FCPS CARES of the Month Recipients

Central Office

Dave Martinez, Merrifield Support Center

"I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the outstanding service provided by Dave Martinez who responded to an emergency at the Gatehouse Administration Building on 2/4/2026 At the end of the day a frozen pipe burst, threatening the building’s ability to operate the following day. Despite the late hours and challenging conditions, he worked diligently throughout the night to diagnose the issue and fully clear the obstruction. His persistence, skill, and commitment ensured that the plumbing system was restored, and the building was fully operational by the next morning. Thanks to his dedication and professionalism, significant disruption was avoided, and staff were able to return to a fully functioning facility without delay. His willingness to go above and beyond, especially under difficult circumstances, did not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated. Please extend our thanks to him for a job exceptionally well done. His hard work and reliability made a real difference, and we are grateful for his efforts."

Carlos D'Alvano & Cynthia Stowers, South Lakes HS

two south county high school staff members with flowers and certificates at an informal fcps cares recognition event held in the south lakes high school auditorium

"I would like to recognize Chef Carlos D’Alvano and Chef Cynthia Stowers, two exceptional educators whom I appreciate both as a colleague and as a parent of a South Lakes student. When I began working at South Lakes ten years ago, I was told one of the best perks of our school was the Culinary Arts program. It did not take long for me to see why. Beyond the convenience of not packing lunch and being continually impressed by the incredible meals our students prepare, what truly stands out is the professional environment these teachers cultivate. Students are not just learning how to cook — they are developing leadership, communication, customer service, attention to detail, and the ability to perform under pressure. These are lifelong, transferable skills that will serve them well in any career path. When my son was in 8th grade, I “dragged” him to the curriculum fair to explore elective options. Culinary Arts was not initially on his radar — until a smiling student handed him a chocolate truffle. He was quickly won over by Chef D’Alvano’ s positivity and enthusiasm and decided to enroll in Intro to Culinary. Throughout that year, he genuinely loved the class. As a bonus, I occasionally benefited from the samples he brought me (staff don’t usually get Intro to Culinary food). Chef D’Alvano consistently encouraged him and helped build both his skills and his confidence. After that first year, my son was so committed to continuing in the program that he took PE over the summer to make room for Culinary 1 in his sophomore schedule. Under Chef Stowers’s guidance, he has continued to grow tremendously — not just in culinary technique, but in planning, teamwork, and problem-solving. He is still working on putting food and dishes away at home, but hopefully he will get there without me having to say, “Clean up like Chef standards!” Recently, while waiting outside the kitchen before a Valentine’s treat pickup (I was instructed to be first in line!), I could hear Chef Stowers joking with students as she prepared them for service. She models the perfect balance of maintaining high expectations while fostering a joyful, supportive classroom culture. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a strong Culinary Arts program at South Lakes. Chef D’Alvano and Chef Stowers are true gems who create meaningful learning experiences and help students thrive both in and beyond the kitchen."

Veronica Perez, Belvedere ES

the region 2 February 2026 fcps cares of the month recipient with a certificate and flower in front of a belvedere elementary school wall mural

"Veronica truly puts her heart into everything she does. She consistently goes above and beyond for students and colleagues, and while she never seeks recognition for herself, she is always quick to celebrate and uplift those around her. Since being introduced to GLAD strategies, Veronica has immersed herself in learning and implementing them in meaningful ways. She has spent countless hours creating materials to support classrooms with GLAD strategies so that English Language Learners can access academic vocabulary and grade-level content. What stands out most is that she offers these lessons to all classrooms in our grade level—even those she does not directly serve—because she believes every student deserves access to these opportunities. She sees the bigger picture and advocates for all learners. Veronica is constantly searching for new and better ways to support our ESOL students, especially emerging language learners. She dedicates time both in and out of school to create materials that allow students at varying language levels to feel successful and work toward independence. Recently, she recognized that two students needed additional scaffolding during whole-group Benchmark instruction. Although they can access content when working directly with her, she noticed they often felt lost when she was not present. In response, she independently created a supplemental booklet for the current unit to help them engage with and understand the material—rather than simply copying what others wrote. This thoughtful solution empowers students to build understanding and confidence on their own. Veronica is deeply collaborative. She listens carefully to classroom teachers, observes what is happening in classrooms, and adjusts or creates materials that best support both students and teachers. When she wants to try something new, she seeks teacher input and works as a true partner. She thoughtfully balances curriculum expectations, real classroom needs, and the emotional well-being of students, all while maintaining strong, positive relationships with her colleagues. Most importantly, Veronica holds students to high standards while celebrating their small wins along the way. She ensures that her students feel seen, supported, and capable. Her dedication, compassion, and tireless effort make a lasting impact on our school community.”

Chanel Favors, Bucknell ES (Pictured Above) - View the Celebration !

"I am proud to recognize Chanel Favors for her outstanding leadership in organizing and leading Bucknell Elementary School’s 2nd Annual Career Day. Chanel truly went above and beyond to create a meaningful and inspiring experience for our students from PreK through 6th grade. Through her vision, coordination, and dedication, students had the opportunity to learn from a wide range of professionals, including a lawyer, content creator, OBGYN, realtor, cosmetologist, psychologist, dentist, cybersecurity and AI security specialists, entrepreneurs, and many others. Each presenter shared not only information about their careers, but also powerful messages about perseverance, education, and believing in oneself. The level of organization and intentionality behind this event ensured that every grade level had access to engaging age-appropriate experiences that broadened their understanding of future possibilities. Career Day is more than a single event. It is an investment in our students’ future. By connecting students with real professionals, Chanel helped them see that their dreams are attainable and that their goals are within reach. Experiences like this build confidence, spark curiosity, and reinforce the importance of education in a tangible way. One teacher wrote, "I was really impressed with the diverse and interesting careers you found. I was more impressed with the logistics because even with the small hiccups, the day felt seamless and easy. You trouble shot in such a way that it did not leave another burden of stress on teachers. I feel like we have less time for the “soft” curriculum of education – things such as dreaming and planning for adulthood. I am so glad that you made and organized the time so we could have a powerful day about student futures." Chanel’s commitment to creating enriching opportunities for our students exemplifies what FCPS CARES is all about. Her leadership, care for our school community, and dedication to expanding opportunities for our Bulldogs make a lasting impact. Bucknell is better because of her efforts. Kudos Chanel!"

Karen Bernat, Centreville ES

"Karen Bernat is an unsung hero of her school and home community, both within Region 4, and both in Centreville VA. Mrs. Bernat has been a kind, gentle, calm and ever-present instructional assistant at Centreville elementary, assisting and supporting the upper grades and students who require a little extra to ensure their school day goes according to plan. She is an active band parent at every school her children have attended--and supports the CVHS marching band mending costumes, helping find reeds, and bringing pep and excitement to the stands. I know from members of the Centreville ES community what an asset she is there and how grateful the school is to have her. What some at Centreville ES may not know, is that every morning for as long as we have been neighbors, Mrs. Bernat also wakes up to her bustling home (abundant with love and chaos of 5 children and a husband) and escorts her own and the neighborhood of children to the bus stop each day. She ensures that kids cross safely, that there is a smiling safe and friendly face to get them off to school. When it is still dark out (most days for middle school) she is outside with flashlights so kids can see and feel safe. Most notably is when there is bad weather, or there is snow and ice (like this current time with snow-crete) Mrs. Bernat is an adult there to make sure everyone gets on the bus safely. Every child who steps on the bus gets a "have a good day!" and a friendly wave--which we know can go a long way for students who may have a hard start to their day or may not get that elsewhere know they can count on that every morning from her. She conducts traffic in the four way stop where multiple bus stops are for CVHS, Rocky Run and Liberty. She looks down our side streets and kindly asks the bus driver to wait just a few more seconds as sleepy eyed, and mop top heads of middle schoolers come bounding down the street to not miss the bus. Because of teachers, neighbors, and community members like Mrs. Bernat that we at FCPS can be proud of our district. She is the humblest of people, who I am sure reading this must be blushing and mouth agape likely with tears in her eyes--I see you Karen, and so do so many others. Thank you for what you do for your students at school, your own children at home, and our very blessed neighborhood in Centreville."

Mallorie Joyner, Lewis HS

three staff members with balloons at an fcps cares recognition event at Lewis High School

" I would like to submit an FCPS CARES recognition for Mallorie Joyner in appreciation of her outstanding work supporting her caseload, fulfilling her teaching responsibilities, and consistently demonstrating exceptional professionalism at Lewis High School. Ms. Joyner exemplifies dedication to students through her steadfast commitment to meeting their individual academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs, particularly those navigating complex or challenging circumstances. She approaches every situation with remarkable calmness, compassion, and professionalism, thoughtfully ensuring that all relevant stakeholders are included, informed, and supported throughout the process. Her commitment to family engagement is truly exemplary. Ms. Joyner maintains proactive, consistent communication with parents and guardians, keeping them well-informed about their child’s progress, behavioral development, and available supports. She makes a concerted effort to initiate communication early, often before concerns escalate, which helps families feel reassured, valued, and actively involved in their child’s educational journey. She also works diligently to connect students and staff with district-level resources when additional expertise or support is needed, facilitating observations, consultations, and collaborative planning that ultimately strengthen outcomes for students. Beyond her direct work with students and families, Ms. Joyner is an exceptional collaborator with colleagues. She regularly shares practical resources, evidence-based strategies, and thoughtful insights that help the broader team better support diverse learner needs. Her willingness to mentor newer staff members, contribute meaningfully during team discussions, and model best practices has positively influenced our collective capacity to serve students effectively. Whether developing individualized support plans that address both academic and social-emotional needs, attending meetings beyond contractual hours to advocate for students, or providing detailed documentation that supports continuity of services and smooth transitions, she consistently demonstrates a level of professionalism and care that sets a high standard. Ms. Joyner’s proactive mindset, attention to detail, and deeply student-centered approach make a meaningful difference in our school community every day. Her work creates a positive ripple effect that supports students, reassures families, and strengthens colleagues. Monique Martin, Stonecroft Transportation

"My children's elementary school route has been through quite a few changes this year, so the students have had to adjust, sometimes daily, to the different styles and expectations of each bus driver. I'm sure it has been challenging for the bus drivers and the children. Because my seventh grader and ninth grader regularly get my kindergartener and fourth grader off the bus, they are all very familiar with the kindergarten release policy. One day last week, Ms. Monique Martin drove their Navy Elementary route in the afternoon. My kindergartener later reported to me, "That bus driver really knew what she was doing," and my fourth grader confirmed, "Yeah, she did the kindergarten thing the right way." My older children said that the parents outside were even more organized. I asked them to tell me about the driver, and they talked about how she was welcoming and polite. She spoke to the students about the expectations for kindergarten at each bus stop before releasing them, and made sure they were approaching the steps safely at the front of the bus. She also made expectations clear for those picking up their children. Many different bus drivers have taken my four kids to-and-from this year, but Ms. Martin left a real impression on them. I hope she knows how much she is appreciated for her extra kindness and care toward all of our children every day."

Cindy Shepard, Alan Leis Center

"I have the privilege of working closely, alongside Cindy, our Disabilities Resource Teacher. Each and every day, Cindy gives her all to students, families, and colleagues. She is masterful at building adult capacity to support our youngest learners with diverse needs, ensuring that everyone feels equipped and supported. Cindy brings a sense of calm, compassion, and expertise that makes even the most complex challenges feel manageable. Her intentionality and attention to detail consistently lead to meaningful, supportive outcomes for children and the adults who care for them. Most recently Cindy thoughtfully collaborated with a family and teaching team to create a personalized social story to support a student before, during, and after a hospitalization. She checked in with caregivers multiple times throughout the process and carefully supported the student’s transition back into the classroom by helping implement thoughtful modifications that ensured success. Today, Cindy led a classroom lesson connected to the current unit of study on community helpers while also intentionally supporting this same student. Students learned about how casts help bones heal and grow strong. They had the opportunity to apply “casts” to baby dolls and even create finger casts for one another. This hands-on, engaging experience not only reinforced academic learning but also nurtured empathy, understanding, and emotional growth. Cindy’s work strengthens both minds and hearts. Our students, families, and staff are better because of her dedication."

Cameron Lyons, Hayfield Secondary

"Cameron has joined the Hayfield High School CAT B team with her full heart. Since the beginning of the year, she's been creating opportunities for students to gain vocational experience, grow their social skills, and build confidence. She is helping to foster a sense of independence in all of her students by finding opportunities through job sites and in-class skill-building. Cameron presumes competence in all of her students and does not give up if she comes up against a challenge. She's able to pivot and create new opportunities for students and advocates fiercely on their behalf. Our students are now going on field trips to explore post-graduate options, working in multiple community job sites, finding meaningful work within our building, growing their vocational skills in class through intentional instruction, and becoming more visible around our building. She does it all with the best of intentions, a growth mindset, and an open heart. We are so lucky Cameron has joined the Hawk Family and cannot wait to see how she continues to soar!"

Katie Denisar, West Springfield ES

"Ms. Denisar has been such a bright light in our daughter's first grade year at West Springfield. Her personality is so caring and kind and immediately puts kids at ease. I've attended several after-hours school events, it's clear that the kids in her class absolutely adore her by the way they run up to hug her. I've also served as a parent chaperone / volunteer for two events this year, and Ms. Denisar always exudes an effortless balance of structure and warmth. At one point during a field trip, a child got stung by a bee and was upset. Ms. Denisar sat with the child while he cried, her arm around him, until he felt better. She sends the kids home with packets of books, ensuring that every child has access to the magic of reading at home. At the fun run, she hyped the kids up with positive encouragement and created a fun, convivial atmosphere. This is Ms. Denisar' s first year at West Springfield, having moved with her family from another state. She is a seamless and wonderful addition to our school community. We are so lucky to be with Ms. Denisar this year! Thank you so much for the joy you have brought to our daughter and her classmates!"

Veronica Lowe, Stonecroft Transportation

"Whether it’s a quick question, a last-minute odd request, or playing detective to help us track down a bus, Veronica is on it every single time. I’m so thankful for her responsiveness, positivity, and the humor she brings to every conversation. Veronica, thank you for always answering the call (literally!) and keeping everything rolling smoothly. We appreciate you more than you know!"

Ellen Kennedy, Gatehouse Admin Center

"Ms. Kennedy is critical to the work of the Office of Employee Relations. She provides comprehensive legal oversight on all employment matters managed within our office, ensuring that decisions are thoughtful, compliant, and aligned with federal and state law. Her guidance is not simply advisory—it is foundational to the integrity of our processes and the protection of student and employee rights. Ellen works in an exceptionally collaborative manner. She is routinely relied upon not only by our office, but also by program managers and senior leaders across the division who contact us regarding complex matters with potential implications for student rights, employee rights, and division liability. In many instances, these matters are time-sensitive and require immediate, yet carefully measured, legal analysis before any employment action can occur. Ellen is consistently available—often at a moment’s notice—to provide clear, practical, and well-reasoned counsel. Her wealth of knowledge, including her prior experience with Arlington County Public Schools and her eight years of dedicated service to Fairfax County Public Schools, has proven invaluable. She brings both institutional insight and strategic foresight to every consultation. Her work includes consult and review of all equal opportunity matters, as well as oversight of performance management cases and misconduct investigations that may result in employment actions, grievances, hearings, petitions to the Superintendent, presentations to the Fairfax County School Board, or matters involving the Virginia Department of Education. Ellen’s expertise preserves the integrity of the division’s employment oversight processes. She ensures compliance with complex and evolving legal standards while helping leadership navigate difficult personnel decisions with fairness and consistency. Without her steady guidance and advisement, there is little doubt that certain matters could have been compounded—resulting in unnecessary liability, expenditure of time, and financial cost to the system. Beyond her legal acumen, Ellen exemplifies the spirit of CARES through her professionalism, responsiveness, and commitment to doing what is right for students, employees, and the division as a whole. The Office of Employee Relations is deeply appreciative of our partnership with Ms. Kennedy and the extraordinary value she brings to our work each day."

-Bill Fulton, Gatehouse Admin Center

Darlene Dorsey, Mason Crest ES

"Ms. Darlene Dorsey welcomes our children to school with genuine love and excitement every day, and today, she went above and beyond to make them feel extra special on their birthday. Even more extraordinary is that our children are in 4th grade, and she has never been an actual teacher of theirs, she has just made the effort to connect with them, when she sees them at drop off and in the hallways, as I've seen her do with many other students as well. She is always out welcoming all students with her bubble wand at drop off, she is always smiling and energetic, and she brings such joy to everyone (even when I'm feeling stressed, when I see her exude excitement and happiness for students, it instantly puts a smile on my face). As parents, it warms our hearts knowing our kids are so loved and cared for at school. Teachers like her are a huge part of what makes Mason Crest so amazing!"

-a Mason Crest ES parent

Allison Goodman, Lake Anne ES

"Ms. Goodman has had a tremendous impact on our son this year. While he has always loved Language Arts, he faced some challenges in previous years that Ms. Goodman helped him overcome with such skill that she truly reignited his passion for the subject. A highlight was the class play she organized; inviting parents to watch was a special touch that brought the learning to life. Beyond academics, Ms. Goodman has built a deep bond with our son, becoming his 'number one trusted adult' at Lake Anne. She truly embodies the life-changing impact a dedicated, positive teacher can have on a student."

-a Lake Anne ES parent

Kelly Galbraith, Willow Oaks Admin Center

She was incredibly responsive, providing high-quality feedback that supported both FCPS staff and students. Her positive, can-do attitude is infectious. She is an absolute asset to the FCPS family!"

-Aidan Vigil, Longfellow MS

Danielle Heffron, Daniels Run ES

"Danielle Heffron exemplifies dedication as a physical education teacher in Fairfax City Schools, consistently going above and beyond for her students and the broader school community. She individualizes instruction to meet diverse needs, thoughtfully adapting activities, equipment, and expectations so every child can experience success and growth in PE, regardless of starting skill level. Danielle carefully demonstrates each skill with clear, developmentally appropriate modeling, then scaffolds learning by breaking movements into manageable steps, using visual cues, verbal prompts, and guided practice to build student confidence and independence. She checks for understanding frequently and adjusts her instruction in real time, ensuring all students, including those who need additional support, feel included, safe, and capable in her gym. Beyond her direct work with students, Danielle goes above and beyond for Fairfax City Schools and the local community by supporting schoolwide wellness initiatives, volunteering for family fitness or community events, and collaborating with colleagues to promote a culture of health and physical literacy across the division. Her leadership, positive energy, and student-centered mindset make her an invaluable asset to Fairfax City Schools and a strong advocate for the physical, social, and emotional well-being of every child she serves."

"We would like to sincerely praise Dr. Linovitz, our son's 5th grade teacher at Cub Run Elementary. She is incredibly patient and truly understands how to support him and implement his 504 plan in a thoughtful and effective way. Peter Wolf, Willow Springs ES

"We would like to recognize our new assistant principal, Mr. Peter Wolf, for the immediate and meaningful impact he is making at Willow Springs Elementary School. From the moment he joined our community, he has focused on building genuine connections—not only with students, but with staff as well. He brings a refreshing sense of humor to even the heaviest situations, helping to ease tension while still leading with professionalism and respect. Mr. Wolf consistently thinks outside the box, especially when it comes to using data to guide decisions. His deep understanding of data analysis has led to the creation of user-friendly, manageable tools that truly support teachers in their daily work. He makes himself available to staff, always carving out time to listen, problem-solve, and provides meaningful support. What makes his leadership even more impactful is the way he and our principal work in true lockstep. They complement one another exceptionally well—balancing vision, practicality, and heart—creating a unified and steady leadership presence throughout the building. It is clear that Mr. Wolf leads with integrity, earns respect naturally, and treats every person he encounters with dignity. He is exactly the kind of leader Willow Spring’s needs, and we are incredibly fortunate to have him as part of our school community."

Billy Watts, South Lakes HS

"Billy Watts, our school test coordinator, demonstrated exceptional professionalism and dedication in ensuring the successful administration of the WIDA Consortium ACCESS testing for our ESOL students. Despite numerous challenges — including multiple snow days and schedule delays, student absences, and the need to thoughtfully accommodate students who were fasting — he consistently went above and beyond to meet the needs of every multilingual learner. Mr. Watts worked collaboratively with the ESOL team, actively seeking input from teachers to create flexible and effective testing schedules. He also arranged individual testing sessions when necessary to ensure students could participate at the most appropriate and convenient times. Coordinating testing for nearly 300 students across four language domains under these circumstances was no small task, yet he managed it efficiently, always maintaining a positive attitude and welcoming smile. The ESOL team would like to express our sincere appreciation for his hard work, responsiveness, and unwavering commitment to supporting our multilingual learners’ success."

-South Lakes HS ESOL Team

Kelsey Lanza, Fairfax Villa ES

"Ms. Lanza exemplifies what FCPS Cares is all about. She works tirelessly to ensure all of her students have what they need to be successful at school. She even stepped up to support a teammate’s classroom when that teammate had to leave early in the year. She took on planning for, supporting and helping the other class as well as the long-term substitute. She works hard to ensure that parents receive timely communication about what is happening at school. She also ensures that her students know just how much she cares about them! Ms. Lanza is an amazing educator, and both of my kids have been so fortunate to have had her as their teacher!"

- Mina Tawdoroys, Dogwood ES

Chelsea Ettere, Brenda Yanes, Chelsea Andrade, Brooke Allport, Laura Kirchgraber & Haley North, Woodburn ES

"I wanted to take a moment to submit an FCPS Cares to the 2nd grade team and EMRT at Woodburn Elementary School. Recently, they were asked to do an observation for an Amplify lesson. A few specific highlights from the visit was that it was clear to everyone that they are operating as a unified front. Their shared goals and consistent instructional language were evident in the lesson we observed and the transition to Amplify is no small feat, but seeing it live in your classrooms was impressive. The teams had a deep understanding of the curriculum's rigor. The team was even able to pivot and rearrange an entire unit so that we could see Amplify in action. That kind of flexibility is rare, and it ensured that we saw what we needed to see. I also know how much "behind-the-scenes" energy it takes to prep for these visits, and a huge thank you to Chelsea for your work in supporting 2nd grade. Your leadership and guidance do not go unnoticed.

-Jessica Nelson, Woodburn ES

Joseph Green, Coates ES

"At Lutie Lewis Coates Elementary School, Mr. Green exemplifies what it means to build meaningful connections with students. A wonderful 6th grade teacher and role model, he goes above and beyond to connect with students outside of his grade level. Currently, he mentors three students, two first graders and one fourth grader—who connected with him simply from passing interactions in the hallway. His impact on these students has been so meaningful that they now request and look forward to seeing Mr. Green each week. His warmth and compassion for connecting with students truly model the collective support we strive to provide for every child at Coates. 💙⭐ "

Lillian Olsen, Terra Centre ES

"I would like to take a moment to recognize my child’s wonderful teacher for the incredible dedication and care she shows to her students each and every day. The hard work she puts into teaching is truly evident — my child comes home excited about school and loves sharing all the new things she has learned. It means so much to see that kind of enthusiasm and joy for learning. In fact, she even dislikes early release days because she misses being at school so much! That kind of excitement speaks volumes about the positive, engaging, and supportive classroom environment this teacher creates. We are so grateful for her commitment to our children and the lasting impact she is making."

- Nisha Hecht, Haycock ES

Katherine Verdaguer, Forest Edge ES

"It is difficult to put into words how grateful we are that Ms. Verdaguer is our child’s kindergarten teacher. With this being the first year our child is in elementary school, we could not have asked for a more thoughtful and caring teacher for our child to experience the beginning of their educational career. She has far exceeded our expectations in every regard, but most importantly, our child loves going to school, is proud of what they’ve learned each day, and is excited to show us what they are learning."

-a Forest Edge ES parent

Jason Henry, Colvin Run ES

"Mr. Henry goes above and beyond to make sure every student feels seen and heard. He has such a lasting impression that I often hear my middle school students talking about how much they loved Mr. Henry back in 5th grade. This year, I'm grateful that my son has Mr. Henry as one of his teachers and as a strong role model. His confidence and engagement for learning has increased thanks to Mr. Henry. Thanks for making every student feel special!"

Sarina Harlow, Falls Church HS

"This is Sarina’s third year in teaching Physical Education at Falls Church High School. As a colleague, I am amazed at how she is able to build relationships with her students and how the students see her with love and care. Sarina exemplifies all the qualities of what an exemplary teacher should stand for. She shows compassion, leadership, enthusiasm, and knowledge for her students. She is a role model for me, her colleagues, and her students. Sarina cares about her student’s education! She has learned to adapt to the students and learn how to motivate them. Teaching ESOL students was a challenge but she would spend late nights coming up with lessons that would be in Spanish and English so her students would learn together. She has students that run up to her every day and say they miss her and wish they had her as their teacher this school year. This last Valentine’s Day was really special for Sarina. A former student and a current student in her advisory came up to her and gave her flowers and a card. What was said in the card was so special and CARING! Here is how the card read: “Thank you for creating a safe space for me when going to advisory becomes a struggle. Supporting me during cheer fundraisers and overall teaching me what I got to build off of this year. I was truly blessed to have you as my teacher last year. I hope your classes truly realize how lucky they are to have you as their teacher! You truly flipped my freshman year for the best! Happy Valentine’s Day!” I commute with Sarina every day from Warrenton, Va. The ride home is filled with positive student experiences and before I know it, we are home. The enthusiasm that Sarina has with her teaching has inspired me as a 30-year veteran of teaching. As her father, I am so proud of her! She has given me the motivation that I remember I had when I was a new teacher. Sarina is an INSPIRATION to all and truly CARES about her students!"

Skyler Arrington, Mount Eagle ES

"In the almost two years I have known Skyler, she has been a thoughtful coach, coworker, and friend. She is a collaborator in every capacity helping support my thinking and others through thoughtful conversations and dialogues. Skyler has taken on the leadership role for MTSS and supported our community as a math and reading resource teacher over her tenure. This year, she committed to professional learning and development for ECRI and helped support the first-grade team through this new curriculum. Our first graders have shown significant growth in oral reading fluency through her continued support of this program. In addition, she has taken the lead for our High Impact Tutoring program, supporting, hiring, and training our Tutors for reading and math. This is also an ongoing commitment that requires collecting data and monitoring progress, as well as organizing and modifying schedules and communicating with staff throughout intervention cycles. Finally, Skyler is a jack of all trades, and her commitment and flexibility is manifest as she is willing to support any teacher or staff member. Since I have been here, she has supported multiple classrooms and temporarily transitioned into the primary teacher when that teacher was out on maternity leave earlier this year. Her willingness to jump in and support teachers and take on a variety of roles makes her a valuable asset to our community and best of the nest!"

Mirta Lizarazu & James McGeehan , Lorton Center

"Bus driver James McGeehan and attendant Mirta Lizarazu responded immediately when they heard the call for assistance in transporting three Kings Park students home last Thursday afternoon. They understood the importance of providing not only timely transportation, but also a calm and reassuring environment for the students. The bus was warm and clean, and the students were welcomed with genuine smiles and compassion. James’s professionalism in communicating with school administration and the transportation office ensured student safety remained the top priority while exemplifying radical hospitality. Although this assignment required them to go above and beyond their normal routes, James and Mirth made the students feel comfortable, valued, and right where they belonged. We are deeply grateful for their flexibility, dedication, and unwavering commitment to all students’ well-being. They are welcome at Kings Park anytime!"

-Jennifer Burke, Kings Park ES

Wendy Bowen, Herndon ES

"Ms. Bowen consistently goes above and beyond to make every student feel loved, valued, and special. I’ve seen firsthand how deeply she prioritizes relationships and truly invests in her students. No matter how busy her day gets, she never misses a promised lunch bunch or group time. We share the same duty post (she holds it down in the mornings, and I take the afternoons), and every single day, students ask about her at dismissal. Two in particular light up when they talk about her. Their daily goodbye to me almost always comes in the form of one question: “Where is Ms. Bowen?” Fridays are especially special. They eagerly wait with me until Ms. Bowen arrives with her prize box. Last week, when she was missing, one of the students was visibly upset. I reassured her that Ms. Bowen was likely busy at dismissal today and that she would receive her prize on Monday. Even so, I texted Ms. Bowen letting her know both students were looking for her — and without hesitation, she walked straight to SACC to deliver the prize herself. That’s the kind of heart she has. It’s educators like Ms. Bowen who keep our school running and brighten our days. Thank you for being an incredible colleague and mentor to our students. You are appreciated!"

Michele Sullivan, Mantua ES

"Michele Sullivan, a teacher at Mantua ES, lives close to Marshall Road ES, on 2/23/26 during our snow day, she took the time to reach out about a downed powerline that would have impacted traffic flow for arrival on 2/24. This supportive outreach helped the MRES prepare for and communicate with our FCPS team to ensure we had safety and logistics plans in place. She continued her support by following up in the afternoon to let us know repairs had been completed. Thanks, Michele, for being a stellar member of your community and FCPS!"

"Dranesville Elementary is so fortunate to have Matt Libby for the extraordinary impact he makes every single day. Mr. Libby is a true role model for both students and colleagues, consistently demonstrating integrity, dedication, and heart in all that he does. His positive influence extends far beyond the classroom, inspiring students to strive for excellence while feeling seen, valued, and supported. One of the many ways Mr. Libby creates memorable opportunities for his students is by taking them to sing the national anthem at George Mason University. Experiences like these not only showcase students’ talents, but also build confidence, pride, and a strong sense of community. Through these moments, Matt helps students see the power of their voices—both literally and figuratively. Mr. Libby’s commitment to his students is evident in the relationships he builds with families. He takes the time to call parents, share successes, and collaborate to ensure each child is supported. -Hannah Ryan, Fort Hunt ES

Nicole Gray, Fort Hunt ES

"Ms. Gray is a gifted natural educator & leader. Her influence has played a critical role in the musical and cognitive development of our daughter. Prior to Ms. Gray’s involvement, she showed little interest in musical achievement and struggled with focus. That has all changed and I believe much of the credit goes to the influence and confidence that Ms. Gray has instilled in our daughter. She now plays piano, violin, and guitar and practices on her own accord. I believe that this newfound diligence and motivation has helped our daughter in all aspects of her education, as she now also picks out books to read on her own and has stated that she wants to practice reading in order to improve “just like she does with her instruments”. Ms. Gray has instilled a focus and desire to achieve in our daughter at a critical time in her development that I believe will continue to pay dividends for the rest of her life.  We are extremely grateful to her and to Fort Hunt ES."

-a Fort Hunt ES parent

Ann McMichael, Fort Hunt ES

"Sra. McMichael goes above and beyond to make her class entertaining to spark learning. She is determined to find the best way for each student to learn and is not scared to figure it out and get creative. McMichael likes to check in and talk about progress and suggests ways to further learning out of the classroom environment. She is awesome!"

Kimberley McPherson,

"Mrs. McPherson exhibits superior instructional skills on a daily basis with her students. Last year my son was in her 5th grade class, and he exceeded our expectations by doing great on his English SOL. My son's comprehension level increased as well , he is now a great reader and that is thanks to the hard work and dedication Mrs. McPherson exhibited throughout the school year to ensure that her students passed the SOL. Mrs. McPherson is loved by her students , I have seen first-hand , the love , respect and appreciation the students from last year have shown to her . The class pet was a huge success in teaching the students responsibility, compassion and self-discipline."

Carla Tricoli-Rodriguez, Fort Hunt ES

"I truly appreciate the amount of time Sra. Tricoli takes to ensure all parents have the tools needed to help their students excel and succeed in her class. She sends detailed information on the assignments via email and ways we parents can stay involved with their learning techniques. It allows us to stay on the same page as the teacher and helps us to further participate in our children's education. I was having issues logging into JiJi and she allowed me to come into the classroom and walk me through the site so I could gain access at how. She is an amazing instructor."

-a Fort Hunt ES parent

Adriana Krogh, Fort Hunt ES

"Adriana has made an extraordinary transition from being an engaging and immersive Spanish language teacher to stepping into the very different, yet equally demanding, role of a self-contained special education teacher. What is most impressive is how seamlessly she has adapted, bringing with her a deep sense of care, patience, and dedication that has allowed her to thrive in this new setting. Her natural nurturing instincts have truly found their home in special education, where she has created a classroom environment built on structure, consistency, and compassion. Adriana has transformed her classroom into a place where routines provide security, expectations are clear, and every student feels both challenged and supported. She has demonstrated remarkable leadership by rewriting student goals and classroom expectations into attainable and meaningful achievements, giving her students a true sense of success and progress. Under her guidance, the classroom has flourished—not only academically, but also in fostering independence, confidence, and social-emotional growth. Adriana’s ability to balance high standards with empathy is nothing short of inspiring. She has proven that with the right teacher, every child can shine. Her colleagues, students, and families alike recognize her impact, and it is clear that she has found the perfect setting to use her gifts as an educator. Adriana is not just an outstanding teacher, she is a transformative one."

-Amaya Apellaniz, Fort Hunt ES

Linda Taylor, Fort Hunt ES

"Ms. Linda Taylor has been an absolute blessing for Fort Hunt Elementary School and especially for our family. Her ability to fuel the academic and social growth of her students is incredible, especially with all of the challenges inherent with kindergarten students. She fosters connections with each individual child, helping them to feel uniquely seen, and encourages them to embody their best qualities at all time. Our youngest daughter is very smart, but incredibly shy and somewhat socially immature. Ms. Taylor recognized this at once and incrementally found opportunities for her to speak in front of groups of students and the class. Over time, she built so much self-confidence that she began to assert herself in non-school environments which would have been unheard of just months earlier. That foundation allows her students, which have included two of our children, to acclimate to the structure of elementary school more easily and begin to focus on a love of learning. Intellectually, Ms. Taylor not only ensures that children have the baseline competencies in language arts and math, but she is not afraid to challenge them with higher level work so they can begin to stretch the limits of their comprehension. This is a terrific entry-level approach for children as they hopefully evolve into lifelong learners. Doing all of this while also beginning to introduce non-native speakers into a Spanish immersion-style classroom approach is mind-boggling. My son, who had never spoken a word of Spanish before entering kindergarten, was encouraged to try out words, phrases and sentences. He took to it at once, and Ms. Taylor would challenge him with newer and more advanced vocabulary every day. Now, he sings songs in Spanish, reads books in Spanish, and tries to engage Spanish speakers outside of school whenever given the chance. Most incredibly of all, though, Ms. Taylor does it all with the purest of smiles and joy."

-a Fort Hunt ES parent

Linda Taylor, Fort Hunt ES

"Linda Taylor exemplifies everything an outstanding educator should be. Kindergarten is a major transition for children, yet she has created a classroom that radiates warmth, safety, and joy, helping students like my son truly love coming to school. Her deep understanding of each child’s individual needs is remarkable—when I shared that my son was being bullied for his stutter, she immediately and compassionately addressed it, ensuring her classroom remains a place of respect and trust. Mrs. Taylor is also incredibly collaborative and communicative with parents, keeping us engaged and informed so we can best support learning at home. Beyond her nurturing approach, she makes learning exciting and effective—just two months into the year, our son is sounding out big words, spelling on his own, and even speaking Spanish confidently at home with counting forward and backward and sharing new phrases with pride. Her ability to make learning both fun and meaningful demonstrates exceptional skill in fostering achievement, confidence, and inclusion. Mrs. Taylor doesn’t just teach—she transforms the classroom into a space where every student feels seen, valued, and inspired to learn. We feel incredibly fortunate that our son’s first school experience is with Mrs. Taylor, and Fort Hunt is equally lucky to have her."

"Mr. Rafael Gomez consistently goes above and beyond in ways both big and small that make a meaningful difference at Haycock. "Molly transitioned into the Science 8 Department at Rocky Run Middle School from Math, and she has done so with incredible dedication, flexibility, and a genuine passion for student learning. Despite joining a new content area, she quickly immersed herself in the life science curriculum and found meaningful ways to connect complex concepts to students’ real lives. Her lessons are engaging, accessible, and thoughtfully designed to help all learners succeed. Students at Rocky Run feel comfortable asking questions in her classroom, and her positive relationships with them have had a clear impact on both their confidence and achievement. Beyond the classroom, Molly generously agreed to serve as a co-coach for our Rocky Run Science Olympiad team, even with an already full schedule. Her organization, encouragement, and willingness to go above and beyond have been instrumental in the growth and success of the program. Ronnie Presley, Forte Center

"I am writing to recognize Ronnie Presley and his team at the Forte Center for their truly exceptional service and commitment. We were faced with a critical issue where a number of packages needed to be removed from a delivery truck, but the information provided for the shipment was incorrect, and the truck had already been fully packed and ready for delivery the next business day. He and his team immediately recognized the urgency of the situation and took immediate and decisive action. Ronnie and his staff went "above and beyond" by personally and meticulously working to locate and remove the necessary packages from the fully loaded truck. This was a physically demanding and complex task that required a significant interruption to their regular duties. Their willingness to jump in and help with my problem with such dedication prevented a major error going out to schools and saved considerable time and resources. This level of customer service and dedication to mission success is a testament to the exemplary staff at the Forte Center. I believe Ronnie and his team deserve to be formally recognized for their resourcefulness, teamwork, and commitment to excellence.

Jeannine Magwire, Rocky Run MS

"Jeannine Magwire consistently checks in on the 8th grade English team and does whatever is necessary to support us. I arrived mid-year last year, and she welcomed me enthusiastically, always asking to make sure I had the information I needed and felt supported. My first week, she invited me over to her home so that we could chat/plan for my first couple of weeks. This level of care and consistency has continued in the year since. This past month, during all of the snow, she checked in with me about how I was doing (I had sustained a back injury two weeks prior) and then came over to dig my car out of the snow so I didn't hurt myself. While she was there, she checked in on the other two staff members in my apartment complex, and also walked over to help dig them out. When any of us have been sick/ill, she helps assist in making coverage smooth for us. When I was out with COVID, she even went by Wegmans and grabbed some things for me to drop off at my home. She ALWAYS takes care of her team, and we are SO incredibly grateful for her."

- Jessie Sprouse, Rocky Run MS

Wendy Rath & Emmanuelle Paulston, Haycock ES

"Ms. Rath and Ms. Paulston are the most amazing Kindergarten team. They make every child who walks into that room feel special. They take the strengths of each child and celebrate them, and then use those strengths to support them to work on other areas that they can grow in. They never make a child feel bad for making a mistake or not knowing how to do something. They view mistakes as an opportunity to grow and use each one as a teachable moment. They find the perfect balance of pushing students academically while also knowing the most important thing is that each student walks away from this year loving school. Every day they great my child with a smile and a hug, and every day my child has a bright smile when this happens. I am so thankful for these women and the first year of school they are gifting to my son.

Seung Yang, Stonecroft Transportation

"At about 9:00 PM on Wednesday, February 11, I received a phone call that a fieldtrip bus in Arlington was being towed and another bus would be needed to complete the trip. Additionally, I was told the return portion of the fieldtrip was scheduled for 9:00 PM. Two facts were immediately clear: 1. the return trip would be late, it was unavoidable, and 2. a quick response was needed to mitigate the impact for the students. School bus driver Mr. Seung Yang was contacted. Although, home and done with his workday, Mr. Yang immediately accepted the request to assist. Mr. Yang quickly left his house, drove to his bus, and then departed for Arlington to assist the high school students, their coach, and his fellow bus driver. His near immediate response, professional attitude, and willingness to assist when help was needed made a big difference to those desperate for a ride back to their departure point. Not only did this request come to Mr. Yang unexpectedly but the request also came after a long workday - 9:00 PM is late to a bus driver, who starts early in the morning. For being a standout team player, who puts the students and fellow employees first, the Area 3 Transportation Office is very grateful to Mr. Yang."

- John McCracken, Stonecroft Transportation

Myriam Antayhua, Frost MS

"Ms. A did an amazing job supporting a parent at our most recent Parent Coffee in January. The parent needed support accessing Parent Vue. Ms. A worked to find our school-based technology specialist to provide the technical assistance while she translated for the parent. As a result of her efforts, the student's mother has more access to the information systems and has supported to improve her child's attendance! Way to go!"

- Anthony Harris, Frost MS

Adam Sanchez, West Potomac HS

"Mr. Sanchez was extremely helpful in supporting our admin and security during a day where we had 3 different student groups moving within a small section of the school. He was positive in his interactions with students and staff from multiple schools who were in attendance while WPHS hosted a District choral event."

- Brian Valentine, West Potomac HS

Mais Hasan, Sunrise Valley ES

"Mais is a constant support to our school as a central office sub. She often subs in our building as makes an impact and is currently a long-term sub for one of our PE teachers. While holding this position she had to take a day off to do some things, but even on her day off, she came to help with afternoon dismissal! On her day off! She's the best!"

- Matt Stewart, Sunrise Valley ES

Alison Neun, Stone MS

"At Stone MS we have a leadership class. This class is designed to help students reach and understand their leadership potential. However, Ms. Neun has taken this middle school leadership class farther than teaching the students leadership skills. Ms. Neun has guided these students to have more confidence, speak a little louder, and take ownership in themselves and their actions. Ms. Neun is a wonderful teacher. Outside of the classroom, she is working with our students helping out with our elementary school visits, our high school visit, our end of year promotion events, quarterly celebration pep rallies, various appreciation days/weeks and our summer sendoff event. These events are not small tasks. They require significant coordination, planning and collaboration. She is a teacher modeling all the Portrait of a Graduate attributes. She does it all with a positive attitude and passion for students' success. At the beginning of last year, I shared that we needed to think about what we could do with students on the last day of school to make it fun yet meaningful. Ms. Neun spoke with her colleagues and came up with a great idea which they named summer send off. This was an entire school day planned with various events and activities for the students from karaoke to signing the rock to leave their mark. The day ended with a dance party for all in the gym. It was a great day that the entire building appreciated."

- Sonya Williams, Stone MS

Michelle Whetstone, Jenna Roberts, Nicole Ross & Caitlin Marshall, Virginia Run ES

"The first-grade team is phenomenal to work with: Caitlin Marshall is energetic and engaging, Nikky Ross builds exceptional relationships with her students, Jenna Roberts greets every child with a smile - even those not in her class - and Michelle Whetstone makes learning fun for every student. Together, they create a warm, collaborative environment where both students and colleagues feel supported and inspired."

-Jallene Eckert, Virginia Run ES

Regina Severn & Jessica Green, Virginia Run ES

"As a new member of the CAT A team at the elementary level, I recognize there are areas where I continue to grow professionally. My supervisor, Mrs. Jessica Green, along with our department chair, Regina Severn, established a case manager notebook for our special education team. This resource has been very thoughtful and beneficial in supporting staff organization, consistency, and collaboration within our department."

- Masi Vasef, Virginia Run ES

Mandy Valladares, Cunningham Park ES

"Mandy Valladares has made a massive impact on many of the students at our school. She works with small groups of students who need extra instruction in math in grades 3-6 and these students have made amazing growth because of Mandy's dedication and support. She connects with students in meaningful ways, and they look up to her as a role model. Mandy is always willing to take on more students to work with even when her groups are full. She is a fantastic colleague who goes out of her way to help the other teachers in the building whenever she can. We are so lucky to have her!"

- Jenna Murgia, Cunningham Park ES

Nicholas Amatucci, Churchill Road ES

"Mr. Amatucci is an exceptional special education teacher who consistently goes above and beyond for his students—both past and present. He creates a supportive, inclusive environment where every student feels valued and understood, and his ability to recognize and adapt to each student’s unique learning style allows them to grow academically and personally with confidence. Former students continue to speak highly of him, which speaks volumes about the lasting impact he makes. This year, he has even brought learning to life by raising trout from eggs in his classroom, giving students a meaningful, hands-on opportunity to understand the life cycle. Beyond the classroom, Mr. Amatucci is deeply invested in the entire school community. He builds strong, respectful relationships not only with the students on his caseload but also with many families throughout the building. Parents trust and respect him, valuing his insight, communication, and genuine care for their children’s success. He also serves on the school social committee, helping to organize events that support and connect staff. Mr. Amatucci also runs the school safety patrol program, ensuring student safety across the building—especially during arrival and dismissal. Calm, patient, and consistently supportive, Mr. Amatucci approaches every interaction with professionalism, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to students and families alike."

Grace Ma, Eagle View ES

"Mrs. Grace Ma is an exceptional teacher who has brought out the very best in my daughter. During the school year under Mrs. Ma’s mentorship my daughter has flourished and vastly improved in all areas. Mrs. Ma has helped my daughter learn to read and write and have a passion for learning. This includes geography and history. My daughter now has the confidence to share her new knowledge of the world and write a book which Mrs. Ma kindly said my daughter could share in class when she is finished writing it."

Mariko Nojima, Centreville HS

"I wanted to give a huge thanks to this one teacher Ms. Nojima. Ms. Nojima is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met, and even though I’ve never had her. She always goes out her way to help others by taking the time out of her class and lunch period. One time I was bawling my eyes out because I was so stressed out, and I felt bad because I was disrupting her lunchtime. However, she made me feel that I was being heard and that’s not what many teachers do. They don’t go out their way during lunch time to help out a student venting and crying. She also always thinks of other students’, she checks up on students making sure they’re doing okay outside of school, and I couldn’t have thanked her enough."

Matilda White, Herndon ES

"Matilda White is a 1st year teacher with a seasoned teacher attitude, approach towards learning and dedication to her students. She has creative ideas, encourages the students to be their best and is able to make learning fun! Her 6th graders are engaged and meet or exceed her expectations! "Ms. Armstrong and Ms. Chohan truly set the tone for our school the moment anyone walks through the front doors. They go above and beyond to create a loving and inclusive environment where every student, family, and staff member feels welcomed and valued. Whether they are walking a student to class, supporting a parent with a concern, or managing a busy morning rush, they remain calm, kind, and steady. Their presence helps turn what could be a stressful moment into one that feels supported and cared for. They are always thinking ahead and anticipating what our school needs. Their teamwork is seamless, and the joy they bring to the front office spreads throughout the building. They are the heart of our welcome and the backbone of our daily operations. Thank you, Christie and Farah, for the care, professionalism, and positivity you bring to our school community every single day. We are so grateful for you both."

Carmen Galindo Calderon, Stonecroft Transportation

"Carmen Galindo Calderon is an Area 7 bus driver supervisor in charge of fieldtrips for the Area 3 Transportation Office. She does an excellent job of performing her job duties. What makes her exceptional is her willingness to go above and beyond to ensure fieldtrips go smoothly for the students, school staff, and for the bus drivers transporting both students and staff. Many fieldtrips, especially for sporting events, occur after regular operating hours or on non-school days. This means when there is an issue, staff are already home for the evening. More than once, Ms. Galindo has shown she is willing to take action outside of regular hours to ensure successful fieldtrips. The other night, she was contacted at 9:00 PM and quickly arranged for another driver and bus to pick-up students from a trip in Arlington after the initial fieldtrip bus was unable to be used to transport the students home. She does not worry about the hour or any inconvenience but dedicatedly puts the students and her fellow employees first and simply gets to work serving them. Ms. Galindo is an asset to the Office of Transportation Services."

-John McCracken, Stonecroft Transportation

Stephany Mercedes, Davis Career Center

"When I think about Mrs. Mercedes and ways, she exemplifies someone who cares about not only our school but our community as well, I see a colleague who has stepped into a very special, very unique school community and embraced all aspects of the work and said, “WE GOT THIS!” We Mustangs are small, but we are magically mighty and supporting all that might requires a lot of grit and planning. Mrs. Mercedes often has a line out the door as staff line up at her office in the mornings. Most of the time they walk away with both the items they need and a smile on their face because they’ve had a chance to talk about family or themselves because Mrs. Mercedes remembers and cares about those details because she knows that around here, family comes first! She herself is a mom to a little one and her husband is also an FCPS staff member. Those small details are what make Mrs. Mercedes so endearing to others and make her office such a welcoming space for staff, students, and school visitors. Now don’t be misled, Mrs. Mercedes is a model of efficiency and hard work! Serving as both the principal’s administrative assistant and the school’s finance technician, she is constantly busy throughout the day; however, she is never too busy to stop and help a student who has come into the office with a question or too busy to take time on the phone to assist a parent in need of guidance. Today, I asked Mrs. Mercedes to help our school social worker call a parent and navigate a very sensitive conversation, which needed to be held in Spanish. It was important to me that Mrs. Mercedes be part of this conversation because she is a representative of our wonderful school, she has been part of similar conversations with me in the past, and she is extremely talented and compassionate with families of students with disabilities and helping ensure they understand what needs to be stated and simultaneously strengthening the relationship with the school. The outcome of the conversation was very positive, and the parent and student felt very supported by our school. I am grateful to Mrs. Mercedes for her support and for ensuring that this particular family felt supported and that our Davis Center community was able to offer the support that this family needs."

- Katie Peterson, Cunningham Park ES

Daniella Reed, Oak Hill ES

"When my mother got sick and then passed away, I was so impressed at the love support shown by the entire faculty. When I returned from the funeral, I received a hug and condolences from everyone I passed. Then when I came to my room there were flowers and a gift card for Uber Eats. I feel so appreciated at this school and I am just the High-Impact Teacher. I believe Daniella Reed is behind most of the kindness but still a large majority of the staff has been so supportive. Thank you, Oak Hill."

-Keri Jessee, Oak Hill ES

Edwin Romero, Pablo Constanza & Neris Velasquez, Great Falls ES

"The custodians at Great Falls ES did a phenomenal job clearing all of the snow and ice! Our parking lot, bus loop, and sidewalks have never been clearer after a snowstorm! In addition, his lessons are planned with inclusion in mind, giving students choices and multiple entry points for accessing the content through engaging and flexible assignments."

- Laura Noueihed, Hughes MS

Michelle Flanigan, Cunningham Park ES

"It takes a special kind of educator to survive their first year as a Multilingual Services teacher, but it takes someone truly exceptional to thrive while balancing two different worlds. Michelle Flanigan has begun her first year as a ML teacher at Cunningham Park and Churchill Road Elementary School. What makes Michelle stand out isn't just her logistics management, but the aplomb with which she handles the transition. Whether she is in her morning building or her afternoon classroom, she comes to work with the ability to seamlessly navigate two different school cultures and schedules without missing a beat. She is building deep, meaningful connections with her English Language Learners, ensuring they feel seen and supported in both locations. She has brought a "can-do" spirit that has made a tangible difference in her students' confidence and language acquisition and supported our ML instructional team greatly this year. She demonstrates the idea of the irish philosopher/poet W.B. Yeats, that says, "Educators are not here to fill a pail, they are here to light a fire." I think her students would agree that she works hard to light the fires of their minds in thoughtful, authentic, culturally relevant discussion. Thank you Michelle for all you do."

- Matthew Hupp, Cunningham Park ES

Anita Jewett, Virginia Run ES

"Anita is so caring and kind to her colleagues. She is always ready with words of encouragement and support. - Kate Beckner, Dogwood ES

Bola Shehata, Wakefield Forest ES

"Our new Building Supervisor Bola started on January 26th after the huge snowstorm. One member of our custodial team couldn't get his vehicle free, so Bola offered to pick him up and take him home so they could work on the school snow removal. A beautiful example of teamwork on day one."

- Sharyn Prindle, Wakefield Forest ES

Juliana Woodill, Fairfax HS

"Juliana Woodill brings a melody and personality to each classroom and team that she touches. She is an active member of our guiding coalition and a standards based grading trailblazer. Her leadership and support has been paramount to teacher teams here at FHS. This is in addition to leading a dynamic and innovative choral program that promotes inclusivity and belonging through song."

- Georgina Aye, Fairfax HS

Tiffany Hitz, Robinson Secondary

"Mrs. Hitz is the middle school band director at Robinson Secondary School. We recently attended the Jazz Band Sweets 'n Swing concert and we were blown away with the quality of music that we were blessed with. My son is a trumpet player and loves Mrs. Hitz. She has encouraged him the past two years to take risks such as solo and ensemble festival and district band. What is amazing is that Mrs. Hitz ALWAYS has a smile on her face. It is so evident that she truly loves working with our children and has made lasting connections with them. Her positivity is infectious. She is a true gem of Fairfax County Public Schools."

Tanisha Lee, West Potomac HS

" It is with great appreciation and admiration that I would like to take a moment and say “Thank You” to Ms. Tanisha Lee. She is a first-year teacher who has gone above and beyond her duties here at West Potomac High School, showing grace, dedication, and great team spirit in all her endeavors. She has taken on her role as an Intellectual Disabilities teacher with compassion and creativity. She creates opportunities for them to grow and learn while at the same time supporting her team members with impromptu breakfasts, supply boxes, and all-around comradery. She has also funded the purchase of items on her own to help facilitate an after-school fundraiser for the special education department. She is a team player, an advocate for both students and staff and a great addition to this team. Kudos to Ms. Lee for all that she does and continues to do."

-Lawrence Cooper, West Potomac HS

Rebecca Wilkinson, Nati Urbon, Jordan Jones, Jerilee Williams, Adri Postiglioni & Amanda Castellucci, Woodburn ES

"I would like to recognize our incredible ESOL team for their thoughtfulness, intentionality, and unwavering commitment to supporting our multilingual learners this school year. They have taken meaningful steps to strengthen supports for students, including partnering with teachers to implement GLAD strategies across the building. Their collaborative approach has positively impacted instruction schoolwide and reflects their deep commitment to ensuring multilingual learners have access to high-quality learning experiences. I have been especially impressed by their intentional use of data to drive decision-making and truly support students by name and by need. This was evident in their approach to the new ELD common assessments. They strategically assessed early in the testing windows so they could use the data to form targeted small groups. They also advocated for all students to complete the winter ELD common assessment, even though it was not a district requirement, allowing them to make informed decisions as they prepared for the current WIDA window. Additionally, their incorporation of student goal setting has been powerful. By helping students understand their language development progress—especially those nearing WIDA exit—they have fostered ownership, motivation, and confidence. This team is exceptional, and we are incredibly fortunate to work alongside such dedicated professionals. They truly embody the spirit of FCPS through their advocacy, collaboration, and relentless focus on student success."

- Kelley Dauberman, Woodburn ES

Dan Meredith, Gatehouse Admin Center

-Dennis Michaels, Fort Hunt ES

Laura Thieman, Willow Oaks Admin Center

"Laura Thieman is genuinely incredible and one of the most thoughtful, collaborative, and mission-driven colleagues I have the privilege to work alongside. Over the past year, we have partnered on several initiatives focused on attendance and family engagement, and her impact has been both meaningful and far-reaching. Laura consistently goes above and beyond to support schools and families. She has developed and delivered thoughtful, engaging presentations for school leaders focused on attendance, belonging, and fostering inclusive school cultures. Her ability to translate complex systems into clear, compassionate messaging has helped schools better understand how to support students and families in authentic and proactive ways. In addition, Laura has been instrumental in supporting families directly. Through her participation in the Title I Parent Advisory Committee, she has helped parents better understand the wellness supports available to them, ensuring families feel informed, valued, and connected. She approaches this work with empathy and clarity, always centering student and family well-being. Laura is also an exceptional thought partner. She is always available to listen, collaborate, and generate innovative ideas to address chronic absenteeism and engagement challenges. Through her office’s support, we are continuing a program that will serve 20 schools over spring break, strengthening student and family engagement during a critical time of the year. This work would not be possible without her leadership and commitment. Proactively and without prompting, she offered to provide additional clinical support during the program to ensure any emerging needs are addressed. What truly sets Laura apart is her unwavering dedication to collaboration and care. -a Union Mill ES parent

Krista O'Connell, Gatehouse Admin Center

"Krista O'Connell, ORPE, has been a phenomenal teammate in support of the Boundary Change and Transportation Cost estimation process. A final last step in the process is to survey the impacted families on transportation needs and desires to better inform the School Board's decision-making process. She has singlehandedly guided the team through the survey development process and written the survey to ensure we receive informative data from a small population. What really stands out is positive attitude under an extremely tight timeline and several senior leaders involved. None of this phased her in the slightest. We are on track because of her energy, attitude, expertise, and persistence. Thank you, Shipmate!"

- Andy Mueck, Gatehouse Admin Center

Her leadership in organizing our Lunar New Year celebration brings students, staff, and families together in joyful and meaningful ways. Through performances such as the dragon dance and wushu demonstrations at Heritage Night, she creates opportunities for students to proudly share their culture while enriching the school’s multicultural spirit. Ms. Qian exemplifies the FCPS CARES values through her compassion, collaboration, and unwavering commitment to equity and community. Her work makes our school a more welcoming, inclusive, and joyful place for all."

Renae Polovchik, Mount Eagle ES

"When you walk into Renae’s kindergarten classroom, you are surrounded by students excited about learning. Renae creates a loving and caring classroom community where students feel comfortable taking risks on their own but also enjoy working and playing together. Students feel safe, supported, and motivated in this learning environment from both teachers and each other. At any moment you can see students smiling and laughing as they problem solve during explore time, show persistence on an independent task or focus during one of Renae’s engaging lessons. The nurturing structure Renae has built is the perfect place for kindergarteners to learn and grow. A defining strength Renae has is her ability to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of all her students both academically and socially. She thoughtfully adapts lessons to build language and understanding through the use of movement, visuals, song, and talk time to process what they have learned. She meets her students where they are with patience, kindness, and enthusiasm. They feel confident as learners and proud of their accomplishments—no matter how big or small. Every child is seen, encouraged, and celebrated. Renae takes the time to build strong relationships within her classroom, with families, and with other teachers who support her students. She greets everyone with a smile on her face and welcomes them in. When planning together, Renae’s flexibility and creativity come out as she strives to include all the resources coming into the classroom to support the wide range of needs of her students. Joan Swanson, Hayfield Secondary

"Under Mrs. Swanson’s instruction, my son experienced a transformation in his relationship with mathematics that I never thought possible. Through her consistent encouragement of daily Reflex practice—and her daily motivating and encouraging messages sent through TalkingPoints—she created a supportive, structured, and highly motivating learning environment. These messages reinforced expectations, celebrated progress, and helped keep my son engaged and accountable in a way that truly resonated with him. As a result, he became significantly more confident and capable in math, an area in which he had struggled for many years. For the first time in his life, my 12-year-old genuinely enjoys mathematics and proudly asks to be quizzed on his multiplication tables. This milestone reflects not only academic improvement but a meaningful shift in confidence and self-belief. Mrs. Swanson’s impact extends far beyond curriculum standards. Her daily communication, patience, and unwavering commitment to her students’ success exceed any educational experience my son has previously had. She has instilled resilience, confidence, and a love of learning that will benefit him well beyond the classroom. I am deeply grateful that my son had the opportunity to learn from such an exceptional educator. Mrs. Swanson exemplifies the very best of teaching, and I thank her wholeheartedly."

Wendy Rath, Haycock ES

"Ms. Rath goes above and beyond to build community at Haycock. She builds such strong, lasting relationships that even years later, students who had her in kindergarten still seek her out. My current 3rd graders always look forward to visiting Ms. Rath and she supports students far beyond their time in her classroom. When a few students needed extra time to connect, Ms. Rath found ways for the 3rd graders to help out in her classroom - the highlight of their week!"

- Christina Wisniewski, Haycock ES

Natalie Hill, South Lakes HS

"Natalie Hill is an exceptional employee in our SPED Department. When most people were enjoying a relaxing snow day, Natalie was busy notifying parents of cancelled SPED meetings and letting staff know of potential rescheduling. She was also scheduling, and reworking the calendar over and over again with each closing and delay announcement. This went on for several weeks and she did it all professionally and respectfully, being mindful of parents and staff needs. Also while providing support and taking part in her normal end-of-quarter duties with staff. It is because of her that we have been able to handle this massive wrench in our ability to stay in compliance with our SPED meetings. She is invaluable to the South Lakes SPED department."

- Candice Johnson, South Lakes HS

Shan Ahmad, Lorton Center

"Following the recent snowstorm, a concerned parent contacted Shan regarding an icy walking path between a daycare and a bus stop. While the daycare and the local shopping center were in a dispute over who was responsible for clearing the ice, Shan took it upon himself to resolve the situation. He personally visited the site to assess the conditions. While the bus stop itself was clear, he noted that the walking path was indeed hazardous. Even though clearing public pathways falls outside his official transportation duties, Shan grabbed a shovel and cleared the path himself. His proactive approach ensured that students could travel to their bus stop safely, demonstrating a level of care that truly defines the FCPS spirit."

- Jefferey Scales, Lorton Center

"This team of TSSpecs and Sr. TSSpecs assisted an instructional support partner and helped to facilitate a large staff training that involved new devices and new software. The request for assistance came very late and had to be done in spite of the ice and snow that was impeding many county operations at the time. Despite all of these challenges, these individuals coordinated support and showed up in person to ensure this groups professional development session was successful. This dedication reflects the strong collaboration and execution efforts that TSSpecs provide throughout the calendar year."

Lisa Lujan, Cunningham Park ES

"Lisa Lujan goes above and beyond to support students, their families, and staff who are facing challenges. Not only does she have keen insights into students, families, and teachers and what they need, but she is able to connect them to strategies, resources, and assistance through working contacts throughout the fcps community and the community at large. She has been working flat-out since the pandemic to help families and students in crisis, teaming with others to provide food, clothing, mental health assistance, legal and health referrals, and so much more, while still maintaining her regular counselor duties. I have been awe-struck with the level of care she has provided to our school community, and when she doesn't have the answers, she has connected with others who do. She is our one-stop shop for social work, social-emotional health, physical health and needs, counseling needs, strategies, and a tissue and hug when it all gets too hard. I appreciate her tireless efforts to give ALL of our students access to what they need."
