FCPS CARES of the Quarter | Winter 2026
Jae Lemeshewsky, Sandburg MS

"Jae Lemeshewsky, affectionately known as Ms. L, embodies the spirit of Panther Pride at Sandburg Middle School and is a truly exceptional candidate for the FCPS CARES award. She is a compassionate instructional assistant whose impact extends far beyond her job description, fostering a culture of care, growth, and goodwill within our school and the wider community. Ms. L is the heart of Sandburg's welcoming environment, consistently greeting students and staff with warmth and a genuine smile. She has developed a unique and powerful tradition to welcome all new staff members: a potted plant and a $2 bill. • The Plant: Ms. L believes that much like plants; we all require care and nurturing to grow. This gift is a beautiful, daily reminder that by treating one another with kindness and respect, we set a powerful example that helps our students flourish. The $2 Bill: More than just currency, the $2 bill is a symbol of good luck and prosperity. This cherished tradition has become a signature part of Sandburg's culture, with the bills often spotted around the school and even carried by former Sandburg staff now serving as leaders throughout FCPS, a testament to the lasting nature of her goodwill. Ms. L's profound compassion reaches well beyond the walls of Sandburg Middle School.

For over 12 years, she has dedicated her time as a gymnastics instructor at The Mount Vernon Recreation Center. Demonstrating an extraordinary commitment to service, she has voluntarily donated every paycheck to the Fairfax County Park Foundation to purchase much-needed gymnastics equipment for the Rec Center. In every gymnastics class, Ms. L brings her deep love for teaching and working with children, enriching her instruction with a "touch of magic," lessons on healthy eating, and sign language instruction. Ms. L exemplifies what it means to be an invaluable member of the FCPS community. Her traditions and actions foster a culture where everyone—students, staff, and the entire community—can grow and thrive. Through her tireless service, thoughtful gestures, and unwavering belief in the power of kindness, Jae Lemeshewsky truly makes Sandburg Middle School and FCPS community a better place."

Central Office

Rue De La Bay & Maged Gerges, Facilities and Maintenance Satellite Office
"I would like to recognize Rue De La Bay, Field Engineer, and Maged Gerges, HVAC Technician, for their exceptional care and dedication in supporting my students’ learning environment. At the start of this school year, my classroom blower motor had become so loud that it was nearly impossible for students to clearly hear instruction. Because my class relies heavily on discussion and student engagement, the constant noise disrupted learning and made communication frustrating for both students and myself. Although the issue had been identified last spring, it had not been resolved, and our building engineer was unavailable to follow up. Even though he was only temporarily assigned to our building, Rue De La Bay took ownership of the situation and ensured that the problem was addressed quickly. He coordinated with Maged Gerges to replace the worn-out motor, even though it would have been easy to delay the repair until more resources were available. Their commitment to resolving the issue demonstrated not only professionalism but also a deep understanding of how facilities work directly impacts teaching and learning. When Mr. De La Bay and Mr. Gerges arrived, they worked efficiently and respectfully, completing the repair with minimal disruption to my class schedule. They treated the issue with the utmost seriousness, and when the job was finished, they left the space spotless. My students and I were struck by their kindness and professionalism throughout the process. The impact of their work has been profound. My classroom is now calm and inviting, and discussions flow easily without the distraction of background noise. Students can hear one another and engage more fully, and I can focus on teaching rather than battling against the hum of an overworked motor. What once caused daily stress for us has been transformed into a positive and productive learning environment. Facilities and maintenance professionals like Mr. De La Bay and Mr. Gerges are often overlooked as essential members of the teaching team, but their work is vital. They go above and beyond to ensure that classrooms are safe, comfortable, and conducive to learning. In this case, their care directly restored my classroom to a place where students can thrive. I am deeply grateful for their responsiveness, thoroughness, and professionalism. Thanks to their efforts, my students now have the quiet, focused environment they deserve. Rue De La Bay and Maged Gerges embody the spirit of FCPS CARES by demonstrating that every role in our schools plays an important part in supporting student success."

Ken Junge, Felecia Allen & Faye Cofer, Colvin Run ES
"There are moments as a parent you never forget, and one of mine was the day my kindergartener was so overwhelmed he couldn’t stop crying before entering school. He clung on to me, not wanting to go in and I felt helpless and unsure how he would let go—until Mr. Junge stepped in. With remarkable compassion he was able to take him inside. His comforting words helped us so much. That simple yet profound act reflects the very essence of who he is: a role model principal who leads with kindness, humanity, and unwavering support for both students and families. In that moment, he saw my son’s need and immediately stepped in to help. He is, without a doubt, the very best. I am also deeply thankful to Ms. Cofer and Mrs. Allen. That same morning, my son spent time with Ms. Cofer, who spoke with him before he was guided back to class. Later, at pickup, Ms. Allen comforted me in a way that truly eased my heart. Together, they showed me that Colvin Run is more than a school—it is a family where everyone comes together to create a warm, supportive environment. I am endlessly grateful for the grace and care they all showed when it mattered most."

Amy Marketos, Falls Church High School

"Amy's action towards a student who faces serious health challenges truly showed her compassion and dedication. She went above and beyond to make sure the student felt supported and cared for. She motivated other school staff to join her. She prepared a beautiful and meaningful basket containing games, books, a special teddy bear, and other thoughtful items for him and his mother as well. She visited them at their home and shared an encouraging message. That kind of kindness makes a big difference. Thank you, Amy, for leading with empathy and heart. It inspires all of us!"

Joni Fraundorfer, Franklin MS

"Our family is incredibly grateful for the extraordinary support that school counselor Joni Fraundorfer provided during one of the most challenging years we have ever faced. When our child experienced significant struggles with anxiety and depression, including a medical leave from school, Joni was an unwavering source of compassion and guidance for both our child and our family. She went far above and beyond checking in with us regularly, taking calls after hours, and even sharing her personal cell phone number so we could reach her whenever we needed to. Most importantly, Joni became a trusted adult at school. In a year when our child often felt lost and overwhelmed, she was a steady, caring presence who helped them feel safe, seen, and understood. Her dedication, empathy, and advocacy truly made a life-changing difference, and we are confident the year would have gone very differently without her support. Joni’s work has had a profound impact not only on our child, but on our entire family. She exemplifies what it means to care deeply for students, and we are so thankful that she is part of our school community."

Alicia Fyfe, Forestdale ES
"I just wanted to take a moment to share a few words about Alicia Fyfe and the incredible support she has provided. Last year was my first year in EAC, and I had the pleasure of working with Alicia to secure all the necessary equipment to support my Special Education students across multiple grade levels. She patiently walked me through the use of each device and even helped arrange replacements when needed. Her support made a huge difference during a time when everything felt new. Our connection grew even stronger during ESY (Extended School Year) this summer. Alicia made the device checkout and return process absolutely seamless. She scanned all the computers in, checked out the ones I needed, and ensured everything was organized and efficient — it made the whole experience amazing. What truly stands out about Alicia is her dedication. Just this morning, she followed up with me about my students’ computers. She not only remembered my roster but also understood the IEP needs of my students — sometimes better than I did! Her thoughtful, proactive communication continues to make my job easier and more effective. Even though Alicia is only part-time at Forestdale, her impact is full-time. Her love for her work is obvious — especially during the hectic start of the school year. Her attention to detail, organizational skills, and gentle reminders to take care of our equipment are appreciated by both staff and students. We are incredibly fortunate to have her on our team."

Sabrina Clarke, Sandburg MS
"As a parent of a student with a food allergy, I reached out to Sabrina Clarke, Cafeteria Manager at Sandburg Middle, for a question on information I received from FCPS Food & Nutrition. Ms. Clarke responded promptly via email and also reached with a phone call. She was caring, kind and very sincere in communicating with me over the phone as well as follow up in email. She is responsible for feeding so many students and I have been so impressed with her responsiveness and professionalism for a single student/parent concern. Thank you for caring about students at Sandburg MS."

Choong Chung, Wilton Woods Center
"I want to express my deep appreciation for Chris Chung. Chris was recently assigned as the network engineer to my site, Hutchison ES. He has gone far above and beyond in resolving a network-related issue which has been going on at Hutchison for a long time. (Previous network engineers also really gave their best trying to resolve this, so I want it to be understood that I really appreciate that entire department.) He put in hours troubleshooting the problem on-site, he researched solutions from other schools, and he worked with his colleagues to come up with a workable solution to this problem, which has been an annoyance and inconvenience for some staff members at Hutchison for a long time."
- Brian Crosson, Hutchison ES
Arian Walker Roberts, Patrick Fauver, Julia Hills, Reginald Dixon, Kristie Pepin, Rusi Rahman & Jeffrey Weinstein, Franklin MS
"The Franklin Middle School Adapted Curriculum Department exemplifies the spirit of FCPS Cares, demonstrating remarkable dedication to meeting the unique needs of every student. This recognition is for the staff's proactive and compassionate response to the arrival of a new student who is nonverbal, on the Autism spectrum, and who recently immigrated from Saudi Arabia. To better connect with and support this student, the entire team has taken it upon themselves to learn the 40 most common Arabic words. They carry pocket-sized reference sheets daily to aid in this effort, ensuring they can use these words consistently throughout the school day. Beyond verbal communication, the staff has also worked to create a more welcoming and accessible classroom environment. They have converted the signage in the classroom to include both English and Arabic. This simple but powerful step helps the student feel more comfortable and fosters a greater sense of belonging and inclusion."
- Amanda Lombardi, Franklin MS
Eric Williams, Hayfield Secondary
"I would like to recognize Mr. Eric Williams, a counselor at Hayfield Secondary School. My daughter has been one of his advisees for her 3+ years at Hayfield and he has always gone above and beyond. He has helped her to believe in herself, even when she didn't think she was capable of taking harder classes. He has helped her learn how to advocate for herself and her Section 504 rights. He has made sure she was always placed in classes where she could thrive. And when she had any difficulties (particularly issues with anxiety) he was always there for her, a calming and supportive presence. He has made her experience at Hayfield immeasurably better because she knows he is always there for her, and always ready to advocate for and support her."
-a Hayfield Secondary parent

No matter what, she demonstrates kindness, empathy, and care for everyone in the building. She makes sure that our community is equipped with the materials that we (students and staff) need and will need so that our learning is not interrupted. She is always available, willing, and energized. Xiomara’s support keeps our school running smoothly. Whether she’s caring for a kindergartener with a scraped knee or supporting a student who just needs a quiet moment to regroup, her approach is always filled with kindness and respect. She creates a safe and welcoming space in the health room, where students feel heard, comforted, and cared for. His door is always open, and he makes you feel like you are never an interruption, no matter how busy he may be. She was proactive not only in letting me know what was going on but also in coming up with various possible solutions that she then tested out. She was a great listener, thorough in her efforts, and very caring. My child thrived in her classroom and the lessons learned through her efforts carry on beyond it. Kathy Shankle & Amy Lorvidhaya, Daniels Run ES
"Since beginning the implementation of Benchmark in August 2024, we have been carefully and kindly guided and supported by our reading specialists, Kathy Shankle and Amy Lorvidhaya. The amount of information that has been distributed to them, as well as that which has been filtered, prepared, and presented to us, is truly incalculable. The transition to Benchmark has seen both roses and thorns, but one of the biggest positive outcomes has been the opportunity to work more closely with our reading team and to feel, every day, the ways they keep themselves in our corners. When big changes come to something as significant as the Language Arts curriculum, there is bound to be uncertainty. When we bombard her with questions, Kathy is never afraid to say "I don't know, but I can find out." And then we get a follow-up to our question. They have helped support VALLSS testing, reading plan creation, and provided direct intervention to our neediest students. They have worked with teachers to help them feel more comfortable with Benchmark materials and intervention programs. They have collected and analyzed data, created materials, and helped in the classrooms when needed. And they have patiently heard our concerns, validated our feelings, and continued to do everything they can to improve our daily outlook and minimize stress. I am grateful to have had them with us for this immense transition."
- Meredith Hulley, Daniels Run ES
Danny Tsang, West Springfield HS
"Mr. Tsang has been an invaluable member of our counseling department, consistently going above and beyond to support the mission and vision of our work. He has created tools and efficiencies that benefit the entire department, and his willingness to step in whenever help is needed reflects his strong sense of teamwork and commitment. Over time, Mr. Tsang has embraced leadership roles, offering guidance to new counselors and providing critical support in areas such as assessment. He plays an active role in after-school clubs, where he builds meaningful connections with students by engaging in their interests beyond the classroom. Currently, Mr. Tsang serves as a mentor for new counselors, a role in which he has been instrumental to our onboarding process. His dedication shines through in the time he devotes to checking in on his mentee and responding to the evolving needs of the department. His selflessness, reliability, and leadership have strengthened our team and enriched the experiences of both staff and students. We are deeply grateful for Mr. Tsang’s dedication, passion, and the countless ways he supports our school community."

-Emily Phelan, Chantilly HS
Samantha Goldstein & Meghan Ehrman, Fairview ES
"My child has been in the county's pilot program for Algebra I Honors for sixth graders. Through the last few weeks, Ms. Goldstein and Ms. Ehrman have been communicative and supportive of this ambitious ask for elementary schoolers. They have sought out student voice, addressed parental concerns, and even taken the time to coach my child one-on-one on how to effectively self-advocate when they thought a decision was unfair. I am grateful to know that we have compassionate educators and leaders like them to humanize what could otherwise be a program that lacks connection."
-a Fairview ES parent
Patti Boore, Lorton Center

Patti responds quickly to emergencies. She communicates well with our team and helps problem solve. We are grateful for her commitment and knowledge in helping families who experience homelessness obtain school stability."
- Amity Kim, Willow Oaks Admin Center
Zoey Lee & Deborah Alsado, Westbriar ES
"On August 22, 2025, while serving her crosswalk duty, Ms. Zoey Lee demonstrated remarkable attentiveness and quick thinking. She noticed a vehicle in the main flow of traffic near our Kiss and Ride line that appeared to be stalled. When she approached to check on the driver, she quickly recognized that something was wrong. With calm professionalism, Ms. Lee engaged the driver, persuaded him to move his vehicle safely to the side of the road, and immediately sought assistance from Mrs. Debbie Alsado to notify administration. This allowed school leadership to contact the proper authorities, who were able to take over the situation. Thanks to Ms. Lee’s presence of mind and swift response, and the assistance of Mrs. Alsado, what could have become a very serious crisis was averted. We are deeply grateful for her vigilance, composure, and commitment to the safety of our students, families, and staff."
- Sallie Burch, Westbriar ES
Carla Tricoli-Rodriguez, Fort Hunt ES
"Carla Tricoli is an exceptionally kind and supportive coworker who consistently goes above and beyond to enrich our school community. Despite a long daily commute, Ms. Tricoli arrives every day ready to give her very best to her students and colleagues. Her reliability and dedication are truly inspiring and speak volumes about her commitment to our school. Ms. Tricoli's passion for our Spanish Immersion program is evident in everything she does. She sets high standards for herself and for our team, encouraging all of us to take full advantage of professional development opportunities that strengthen and elevate the program. Last year, when our team needed a leader, she stepped in as team lead, providing thoughtful guidance, organization, and leadership that benefited our program and staff. You can often hear her speaking Spanish with her students in the hallway, modeling the language and culture she works so hard to nurture in our school. Ms. Tricoli embodies the very best qualities of leadership, passion, and kindness that strengthen our school community. She is a shining example of how dedication, collaboration, and continuous growth can make a meaningful difference, and we are fortunate to have her as part of our team"
-Linda Myers, Fort Hunt ES
Alexander MacDonald, Mount Eagle ES
"Zander embodies all of those traits that students hope for in a teacher…he is positive, patient, and great fun to be around! Whenever you see or hear Zander communicating with his students, rather they are in kindergarten or 6th grade, it is always with kindness and respect. He has such a positive attitude as he welcomes his classes into the gym and provides a safe and nurturing environment for all of our students. It is certainly no small task to set up all of the activities that are required in the physical education program, but if you ever are walking by the gym, you can hear that those activities are always organized and engaging. (Well, organized chaos maybe!) Mount Eagle is fortunate to have Zander on our team! Go Eagles!"
-Kara Reid, Mount Eagle ES
Christina Byun, Allison Cupit, Amtul Chaudhry, Christian Love & Freddi Markson, Pulley Center
" Huge kudos to the staff working with the Culinary/Cafe team at Pulley Career Center for an astonishingly professional opening to the student-run Brew-Tea-Ful Cafe! When I walked in on the first day of their soft opening, I found it hard to believe this wasn't a team who'd been running the place for months already. Student roles were clear, practiced, and so professional. Staff supported as needed but didn't over prompt, which really allowed the Cafe team to shine. It's clear staff and students worked hard to prepare and to find everyone's best first role during the first month of school. I look forward to being a customer throughout this school year, and I can't wait to see how they grow from here!"
- Heather Frei, Pulley Center
Ki Hyun Park, Woodson IT
"I want to give a big shout out to Mr. Parks, who came to my office to change my phone. He did an excellent job, very professional, efficient, and clearly knowledgeable in what he does. He definitely deserves recognition for his great work!"

- Sonya Williams, Stone MS
Katie White, Mount Vernon Woods ES
"Katie has been such an incredible support, beyond the administration team, to myself as a new administer in a new building, as well as the entire staff. While she has been fulfilling her role as the primary math lead and MTSS coordinator, she has also become a trusted adult to a student who is struggling with their transition to a new school and meeting that student's teacher with support and coaching. She is always flexible with her time and schedule to support the immediate needs of the school, while ensure that her additional duties are met. It is comforting to have a staff member who you can always rely on to drop everything to support immediate needs, while knowing that her primary responsibilities will not suffer."
- Kevin Heron, Mount Vernon Woods ES

We are so grateful for the significant positive impact you have at South County High School."
-Samantha Tolan, South County HS
Kara Stamper, Centreville HS
"Kara Stamper has been a huge support for Mountain View. Our College and Career Specialist position is currently vacant, and she has been an invaluable resource for us as we have tried to make sure information, and resources still make it to our students in the absence of a College and Career Specialist. She shares the resources she is providing to students, passes along information and shares recommendations on sharing that information with our students and families. I know it takes effort and time to remember to loop Mountain View in when information is shared, and we are so grateful of her time, effort, and support!"
- Jennifer Crump Strawderman, Mountain View HS
Ellen Giuliano, Holmes MS
"I would like to take a moment to recognize Ellen Giuliano at Holmes Middle School for her exceptional professionalism and grace under pressure. With minimal time to adjust, Transportation had to request a change to the date of a field trip Ellen had carefully planned for her students. Despite the inconvenience, Ellen handled the situation with tact and composure through multiple phone calls and emails. Her ability to remain calm and collaborative in the face of adversity is truly admirable and a testament to her dedication. Ellen’s resilience and positive attitude are a tremendous asset to FCPS, and we are grateful for her continued support and partnership."

Their attention to detail and thorough process were evident in every step, and it made a huge difference in the smooth and successful execution of the event. Their commitment and ability to handle so many moving parts were truly impressive, and their hard work was deeply appreciated by everyone involved."

Their impact is both meaningful and lasting, and we cannot thank them enough for all that they do."
- John Basta, West Springfield HS
Robyn Jones, Rocky Run MS
"Robyn Jones is a safety and security assistant at Rocky Run Middle School. Every morning, she directs the traffic during arrival and navigates a complicated intersection. There are cars entering, cars leaving, buses entering, busing leaving, and students crossing the street. "Over the past two weeks, our Foreign Language department has rallied behind each other, to provide safe and secure instructional spaces, as our school has dealt with a serious building concern. Several of the rooms on our language hallway registered poor air flow and quality that necessitated those classrooms to receive a variety of support and remediation machines, many of which can be very loud when operating. Everyone in the department worked together to share classroom space, as well as their department workroom, to facilitate each teacher’s classes, and provide safe learning environments for our student body. This is a testament of how close each of the teachers within their department are, and also how committed each one of them is to our student body. Not once, did any of them say we can't teach today! Instead, they coordinated with their assistant principal, and each other, and ensured that each language class proceeded without delay. Thank you to our wonderful, thoughtful, and talented foreign language department, for their ultimate commitment to ensuring our students receive the best instruction possible."

The entire Marching Atoms, including the color guards, walked over to Annandale Terrace on a beautiful Friday afternoon to our back field by sharing their music with over 650 students and staff kicking off another exciting school year. Thank you, Zach and the Marching Atoms, for joining us and supporting the pyramid elementary school by sharing your music. We appreciate you!"

"In over 29 years in education — including 15 years in School Administration — I have never had to submit a Hearings Office Packet. That streak ended this week. Thankfully, due to the clear guidance provided on the Hearings Office Hub and the outstanding support of Mr. Joe Berret, Assistant Administrative Hearings Officer, I was able to complete and submit the packet within 48 hours of the incident. Mr. Berret was instrumental throughout the process. He provided clear and concise instructions, answered my questions thoroughly, clarified expectations, and offered valuable professional advice on collecting and organizing the necessary documents. His patience, responsiveness, and expertise made a potentially stressful situation manageable. I am sincerely grateful for Mr. Berret’s assistance and commend his professionalism. Ki Hyun Park, Woodson IT
"I am writing to thank Mr. Ki Hyun Park for coming to Mount Vernon High School to help move several phones. When he came the first time the correct wrong form was filled out for the phones. He emailed me the right form to complete. He then came back to MV to follow-up with me to complete the task. We also did not have all the information we needed behind the scenes like the office numbers from which the phones were being pulled or the office numbers where they should be moved. He was so dedicated to assuring that he completed it correctly that he walked the building with me office by office to complete our large task of moving about 25-30 phones this year. While completing this task he smiled and was very nice. He answered all my questions and did not rush. He took his time with this task which was confusing for the both of us. It took him a few hours and worked through a time he could have taken a lunch break. I really appreciated his time and attention that he gave to Mount Vernon High School which helped us get off to a great school year."

Linda Myers, Fort Hunt ES
"Linda creates an environment that is inclusive and welcoming to all who enter her classroom. As an immersion teacher, she finds fun and engaging ways so that all of her students can access the material and understand its relevance. For example, with the complex grade 6 and grade 7 math standard of inequalities, Linda designed a lesson where students were able to see this math in a real-world context, and why knowing inequalities matters. Linda is a life-long learner and is committed to excellence. She enrolls in courses through the FCPS academy to continue her professional growth. Linda reflects on her teaching and finds creative ways to implement her learning into practice. During CT meetings, Linda attends with an open mind and is a thoughtful contributor to the team’s goals and needs. Candice Cetinkaya, Chrissy Brownson & Erika Thompson, Willow Oaks Admin Center
"Erika, Chrissy, and Candice provided an exceptional professional development session for our K-3 staff. They delivered a transformative experience that has already made a significant impact on our science curriculum and, more importantly, on our students. On an early release day, the Green Team delivered a powerful and practical training focused on integrating science and outdoor learning. Instead of theoretical concepts, they came prepared with specific, hands-on activities that our teachers could implement immediately. This approach resonated deeply with our entire staff, many of whom described it as the most beneficial professional development they have attended in a very long time. Erika, Chrissy, and Candice expertly created a supportive environment that encouraged our K-3 teachers to take risks and try new things with their students. Their guidance and enthusiasm have empowered our staff to think differently about science education and to embrace the rich learning opportunities that exist just outside the classroom door. Their dedication has not only inspired our educators but will also have an immediate and lasting impact on every K-3 student at Columbia. The Get 2 Green Team's work is a testament to the power of targeted, effective training and a model for professional growth within our school. We are incredibly grateful for their contribution to helping support our students."

"At West Springfield High School, we are fortunate to have dedicated professionals who consistently go above and beyond for our students. One such individual is Ms. Frisch, School Counselor, whose tireless commitment ensures that every student has the opportunity to be heard, supported, and recognized for their hard work. Recently, Ms. Frisch demonstrated the true spirit of advocacy while working with one of our transfer students. She took the lead in ensuring that the academic work the student had previously completed would be fully recognized within our district. This was not a simple process—it required persistence, detailed follow-up, and collaboration across multiple levels. Ms. Frisch worked directly with teachers at West Springfield High School and engaged with staff at the central office to make sure nothing was overlooked. Thanks to her persistence and unwavering determination, the student’s coursework was acknowledged, allowing them to continue their academic journey without losing the credit they had rightfully earned. This effort not only affirmed the student’s accomplishments but also sent a powerful message: every student matters, and every student has a voice. Ms. Frisch’s dedication exemplifies what it means to be an advocate. She stands beside her students, ensuring they are supported academically, socially, and personally. Her work reminds us that having a strong advocate can make all the difference in a student’s success. At West Springfield High School, we are proud to celebrate Ms. Frisch’s extraordinary efforts. She is not only a counselor but also a champion for equity, fairness, and opportunity—qualities that impact every student she serves."

Latrena Warthen, Mountain View HS
"My son, husband and I went to Mountain View to vote for the special election in September. We were greeted by volunteers and the bright ray of sunshine known as Ms. Latrena Warthen. When Ms. Warthen overheard my husband went to elementary school in the same building, she eagerly showed us around the school building. Along the way Ms. Warthen shared how students bring her joy by growing into young adults, using their voices to instill change in their education and eventually flying into adulthood. As the building supervisor, it is obvious Ms. Warthen takes pride in her work with an impressively well-maintained school. More evident is the love, joy and compassion Ms. Warthen has for all people with whom she interacts. Within five minutes of meeting our family Ms. Warther graciously provided us with an experience of awe and nostalgia that ended in friendly hugs. Michelle Sullivan, Mantua ES
"I wanted to share a recent encounter with Ms. Michelle Sullivan, the Get2Green lead & 5th grade AAP Teacher at Mantua ES. As a family, we attended my youngest son's Tball practice at Mantua ES, it was a Wednesday around 5:30/6:00pm, as my youngest was practicing, my older boys and I noticed a garden in the distance, so we decided to walk over there. As we explored and smelled the yummy herbs and vegetables, we were greeted by Ms. Sullivan, her warmth and enthusiasm for the garden was truly contagious, and it was clear how much she enjoyed sharing her knowledge with the kids. She engaged with my boys and explained to them what had been planted and encouraged us to take some herbs and even an eggplant. My middle son was beside himself with excitement, he came home and put the herbs in a cup of water and the next day we made eggplant fries. Thank you for creating such a welcoming and educational space for students. It's a gift to have a teacher who inspires a love for nature and learning in such a special way. My kids attend a different FCPS school but how lucky is the Mantua ES community for having such a kind, caring & warm teacher like Ms. Sullivan."

"Ms. Neforos wrote to us right before the school year began, to let us know that she would no longer be my daughter's counselor. My daughter struggles with change, and she took this extra step to make sure my daughter had a comfortable start to the new school year. Ms. Neforos was also my son's counselor, and she was fantastic as he navigated the college application process and made his choices. She is an excellent and caring counselor. Although she is no longer my daughter's counselor, we appreciate her greatly, knowing that she is a caring and trusted individual with whom my daughter can always connect at school."

Lisa Shields, Willow Oaks Admin Center
"Lisa Shields supports AVID by interviewing and scheduling our AVID tutors. She goes above and beyond to support each AVID teacher and the programs at their schools. Every year she is proactive in communicating about schedules and new hires with me. Asking my preferences and confirming that what she is scheduling fits with what I need as the AVID teacher. She responds to email quickly and effectively. She is kind, professional, and considerate. The level of detail and organization required in her job is high and she goes above what is needed. I am thankful to work with her."

"The dedicated FCPS staff members involved have demonstrated remarkable teamwork and dedication in supporting MAS students who lost their placements due to an unexpected school closure. They quickly identified a suitable location at Kilmer Center, assembled a team of ABA coaches and teachers, and developed and implemented lesson plans within just one week of the private school placement closure. As a parent of one of these students, I sincerely appreciate their efforts. They are delivering lessons and behavioral interventions while fostering positive relationships with their students through kindness and professionalism. I am proud to be both an FCPS employee and a parent, and this experience has deeply moved me. This collaboration exemplifies how, when individuals work together with a shared commitment to supporting children, the outcomes can be truly outstanding."

Its success is a direct result of Mark's dedication and talent. Mark's vision and creativity were instrumental in transforming a complex and sensitive topic into a presentation that is not only effective, but also genuinely understandable for the diverse audience that makes up our school transportation team. Anna Montain, West Springfield HS
"I would like to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the incredible work of Ms. Montain, school counselor at West Springfield High School. While her official title may be “counselor,” she is truly so much more than that—she is a steadfast caretaker, advocate, and champion for every student she serves. Ms. Montain never hesitates to go above and beyond. She consistently seeks out opportunities for her students to grow, to succeed, and to see themselves in new and brighter ways. Her commitment is evident in the way she always asks the second question, the thoughtful follow-up, the “what else can I do?” moment that ensures no detail is overlooked and no student is left behind. Her advocacy is powerful. In every decision, she positions herself as her students’ strongest supporter—whether guiding them academically, providing social-emotional support, or simply making sure they feel heard and valued. Her work is not just about solving problems in the moment, but about building confidence, resilience, and hope in young people who need it most. West Springfield High School is a stronger, more compassionate community because of Ms. Montain. Her dedication, empathy, and tireless efforts embody the very best of what it means to serve students. She is a model of professional excellence and human kindness, and we are deeply grateful for her presence and her impact."

Kerri Hutchins, Willow Oaks Admin Center
"Kerri Hutchins takes the phrase "above and beyond" to a level that is simply unmatched. I have collaborated with many, but the amount of time, patience, priority, care, organization, advocacy that she does for our students is astounding. She is someone I can always count on when there is a student emergency. She positively and consistently advocates for those in need. She figures out how to get furniture, clothing, food, transportation, shelter with lightning speed and accuracy. She is always respectful but unrelenting in pursuit of support. I value her as a sounding board, I treasure her opinion and judgment, and I'm in constant awe of how she does it all. I'm so grateful for her partnership with me but more so for the students at my school. She is the light at the end of a very dark tunnel. There is so much more I could say, but just thank you for supporting our Homeless Families, Unaccompanied Youth, Pregnant Teens, Students in Foster Care, and all the other things that come up in between."

All voices are heard, and compassion and understanding are shown to all, students and adults a lot. After 28 years in the county, I have never seen a team work as such a strong unit as I have witnessed this math department work for the past 3 weeks. Ingrid Garrett, Fort Hunt ES
"Ingrid has been an incredible force the past two years. She consistently comes to collaborative team meetings prepared and curious, always wanting what is best for her students' learning and engagement. Her enthusiasm for embracing new curriculum and teaching strategies is infectious and a true testament to her commitment to professional growth. She seamlessly integrates every subject area lesson into a student-relevant context, ensuring students understand the "why" of the learning. She is a wonderful colleague, always ready to engage and support her peers. Beyond her work these past two years, Ingrid has a remarkable backstory. She was one of a group of specialized teachers selected from their home countries to come to the United States and teach in Fairfax County Public Schools through the Participate Learning program. Ingrid originates from Barbados and taught for 30 years prior to coming to Fort Hunt Elementary School. Her cultural responsiveness in the classroom is a model for us all. She shares her experiences from Barbados, and creates a safe environment for students to share their own, which together creates a truly inclusive and culturally rich environment for her students. Her dedication also extends to building strong relationships with parents, which enhances the vibrancy of the entire Fort Hunt community. This approach, combined with her dedication, means that every single student in her class grows and makes progress. She never lets a student leave her classroom at a lower level than where they started. Her students don't just learn; they thrive under her care. For all these reasons, and so many more, Ingrid Garrett is an outstanding candidate for Fox of the Week."

Barbara Adams, Mount Eagle ES
"You can’t think of Mount Eagle without thinking of Barb Adams! She has been part of the Mount Eagle family for over 30 years. Barb is dependable, dedicated, and always put students and families first. She is kind, friendly, and approachable. Barb goes above and beyond to support both colleagues and students. She is also an amazing cook! Her potluck contributions are famous around here-if Barb makes if, you know you want to try it! But what truly makes her story so amazing is the connection her entire family shares with Mount Eagle. Her husband, Larry, once worked here and helped shape the community we know today. Her children, Parker and Madison, both attended Mount Eagle—and now, Madison continues the legacy by working alongside us! Their journey is a beautiful reflection of how Mount Eagle is more than just a school. We are so grateful for her continued commitment, her generous spirit, and all she brings to our school. Mount Eagle is stronger, warmer, and more connected because of her."
