms. This is where Mrs. Hover helped me so much. I could ask her about certain procedures, and she was able to explain the process and provide me with accessible processes that I could reference later. I met with Mrs. Hover every few weeks and this has helped to keep me on track throughout this year. I am so grateful for her guidance and assistance. "I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for Enrique Fernandez (SOSA) from Hayfield Secondary. On November 24th, my son was involved in a serious car accident. Mr. Fernandez happened to be driving directly behind the person who caused the accident, and, without a moment’s hesitation, he stopped to help. Even though my son is a student at Lake Braddock Secondary School and not at Hayfield, Mr. Fernandez stayed by his side the entire time. My son was incredibly shaken, scared, and physically unwell after the impact; having a "guardian angel" there made all the difference. Mr. Fernandez didn’t just wait for the police; he acted as a bridge of safety, ensuring my son felt seen and supported during one of the scariest moments of our lives. He stayed at the scene until my husband, and I arrived, but his kindness didn't end there. He later followed up with a thoughtful email to check on my son’s recovery. This level of care highlights his true heart for all students, treating our son with the kind of love and concern one would show a family member. We cannot thank him enough for his selflessness; he is a hero in our eyes and an incredible asset to the Hayfield community."

"Ms. Avery has been a truly exceptional teacher for my daughter. My daughter was almost two grade levels behind prior to working with Ms. Avery and she is now on grade level and more confident in school than ever. Ms. Avery is patient and kind and meets all of her students where they are while being their biggest cheerleader at school. She listens to her students to find ways to inspire them and make the schoolwork interesting to them and truly connect the concepts to real-world applications. She also goes out of her way to make them feel valued and cared for, arranging lunch bunch gatherings, creating awards and recognition for them, attending their events outside of school to cheer them on, and seeking them out to check in on them routinely. She also does a wonderful job of keeping us informed on our daughter's progress and regularly sends us emails or calls to praise our daughter's hard work. She is also thoughtful and attentive to their concerns, no matter how small they may appear to others. For example, my daughter was inadvertently excluded from a class/grade activity. She and I both brought it to the teacher of her AM teacher (who is also wonderful), but it was forgotten about routinely until I mentioned it to Avery. She immediately took action to take care of it, followed up, and went out of her way to ensure it was remedied and my daughter was included. There have been many days when knowing she will see Ms. Avery is the only reason my daughter willingly goes to school and my husband, and I are so incredibly grateful for her impact on our daughter's education. We were concerned that she might never catch up to her peers before she began working with Ms. Avery and are blown away at her progress in the last year and a quarter. I have also seen Ms. Avery interact with her other students and show the same level of excitement and engagement with them as she does with my daughter. She is a truly wonderful person and teacher and Fort Hunt Elementary is incredibly fortunate to have her."

"Mr. Scott Devine, Hayfield Secondary's head of security is a tremendous addition to our faculty this school year! He immediately made an impact, quickly establishing highly effective and high-quality routines, along with building strong relationships with his staff, as well as the teachers, support staff, administration, SRO's and our student body across a campus nearly a quarter mile in size, with an enrollment of over 3,000 people. Mr. Devine also believes in high visibility, routinely walking the halls, interacting with staff and students alike, and maintains a positive attitude throughout the day. His impact has also been felt outside the building, which has challenges including having a sizeable amount of students who walk to school, through lanes of car and bus traffic, as well as a hectic Kiss and Ride/Drop off area in the rear/Middle School of the building that sees hundreds of students dropped off in the morning, and picked back up in the mid-afternoon. Additionally, Mr. Devine has created an efficient and impactful parking routine that minimizes stress for the staff and students alike, helping facilitate successful starts of day for most of each day's arrivals. Our hallways, which in years past, seemed to teem with challenges, feel less stressful this year, in no small part to Mr. Devine's presence. Overall, Hayfield's stress level is greatly diminished, and safety/security is enhanced in no small part due to Mr. Devine and his staff's presence in the hallways, at Open Gate, and on school grounds. Thank you, Mr. Devine, for your passion, dedication, and commitment to ensuring our student body's success, and safety at Hayfield Secondary School!"

Each of these individuals has made a significant and lasting difference in our school community through their compassion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to serving students and families. Bharat Chopra and Hawa Ali, the driver and bus aide for Bus #70, consistently go above and beyond the expectations of their roles. On multiple occasions this school year, when another driver left early without transporting all students—or declined to wait for some of our youngest special education students—Mr. Chopra and Ms. Ali stepped in without hesitation - multiple times! They took on additional students, extended their routes, and ensured that all children, including our two-year-old special education students with significant needs, were safely transported home as quickly as possible. Their actions were not driven by obligation, but by heart. They understood the importance of routine, safety, and timely arrival home for our most vulnerable learners and their families. The gratitude expressed by families was immense, and their trust in our school and transportation system was strengthened because of the care shown by Mr. Chopra and Ms. Ali. Their compassion and dedication truly embody what it means to put students first. Rachelle Wigenton, Manager of Transportation Operations, has also been an invaluable partner to our school. From the very beginning of the year, Ms. Wigenton proactively introduced herself and worked intentionally to build strong, collaborative relationships with the schools she supports. She is exceptionally accessible, responsive, and solution-oriented—qualities that have been essential as we navigated numerous transportation challenges involving multiple drivers, routes, and schedules. Ms. Wigenton has met with parents, administrators, and teachers to ensure that decisions are thoughtful, transparent, and centered on student needs. No matter the complexity of the situation, she approaches each challenge with professionalism, empathy, and a genuine desire to find solutions that best serve students, families, and schools. Her support has extended beyond daily operations; this past summer, she even collaborated with us to reconfigure our parking lot—successfully increasing staff parking while reducing bus congestion. "Emmanuelle has been an IA at Haycock for many years. She continues to go above and beyond each and every day in her current role as kindergarten IA. Her former students visit her daily. Older former students come from Longfellow and McLean HS to connect and share their recent experiences with her. She has also had former students come back to as both high school and college students to volunteer/ complete internship programs. These visits are a result of the trust and love she pours into the classroom community. Her students know she will love them forever! In the classroom, Emmanuelle runs the jobs board. By providing jobs for our youngest learners, she instills a sense of duty and pride. Her methodical record keeping ensures that each child will have a turn for each job, which is a big deal in kindergarten. She adds greatly to the class sense of community by using her personal time at home to create classroom books constructed of student work. These books are a favorite for young readers in the yellow classroom. Seeing their own work in a book on the shelves is a great motivator to budding authors. She also makes sure each child has a full "Birthday Bucket" on their special day by using her impressive drawing skills to design a one-of-a-kind Happy Birthday Drop covered in all the favorites (foods, sports, hobbies, interests, etc.) the birthday child has shared. Emmanuelle is known as the artist and the nature lover in the kindergarten hallway. She inspires children to tap into their creativity by sharing her love for arts and crafts. She teaches about nature each day by sharing videos from walks she takes with dog Bailey (who all the children know about and love) . She even brings in special 'finds' such as the current class caterpillar who has since made a cocoon and is now fondly referred to as "Candy". For the past 10 years each spring Emmanuelle brings in strawberry plants from her garden for each kindergartener who would like one. No doubt there are strawberry plants all over Falls Church which have come from the nurturing hands of Mrs. Paulston. It is with enthusiasm and love that I submit this FCPS Cares for Emmanuelle, because this recognition is more than deserved."

"This week, I’d like to nominate Jessica Martinez-Aldana for Mount Eagle’s Best of the Nest. Jessica is a product of our very own Mount Eagle Elementary School. Mount Eagle is her true home where she now works with some of her former teachers. I have had the privilege of working with Jessica for a few years and have enjoyed getting to know her. Jessica is one of our outstanding Kindergarten IAs. Although I don’t get to spend a lot of time with Jessica in the classroom, I have observed many of her undertakings and I know that she is vital to running a Kindergarten classroom. She arrives early each morning to get the classroom ready for the day and is one of the first faces that her students see in the morning when they get off the bus. Jessica puts in endless hours of prep work to make sure learning and play in the classroom go smoothly. She pulls small groups to make learning more meaningful and she does a fantastic job of stepping in as the classroom teacher when needed. Students and teachers alike depend on her because she is bilingual. There have been many instances where Jessica has assisted me in working with ML students and their families to help with homework and communication. She has this amazing, calm, but firm voice that tell her students that she means business but loves them at the same time. Not only does Jessica put forth much effort in the classroom, but she also is going to school for her bachelor’s and is a youth soccer coach at Lee Mount Vernon for young boys. "I wanted to submit this story for consideration for the FCPS Cares program, which highlights FCPS employees and community members who go above and beyond. The story involves Ms. Greene, who is a former EMS professional and is currently a 4th grade special education teacher at Fox Mill Elementary School. And Dan, who is also a former EMT. Both are South Lakes High School band parents (one of their children is an 11th grader on cymbals, and the other is a 9th grader on bass drum). This story took place in early December 2025 in Hawaii, at the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor, during a school band trip (photo attached). While waiting in line for food, an elderly woman from Minneapolis appeared faint. Dan noticed her condition and quickly helped move her out of the sun. Shortly after, the woman lost consciousness and Ms. Greene supported her, holding her in her lap while 911 was called. Dan and Ms. Greene stayed with her until EMS arrived. I was present when EMS arrived on the scene. Their calm, quick response and willingness to step in reflect the very best of the FCPS community."

We returned to the school around 6 PM to try to trace them using the Find My app. The Air Pods appeared to be behind a gated area of the school. We noticed Felicia and Quoc and explained our situation. They were kind, attentive, and willing to help us. They unlocked the gate and helped us track the Air Pods. They were so helpful and friendly. We appreciated them so much because my daughter was very stressed and anxious. We are so grateful for their kind assistance."

"Mount Vernon High School's STEP Program (Secondary Transition to Employment Program) is filled with teachers who constantly go the extra mile to help special education students grow their independent living and job skills so they can become employable and be successful in their future. These teachers have come in early, stayed late, attended events outside school hours/days, and built relationships with these students and their families. They work tirelessly to ensure each STEP student has a meaningful job internship throughout the year that they can enjoy, grow in, and build their resume. They are on call 24/7 with these students and work behind the scenes as well doing things like community-based instruction, travel training for public transportation, and financial literacy with them. Further, they have to build and maintain working relationships with business in the area to ensure each student in the program has adequate jobsite exposure in various trades such as hospitality, restaurant, schools, medical, and so much more. This program at MVHS is a vital part of making special education students successful and productive members of society as they transition from high school students to adults. Ms. Sklar stepped in and generously used a 'Gold Card' to ensure he didn't leave empty-handed. This gesture meant the world to my son; he felt truly cared for and supported by his teacher. Ms. Sklar turned a moment of potential disappointment into a wonderful, real-life example of compassion. "Kim Robinson is the teacher every child deserves. She is kind, fun, creative, caring, dedicated, loving, and enthusiastic for all things kindergarten. Every day, she works hard to do as much as she possibly can for her students. Throughout the day, she checks to ensure that they have everything that they need. She also constantly keeps high expectations for her students and herself. Although she is a relatively new teacher, she draws upon years of experience working with children to meet each student's individual needs. Kim always has a warm smile and a kind word for everyone who works with her. She goes out of her way every day to bring a small toy to the playground for a student who isn't even in her class, so that the student can fidget with it. These little treasures light up his face whenever he finds them. He always makes it his mission to seek Kim out to share what he has discovered. The relationship that she has been able to build with the student is so sweet and inspiring to see. As a coworker, she cares so deeply for her fellow teachers and continuously checks on us to make sure we are okay. Kim holds herself to high standards and works each day tirelessly to prepare for her students. She challenges herself to try new things and get out of her comfort zone in everything she does. We are so grateful to have Kim on the team and know that any child is lucky to work with her every day!"

"Ms. Khan at Woodburn Elementary is an absolute gem—the kind you hope your child gets at least once in their school career. She teaches AAP math for my 6th grader and somehow manages to be equal parts math wizard, student advocate, and genuinely lovely human. Ms. Khan took the time (extra time!) to reach out to me after noticing something important: my child had way more potential than their test scores were showing. She had already assessed—like a true math detective—that the issue wasn’t understanding, but speed. My child was rushing, not checking work, and making mistakes despite clearly knowing the logic and how to arrive at the correct answers. In other words: the brain was there; the brakes were not. She shared a few strategies she wanted to try and asked if I agreed. Not only did I agree—I was honestly gob smacked that she cared enough to take these extra steps. That level of attentiveness and kindness doesn’t go unnoticed, especially by my child, who now comes home offering unsolicited compliments about how much they like Ms. Khan (a rare and treasured event). My child, who already loves math, was fully on board with the plan. And wouldn’t you know it—the strategies worked. Once my child slowed down and checked their work, the next score was significantly higher than the rushed one. Proof positive that Ms. Khan knew exactly what she was seeing all along. She also suggested that the entire class switch to binders for math since the original folders were no match for the ever-growing collection of papers. This simple change made organization easier for everyone and was a perfect example of an inclusive, Tier 1 support where all students benefited—no one singled out, everyone set up for success. The introduction of homework (a gentle “preview” of 7th grade life) has also been fascinating to watch. My child now announces, unprompted, that she needs to do her homework—and then actually does it independently. I am impressed. Slightly stunned. But impressed. Ms. Khan led every conversation by highlighting my child’s strengths and positives first, which is always a gift to hear as a parent. She is kind, thoughtful, and clearly invested in helping her students be their best selves—not just better test-takers. We are incredibly grateful to have her. Truly."

"I had the pleasure of judging at the Washington Area Speech and Debate League competition on December 13, hosted by Robinson Secondary School coaches Alison Wolfe and Jeff Koegler. The coaches managed a seemingly large student volunteer crew. As a first-time judge, any logistical concerns were allayed by the wonderful students and staff of Robinson. Everything was clearly marked, students were extremely helpful and polite, and they problem-solved (walkie talkie!) when they couldn't figure something out. I was also incredibly impressed with the openness and availability of WASDL President, Mark Deaton. He must have fielded innumerable questions, and he took them all, large and small. Overall, these staff and students made an event with dozens of moving parts move along seamlessly, creating a memorable event for over 800 guests! They certainly deserve some kudos."

"Rosa Cruz helped FCYBL set up the needed scorer’s table and chairs for players and coaches. Unfortunately, our request to athletic office to have this setup was not relayed to Rosa and her staff. When Rosa learned about our club’s need for chairs for players and coaches, she directed her custodian to provide us what we needed. This did not happen the previous week and all FCYBL games and Westfield HS ran thirty minutes late. Rosa's quick cooperation allowed our games to start on time without negatively impacting the FCYBL and the Fairfax County residents attending the game. Thanks, Rosa!"

Recently, I ran into a particularly difficult request. Haile sat with me for several hours figuring out the logic required and then assisted me with the coding logic to make the report provide the data we needed. There is something to be said about someone who is able to work 'with' you and to continue being kind and patient. I recently spent two days in the cafeteria space collecting Impact Aid forms, and from the moment I arrived, the entire team made me feel welcomed and supported. Nghia in particular engaged with me daily and made me feel special. Although I was only there for a short time, the whole team treated me like family. Every day, they greeted me with smiles, kindness, and genuine attentiveness. They ensured I had everything I needed to do my work comfortably and efficiently. Their positive energy made the experience not only easy, but truly enjoyable. In addition to their outstanding service, the food was wonderful prepared with the same level of pride and care that they show in all their interactions. The cafeteria team embody the spirit of FCPS through their professionalism, warmth, and commitment to creating a welcoming environment for everyone. Nicole responded promptly and thoughtfully, working closely with her team to obtain a piece of seatbelt/vest material appropriate for use as a tactile cue. She went above and beyond by coordinating the delivery of the material directly to the student’s school to ensure timely implementation. Nicole’s responsiveness, problem-solving, and genuine commitment to supporting students with diverse needs exemplify exemplary collaborative practice. "I would like to express my appreciation for Patrick Kuesters and the exceptional support he has provided us over the last few years. Although he is an NES Network Engineer, Patrick consistently goes above and beyond his role to assist the Windows Server Team, the Linux/Unix Team, and anyone else, including 3rd party Contractors working on our special projects, when they need help. He always contacts us after completing work at a site to confirm that our servers are up and that everything is visible on our end. When he’s on-site, or even near a site, he routinely offers to check on things for us, saving unnecessary trips and greatly improving our efficiency. With 240 sites for us to cover every day, his willingness to be an extra set of hands and eyes is invaluable. Patrick frequently goes the extra mile. He often stays onsite after finishing his own work so other teams can verify their systems. Also, when he notices a disconnected cable on any of our hardware, he offers to reconnect it himself, even replacing it with his own cables if needed. His dedication, initiative, and collaborative spirit make a significant positive impact on our operations. I greatly appreciate his efforts and wanted to ensure they are recognized."

When my husband and I sat down with Linda for our meeting, we were immediately grateful for her preparedness, her calm approach, and her collaborative mindset. She outlined her understanding of our challenges, and took a great deal of time to listen and thoughtfully respond as I shared our concerns. We both left the meeting feeling reassured and much more confident about our plan moving forward. She has remained actively involved in our daughter's plan, and has been clear with the whole team about the priority being helping our daughter succeed. Thanks to Ms. Boyle’s commitment, students experience five school-based activities throughout the year as well as three experiential learning field trips that broaden their perspectives and strengthen their sense of belonging. Through engaging lessons that blend teamwork, sportsmanship, and movement, Mr. Wilcox helps students develop healthy habits and a love for being active that extend far beyond the gym. Recently, his training and leadership with the Safety Patrols truly shined. Four of his patrols, showed incredible responsibility one morning when they remembered not to open the walker door without an adult present, even when others asked them to. Their decision helped keep our school safe and demonstrated the integrity and leadership Mr. Wilcox instills in his students. Beyond his work in the gym, Mr. Wilcox is a supportive colleague and active contributor to the Haycock community. He mentors students, assists with Safety Patrols, and even helps with the school newspaper. His positivity, kindness, and genuine care for others uplift everyone around him. "There is a quote from Maya Angelou that I often think of when I interact with Jennifer Blum. "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel". Jennifer Blum can best be described by the way she makes you feel after interacting with her. She is often the first of many colleagues I go to when I need an encouraging word or just time to process a challenging situation. She allows those she works with to be themselves and feel competent in the decisions that they will make. She has this same effect on students which is why she has the important role of Behavior Resource Teacher at our school. Going above and beyond when a child needs time and additional understanding as they are experiencing an emotional crisis or need coaching to figure out the next best thing to do. Erin immediately asked all the questions a supervisor would ask in order to assess the situation and offered to help as soon as she completed her trip. She kept an open line of communication with the broken down driver, assisted with getting the students to their stops, and got the driver to her car. What could have been a very stressful situation was calmly and professionally handled."

"I would like to share some extremely positive feedback regarding Amon Heard. Amon was the bus driver assigned to the McLean High School Wrestling Team this past Saturday during our trip to the NOVA Classic at Fairfax High School. This was the best transportation experience our program has ever had. The driver was exceptionally professional and clearly took great pride in his work. He communicated with our staff and athletes clearly, calmly, and pleasantly. He arrived on time, fully prepared, and began the day with a thorough and thoughtful safety briefing for our wrestlers, which we truly appreciated. His driving was safe, efficient, and confident. Even more impressive was the passion he showed for his job. His enthusiasm and dedication were remarkable, and they made a noticeable impact on our team’s overall experience. If the county has any formal way to recognize outstanding employee performance, I would be eager to nominate this driver. His professionalism and commitment reflected exceptionally well on FCPS, and we are sincerely grateful for the level of service he provided. "Libya Doman has committed many hours, logistical prowess, and significant attention to detail to organizing a phenomenal professional development experience for art teachers. There are many across FCPS who plan and present PD regularly, but Libya engaged in the detailed and time consuming process of scheduling classroom visits across multiple schools, on multiple dates to arrange "Conversational Rounds" for dozens of FCPS Art Teachers. This involved careful consideration of and communication with host teachers, and detail-oriented focus to arrange and confirm schedules that allowed for meaningful observation, opportunities for participants to discuss and debrief, and time to move between locations. She even organized a process for having all participants help to thank the hosts for their hospitality. This was a demanding process that Libya embraced to make sure participating teachers had an outstanding experience."

He is so welcoming to the kids and to us in the morning at the bus stop, and so friendly and good humored and patient with us parents. He does a phenomenal job of managing rowdy kids on the bus. I emailed Ms. Petruzzellis and explained the situation to her -- she went and spoke with the substitute teacher and my daughter was able to go to the book fair today. She came home SO HAPPY and EXCITED and shared with us all of the books that she bought. Thank you for taking the time to make this happen during your busiest time of the year. "Cathy Hampton is an admin assistant in the Area 4 Transportation Office who made a very real difference for a student that had a tangible impact on his ability to access education. Our admin team is currently working with a student who is facing numerous challenges, both personally and academically that have impacted his mental health, outlook toward school, and disrupted the lives of his immediate family members. His mother is a single parent who is doing everything she can to help her child but is becoming discouraged because of roadblocks they've faced over the past few years. Today, Cathy took the time to listen when I called, responded immediately, and follow through with what she told me she would do to help. Thanks to Cathy's work, the student is able to begin immediately accessing transportation, which removed a major barrier in his ability to attend school. Cathy's work not only supports our Strategic Plan Goal 4 by ensuring this student has equitable access to school and necessary supports, but her work directly impacts our school's ability to decrease chronic absenteeism for this student and supports Pillar B by helping to foster trust and partnership with the student's family. The evening before our meeting, the space had been used to provide community vaccination access, which meant the entire room needed to be completely rearranged. Without being asked, he stayed late to reset the space so our team could begin the morning focused on our work rather than on room logistics. When the team arrived early that morning, prepared to reset the room, we were genuinely surprised and grateful to find that he had already taken care of everything. He created a warm and welcoming space for our staff, and his thoughtful preparation supported a collaborative environment where we could do our best work. "Mrs. Maria Martin, Falls Church HS Dean of Students & court/school liaison, has been helping students and families to overcome barriers to school attendance for several years now. There is a student who has had attendance issues for two years in a row and Mrs. Martin never gave up on her. She kept a close eye on this student's attendance and kept on meeting with her on numerous occasions, counseling and encouraging her to improve her attendance. Mrs. Martin's persistence and caring mannerism finally paid off in the second school year. This student began attending school regularly, come after school for attendance recover to get tutoring support in her classes. She even helped other students with their work. Seeing that this student has done a complete turnaround, Mrs. Martin recognized her by nominated her for being student of the month. Mrs. Martin has demonstrated the patience, persistence, and caring/never give up on students’ attitude, helping students to reach their potential, one student at a time.
